Scammers operating in the UAE have increasingly exploited WhatsApp’s business platform to impersonate trusted contacts, aiming to extract sensitive personal and financial information from unsuspecting users. This surge in fraudulent activity has prompted Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, to initiate a targeted public awareness campaign by directly messaging users in the UAE with detailed guidelines to distinguish legitimate business profiles from fake ones.

These deceptive practices often involve scammers creating profiles that mimic reputable companies or individuals, using official logos and business names to gain credibility. The impersonators then contact users, requesting confidential details such as passwords, banking information, or verification codes under various pretexts, including prize claims, urgent payments, or account verification. Such tactics prey on the trust that users place in familiar or official-seeming contacts, making it crucial to understand the warning signs of fraudulent profiles.

Meta’s communication emphasises several practical steps for users to verify the authenticity of business accounts on WhatsApp. Genuine business profiles typically feature a green checkmark badge, signifying that WhatsApp has verified the account’s authenticity. Additionally, the FAQ highlights that official business accounts often provide clear contact information, including physical addresses and email IDs, which can be cross-checked independently. Users are advised to be cautious of unsolicited messages from accounts lacking these markers, especially if they request personal or financial information.

The prevalence of such scams in the UAE reflects a broader global trend where digital fraudsters exploit popular communication platforms. The UAE’s rapidly expanding digital economy and high smartphone penetration have made it an attractive target for cybercriminals. Reports indicate that these scams have led to significant financial losses and identity theft cases, affecting both individuals and businesses. Authorities in the region have responded by increasing collaboration with technology firms and law enforcement agencies to identify, disrupt, and prosecute offenders.

Cybersecurity experts underscore the importance of user vigilance and education alongside technological safeguards. They advise that users should not share one-time passwords , verification codes, or bank details via messaging apps. Moreover, any unsolicited requests for payments or personal data should be treated with scepticism. Experts also recommend reporting suspicious profiles directly to WhatsApp and local cybercrime units to aid in swift action against scammers.

WhatsApp has implemented several backend security measures to combat such misuse, including automated detection of suspicious accounts and the ability for users to block and report fraudulent profiles easily. However, the dynamic nature of scams means that fraudsters continuously evolve their methods to bypass safeguards, making user awareness a critical line of defence.

The UAE government has been proactive in addressing cybercrime through legal and regulatory frameworks. The Federal Law No. 5 of 2012 on Combatting Cybercrimes stipulates stringent penalties for offences involving electronic fraud, impersonation, and data breaches. These laws are complemented by public education initiatives and partnerships with the private sector to enhance digital literacy and security awareness across the community.

Telecommunications providers in the UAE have also joined efforts to strengthen network security and raise awareness about phishing and social engineering attacks. Campaigns targeting both consumers and corporate clients aim to provide up-to-date information on the latest threats and prevention strategies. These initiatives are crucial as social messaging platforms like WhatsApp remain primary communication channels for many residents and businesses in the country.

Despite these efforts, challenges remain due to the anonymous and borderless nature of cybercrime. Fraudsters often operate from outside the UAE, complicating jurisdictional enforcement. International cooperation and intelligence-sharing between countries have become essential components of the global response to digital fraud schemes. UAE authorities participate actively in such cooperative frameworks, seeking to enhance their capacity to track and dismantle scam networks.

Users are increasingly urged to adopt best practices for online security, including enabling two-step verification on WhatsApp accounts, regularly updating app software, and avoiding clicking on suspicious links. Businesses are encouraged to educate their customers about official communication channels and verify any unusual requests through direct contact.

The surge in “vibe coding”—a term coined by AI researcher Andrej Karpathy to describe the practice of using AI to generate code based on natural language prompts—has introduced a new set of challenges for developers, particularly in debugging AI-generated applications. While this approach has democratized software development, allowing even non-programmers to create functional apps, it has also led to concerns about code quality, maintainability, and security. Abu Dhabi National Oil Company has entered into framework agreements valued at Dhs6 billion with 12 UAE-based manufacturers to produce critical industrial equipment locally. This initiative, part of the “Make it in the Emirates” programme, aims to enhance the resilience of the nation’s supply chain and create up to 1,300 skilled private-sector jobs.

