Goldman Sachs has revised its projection for China’s 2024 economic growth, raising the country’s GDP forecast to 4.9%, signaling renewed confidence in Beijing’s economic recovery efforts. The investment bank’s upward revision stems from several factors, including stronger-than-expected data on industrial output and increased consumer spending, coupled with the effects of more targeted policy support. These adjustments suggest that Chinese authorities are focusing on stabilizing the economy through both fiscal measures and monetary easing.

China’s economic performance in 2023 faced significant hurdles, particularly due to sluggish consumer demand following the lifting of strict pandemic-related restrictions, and a property sector in turmoil. However, signs of stabilization have emerged, leading global financial institutions, including Goldman Sachs, to reassess their outlook on the world’s second-largest economy.

The Chinese government’s approach to managing the country’s growth has evolved, reflecting a shift from aggressive pandemic-era fiscal policies toward more measured economic interventions. Goldman Sachs noted that China’s leadership has implemented strategies aimed at striking a balance between economic stimulus and long-term sustainability. This shift has helped calm investor concerns about structural issues, particularly in real estate, while stimulating sectors such as manufacturing and technology.

The revised forecast aligns with other optimistic assessments, suggesting that China is poised to achieve moderate yet sustainable growth in 2024. Goldman Sachs’ economists highlighted that China’s renewed focus on infrastructure spending, along with a gradual recovery in the property market, are likely to support the nation’s GDP growth trajectory. Additionally, the bank predicts that consumer confidence will continue to rebound, boosted by government initiatives aimed at alleviating unemployment and expanding credit availability.

Analysts also emphasize the role of China’s exports, which have benefitted from the relative strength of global demand, particularly in sectors such as electronics and machinery. While geopolitical tensions, including trade relations with the U.S., remain a potential risk, the bank noted that China’s diverse manufacturing base and strategic partnerships with emerging markets will continue to bolster its economic resilience.

However, challenges persist, particularly within the property sector. Although authorities have taken steps to stabilize the real estate market, the sector remains fragile due to high levels of debt among property developers and continued concerns about housing affordability. Goldman Sachs pointed out that resolving these issues will be critical to maintaining the momentum of China’s broader economic recovery.

Engineers and architects are exploring an innovative solution to the world’s energy storage challenges through towering skyscrapers capable of holding vast amounts of power. These ambitious designs are being developed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), a global architecture and engineering firm, in collaboration with Energy Vault, a pioneering energy storage company. Together, they aim to integrate gravity-based energy storage systems into the design of skyscrapers, creating buildings that not only serve as urban landmarks but also contribute to renewable energy infrastructure.

SOM’s skyscrapers could reach heights up to 1,000 meters—nearly three times the height of London’s iconic Shard. The idea of combining energy storage with urban architecture marks a significant step forward in the push for sustainable development. This novel concept of using buildings as massive storage devices leverages gravity batteries, an emerging technology that promises to address the challenge of energy storage in an environmentally sustainable way.

Gravity batteries store energy by using the excess electricity generated from renewable sources like solar or wind to power a system that lifts heavy weights within the building. This energy is stored as gravitational potential energy, ready to be converted back into electricity when needed by lowering the weight. This technology is seen as an efficient and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional batteries, which rely on resource-intensive materials like lithium.

Bill Baker, an engineer at SOM and a leading figure in the development of the project, emphasized the potential of these skyscrapers to accelerate the carbon payback period of buildings, making them more environmentally sustainable over their lifespan. “These buildings could play a critical role in addressing two major challenges facing urban development: energy storage and carbon emissions,” Baker explained, noting that the inclusion of gravity-based energy storage systems can drastically reduce a building’s carbon footprint.

The partnership between SOM and Energy Vault was announced earlier this year, and the concept is gaining traction in both architectural and environmental circles. Energy Vault, known for its work in gravity energy storage, has already made waves in the energy sector with its innovative use of gravity to store renewable energy. By partnering with SOM, the firm is taking its vision to new heights—literally—by embedding its technology into urban architecture.

While the concept of gravity-based energy storage is still relatively new, it is viewed as a promising alternative to more conventional forms of energy storage like lithium-ion batteries. Unlike chemical-based batteries, gravity batteries have the advantage of being low-maintenance and long-lasting. They rely on basic physical principles, making them simpler to implement and scale. Moreover, they do not degrade over time like traditional batteries, which is a significant advantage in terms of long-term sustainability.

One of the most appealing aspects of this technology is its adaptability. Gravity batteries can be built into existing infrastructure, or in this case, integrated directly into new skyscraper designs. This means that cities can begin to incorporate energy storage solutions into their very fabric, rather than relying solely on grid-based energy storage systems that are often located outside urban areas. In dense, energy-hungry cities, this could provide a much-needed boost to renewable energy adoption by making energy storage more accessible.

SOM’s skyscraper designs are still in the prototype stage, but they have already sparked significant interest. The buildings are envisioned as both functional and visually striking, with the potential to become new symbols of sustainable urban development. At a time when cities around the world are grappling with how to reduce their carbon footprints and become more energy-efficient, these gravity-powered skyscrapers could provide a solution that meets both aesthetic and environmental needs.

However, challenges remain. The initial cost of constructing such skyscrapers, particularly with the integrated gravity battery system, is expected to be high. Developers will need to weigh the long-term environmental and economic benefits against the upfront financial investment. Nonetheless, proponents of the technology argue that the cost could be offset by the savings in energy and carbon emissions over the building’s lifespan.

Another issue is the scalability of the technology. While the concept works well in theory and small-scale trials, implementing it in skyscrapers across major cities will require extensive testing and refinement. Factors like building materials, weight distribution, and energy conversion efficiency need to be carefully considered. However, SOM and Energy Vault remain optimistic about the project’s future, pointing to the global shift towards renewable energy as a strong motivator for continued innovation.