The agreements focus on the domestic production of cables and pressure vessels, essential components in ADNOC’s operations. By localising the manufacturing of these items, ADNOC seeks to ensure timely availability, reduce dependency on international suppliers, and mitigate global supply chain disruptions.

The signing took place during the “Make it in the Emirates” forum in Abu Dhabi, attended by Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and ADNOC’s Managing Director and Group CEO. Dr Al Jaber emphasised the importance of strengthening local manufacturing capabilities to support the UAE’s industrial growth and economic diversification.

This move aligns with ADNOC’s broader strategy to stimulate domestic manufacturing. Previously, the company announced agreements with over 60 companies to locally produce critical non-oil products, aiming to manufacture AED70 billion worth of products in its procurement pipeline by 2027. These efforts are expected to create thousands of job opportunities and enhance the resilience of the local supply chain.

In addition to the current agreements, ADNOC has committed over AED20 billion for the procurement of structures and metal products from national companies. This commitment is part of a broader initiative to stimulate industrial growth and create more private-sector jobs for UAE nationals.

The “Make it in the Emirates” initiative, led by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, aims to position the UAE as a global hub for advanced industry and innovation. The programme encourages local manufacturing, supports the development of national talent, and promotes sustainable industrial practices.

ADNOC’s investment in local manufacturing is complemented by its focus on sustainability and technological innovation. The company has been leveraging artificial intelligence and advanced technologies to optimise operations and reduce emissions. Facilities like the Habshan 5 gas processing plant and Zirku Island offshore operations have been at the forefront of deploying such technologies, contributing to ADNOC’s goal of becoming a low-carbon energy leader.

ADNOC’s In-Country Value programme incentivises suppliers to adopt clean technologies and establish new manufacturing facilities in the UAE. Since its inception, the ICV programme has driven significant investment back into the UAE economy, supporting the nation’s Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative.

The “Make it in the Emirates” forum serves as a platform for collaboration between government entities, industry leaders, and investors. It showcases the UAE’s commitment to fostering a robust industrial sector, enhancing economic resilience, and achieving sustainable growth.

The United Arab Emirates has finalised a significant agreement with the United States to import advanced American-made artificial intelligence semiconductors, marking a pivotal step in Abu Dhabi’s ambition to become a global AI hub. The deal, announced during President Donald Trump’s Gulf tour, permits the UAE to import 500,000 Nvidia H100 chips annually, facilitating the development of large-scale data centres in the region.

This agreement coincides with the UAE’s broader commitment to invest $1.4 trillion in the U.S. over the next decade, focusing on sectors such as AI infrastructure, semiconductors, energy, and manufacturing. The investment framework includes partnerships with major U.S. companies like BlackRock, Microsoft, and Global Infrastructure Partners, aiming to mobilise up to $100 billion for next-generation data centres and energy infrastructure.

A key component of the deal is the construction of a 10-square-mile, 5-gigawatt data centre in Abu Dhabi, led by Emirati firm G42 and involving several U.S. tech companies. This facility is set to be the largest of its kind outside the United States, significantly enhancing the UAE’s data processing capabilities and supporting its AI initiatives.

The agreement also includes substantial U.S. investments in the UAE, with American energy companies expected to invest in upstream oil and gas and unconventional energy projects. Top U.S. firms such as ExxonMobil, Oxy, and EOG Resources are involved in these initiatives, reflecting a deepening of bilateral energy ties.

President Trump’s Gulf tour, which included visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, focused on securing financial commitments from wealthy energy producers to boost the U.S. economy and create jobs. The UAE’s pledge to increase its energy sector investments in the United States to $440 billion by 2035, up from the current $70 billion, underscores the success of this diplomatic effort.

The UAE’s strategic shift towards the U.S. in technology and energy sectors is seen as a move to decouple from Chinese influence, particularly in AI. Emirati officials have explicitly pursued this realignment to secure U.S. technology transfers, including advanced semiconductors like Nvidia’s H100 GPUs. This pivot follows U.S. pressure to remove Chinese equipment from critical infrastructure, exemplified by G42’s removal of Huawei technology from its data centres.

The $1.4 trillion investment framework also encompasses initiatives in critical minerals and industrial capacity. The UAE’s $1.2 billion mining partnership with Orion Resource Partners targets lithium, cobalt, and rare earth metals essential for AI hardware and renewable energy systems. Additionally, Emirates Global Aluminum plans to build the first new aluminum smelter in the U.S. in 35 years, aiming to nearly double the country’s domestic production.

Tokyo-based Metaplanet Inc. has overtaken El Salvador in Bitcoin reserves, now holding 6,796 BTC compared to the Central American nation’s 6,170 BTC. This milestone positions Metaplanet as Asia’s leading corporate Bitcoin holder and the first publicly listed Japanese firm to adopt Bitcoin as its primary treasury asset.

The company’s aggressive accumulation strategy, initiated in April 2024, has led to a staggering 5,250% surge in its stock price over the past year. This growth trajectory has been further bolstered by its inclusion in the MSCI Japan Index, effective February 28, 2025, enhancing its visibility among institutional investors.

Central to Metaplanet’s strategy is its ambitious “21 Million Plan,” aiming to acquire 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025 and 21,000 BTC by 2026. To finance this, the company has raised approximately ¥116 billion through the issuance of 21 million shares via moving strike warrants, marking the largest Bitcoin-focused capital raise in Asian equity market history.

CEO Simon Gerovich has emphasized Bitcoin’s role as a hedge against Japan’s economic challenges, including high debt levels and currency depreciation. He stated that the company’s pivot to a Bitcoin-centric strategy has transformed it from a “zombie” company into a market leader.

Metaplanet’s financial performance reflects this transformation, with a reported 309.82% Bitcoin yield in Q4 2024 and a market capitalization increase of 11,800% over the past year. The company’s shareholder base has expanded significantly, now exceeding 50,000 investors.

In addition to its financial endeavors, Metaplanet is promoting Bitcoin adoption through initiatives like the upcoming launch of “The Bitcoin Hotel” in Tokyo, set to open in Q3 2025. This establishment aims to serve as a hub for Bitcoin education and community engagement.

Metaplanet’s approach mirrors that of U.S.-based Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, which holds over 553,000 BTC. Both companies exemplify a growing trend of corporations integrating Bitcoin into their treasury strategies as a means of preserving value and driving growth.

Laos has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform itself into a central hub for gold trading and refining in Asia by 2030, spearheaded by the Lao Bullion Bank . This initiative aims to bolster the nation’s financial stability and elevate its standing in the global precious metals market.

At a strategic meeting held on 2 May, LBB’s Chief Executive Officer, Chanthone Sitthixay, detailed the bank’s vision to establish Laos as a leader in the precious metals sector. The plan encompasses the development of comprehensive gold trading platforms, refining capabilities, and secure storage solutions, aligning with international standards to attract both regional and global investors.

The Lao Bullion Bank, officially launched in December 2024, represents a significant step in the country’s economic strategy. The bank’s establishment is a collaborative effort between the Lao government and PTL Holding, with the government holding a 25% stake and PTL Holding owning the remaining 75%. This partnership underscores a commitment to enhancing the nation’s gold reserves and stabilising the local currency, the Kip.

Since its inception, LBB has introduced various services, including gold deposit accounts, loans backed by gold collateral, and gold vending machines. These offerings aim to integrate gold more deeply into the financial system, providing citizens with alternative investment options and contributing to economic resilience.