The potential benefits extend beyond energy storage. These skyscrapers could also serve as models for a new generation of smart buildings that are self-sustaining and energy-efficient. By integrating renewable energy storage with modern architecture, cities could drastically reduce their dependence on fossil fuels, cutting emissions and promoting sustainable growth. This would not only improve the quality of life in urban areas but also set a global standard for sustainable development in the 21st century.

While the United Kingdom is one potential market for these towering energy storage solutions, other regions may be quicker to adopt the technology. Countries with large-scale urbanization projects and a strong focus on renewable energy, such as those in the Middle East or East Asia, could be more likely to invest in these energy-storing skyscrapers as they seek to diversify their energy portfolios and meet growing energy demands.

Never Too Old To Rock ‘n’ Roll

It’s cool realizing these guys have been playing together for 55+ years”

— Cre8ive Network

LAS VEGAS, NV, UNITED STATES, September 8, 2023/EINPresswire.com/ — These days we have plenty of great older Rockers to remind us that we’re never too old to Rock & Roll; Mick Jagger & Paul McCartney jump to mind. But sadly, there are also stark reminders that even those very young, or with youthful spirits, can leave us too soon; Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Jones & Cobain, all gone @ 27.

During an interview with The Phoenix, they spoke of a surreal feeling they had while recording their cover tribute to The Traveling Wilburys’ End of The Line, “realizing Roy, George & Tom were there.” The Phoenix knows, all too well, how fragile the life of a band and it’s members can be. They lost their original drummer (Jim), had a guitarist (Rich) forced to quit due to health issues and recently the spouse (Dolores) of their guitarist and sound engineer (Don) passed away, leaving a palpable void in what they now refer to as their Phoenix Phamily.

The guys just completed their 3rd CD of tribute cover recordings and decided to dedicate this one, CD3, to Dolores. She’s featured on the inside cover and the last 3 tunes were planned, recorded and dedicated to honor and memorialize her sweetly joyful spirit.

Listening to them talk about their recording process, it’s apparent they’ve been at this a long time and they clearly enjoy doing it together. The guys are mostly retired from professional careers as business executives, engineers and even a MD cardiologist. They live all over, Chicago, Phoenix, Las Vegas and BC Canada, and yet, they manage to stay close and current through regular Zoom sessions. The band is not a money making endeavor for them, indeed they told me it’s about constantly spending money and, more importantly, time doing what they love, making music together.

The fine print around the edge of their new CD3 disc says it well: “The Phoenix is a not-for-profit Rock & Roll Band established in Winona, Minnesota in 1968 and still recording their classic tribute performances for their own enjoyment and to share with Family, Friends & Fans…”

Btw, about the crazy graphic on the CD3 disc; it’s an AI generated image of a rock band consisting of actual mythical flaming Phoenix birds. Apparently the guy that did it (Jimi) likes it, Don tolerates it, Tom doesn’t care and Gene is embarrassed by “whatever it is.” “A healthy consensus & resolution process,” said Jimi, “that’s a key element to keeping such a group of humans together for so long.”

Having listened to all 3 of their CD’s and after watching their videos on their Facebook Fan Page and YouTube Channel, it’s fair to say these guys are good. Some of the tunes they’ve covered are very demanding, especially the Moody Blues orchestrated pieces that they’ve meticulously reproduced, always with a spin of their own. It’s impressive how they’ve been able to produce a recorded sound & feeling as though they were all in the studio together playing live. Their performances can be checked out on Facebook and YouTube.

From the beginning in 1968: Don (guitar), Gene (keys, guitar), Tom (bass), Rich (guitar) and Jim (drums), friends from Saint Mary’s College, in Winona, Minnesota, formed The Phoenix rock band in the Fall of 1967. These were booming years for (what we now call) Classic Rock and these guys were in the thick of it; playing covers of their favorite band’s hits for enthusiastic college crowds.

After graduation, as often happens, everyone went their separate ways across the US & Canada; embarking on their careers, getting married and starting families. Through it all, they kept playing with a string of other bands. As fate would have it, some of those bands were in Chicago where Don & Jimi (current drummer) met and played together for years.

2014: The unfortunate passing of The Phoenix original drummer, Jim Rauer, was a tragic catalyst bringing the guys back together and igniting the idea for a reunion. Don tracked Jimi down in Vegas and they set a date for a week long reunion filled with catching up and a whole lot of playing & recording.

Since then annual reunions followed in 2017, 2018 & 2019 (2020 was canceled. You know why). Each year the band recorded some of their old covers as well as some new work, including an original written by a friend from St. Mary’s, Ed Chabot.

In order to keep the music going between reunions, the guys developed a process for recording remotely. They Zoom for about an hour a couple times a month to discuss all the tunes in process and what they’re going to cover next. They strive for a holistic sound as though they were playing live together. It was a bit of a learning curve, but each contributor has equipment and ability to digitally record their performance then send tracks to the Master Mixer/Producer Extraordinaire – Don Brown who tirelessly works to keep things on track while building their mixes. Friends of The Phoenix have contributed their talents to their recordings as well – Ed Chabot, vocals and slide; Dan Nelson, vocals; Michael Sullivan, pedal steel; Richard Schoen, Jim Gilbert, Lisa Lombardy & Hunter Hopewell on vocals, to name a few. The guys always enjoy & appreciate having these talented performers on board.

To date The Phoenix has 60+ tunes in the can and 15+ music videos, which you can see on their Facebook Fan Page and YouTube Channel, with many more to come…

It’s cool realizing these guys have been playing together for 55+ years; they definitely have a strong brotherly bond centered around music which lifts their spirits and keeps them young at heart – Rock On!