To strengthen its position in the regional market, LBB has entered into strategic partnerships with key industry players. In October 2024, the bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Singapore Bullion Market Association , focusing on knowledge exchange and regulatory collaboration to enhance Laos’s bullion market infrastructure. Additionally, a partnership with StoneX APAC was established to leverage technological expertise and develop new financial products tailored to the precious metals sector.

In March 2025, LBB further expanded its network by partnering with Samlane Jewelry, a prominent local gold retailer. This collaboration aims to standardise gold trading practices within the country and facilitate smoother transactions for investors and consumers. As part of this initiative, a promotional campaign was launched, offering incentives to customers who deposit gold with the bank, thereby encouraging public participation in the formal gold market.

The bank’s efforts are also directed towards refining unmined gold ores, transforming them into valuable assets that can contribute to the national budget and reserves. By doing so, Laos seeks to maximise the value derived from its natural resources, ensuring sustainable economic growth and financial independence.

LBB’s establishment and its subsequent initiatives reflect a broader governmental strategy to integrate Laos more fully into the global financial system. By positioning itself as a central player in the precious metals market, Laos aims to attract foreign investment, enhance its economic stability, and offer its citizens diversified financial services.

The United States Department of Justice has officially recommended that Google’s ad-tech platform be dismantled following claims of an illegal monopoly. The proposal aims to address antitrust concerns that have intensified in recent years, as Google’s dominance in the digital advertising space raises significant questions about competition and market fairness. The DOJ’s recommendation stems from an investigation into Google’s practices, particularly its control over key aspects of […]

Metaplanet Inc., a Tokyo-listed investment firm, has fortified its position in the cryptocurrency market by acquiring an additional 555 Bitcoins, valued at approximately $53.4 million. This purchase was financed through the issuance of zero-coupon bonds to EVO FUND, raising $25 million, which was entirely allocated to the Bitcoin acquisition at an average price of $96,134 per coin.

This strategic move elevates Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin holdings to 2,235 BTC, positioning the company as one of the top 15 publicly traded entities globally in terms of Bitcoin reserves. The firm has set an ambitious target to amass 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025, with a longer-term goal of reaching 21,000 BTC by 2026, aligning with Bitcoin’s capped supply of 21 million coins.

Metaplanet’s aggressive accumulation strategy mirrors the approach of U.S.-based Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, which has been a pioneer in corporate Bitcoin investment. Since adopting the Bitcoin Standard in April 2024, Metaplanet has experienced significant growth, with its market capitalization increasing by 7,000% and its shareholder base expanding to over 50,000.

The company’s financial performance has also seen a substantial boost, achieving a record-breaking 309.82% BTC yield in Q4 2024. Metaplanet measures its performance using BTC yield, focusing on the growth of Bitcoin per share rather than traditional fiat metrics. This approach underscores the company’s commitment to maximizing shareholder value in Bitcoin terms.

To fund its Bitcoin acquisitions, Metaplanet has employed innovative financial instruments, including the issuance of moving strike warrants and zero-coupon bonds. These tools have allowed the company to raise capital without incurring interest-bearing liabilities, thereby optimizing its capital structure and reducing financial risks.

Metaplanet’s CEO, Simon Gerovich, has emphasized the company’s mission to lead the Bitcoin renaissance in Japan and emerge as a global leader in Bitcoin treasury operations. The firm plans to utilize a mix of loans, equity, and convertible bonds to achieve its Bitcoin accumulation goals, reflecting a flexible and strategic approach to capital markets.

The company’s aggressive Bitcoin strategy has not gone unnoticed, with analysts projecting that Bitcoin could reach or surpass $200,000 by the end of 2025. Metaplanet’s bold moves are seen as a response to this bullish outlook, positioning the firm to capitalize on potential market gains.

Metaplanet’s stock performance has mirrored its Bitcoin strategy, with shares surging by over 4,000% in the past year. The company is set to be included in the MSCI Japan Index, a move expected to attract more investors and enhance its market presence.
