Ripple has formalised a partnership with UAE-based tokenisation platform Ctrl Alt to deliver institutional-grade digital asset custody services as part of a landmark initiative by the Dubai Land Department to digitise property ownership using blockchain infrastructure.

The agreement will enable Ctrl Alt to leverage Ripple’s custody solution to store and manage tokenised property title deeds on the XRP Ledger, as Dubai intensifies its push to integrate advanced digital frameworks into its real estate sector. The project marks a significant stride in DLD’s broader strategy to streamline property transactions and increase market transparency by replacing conventional title documentation with blockchain-native digital representations.

Ripple’s institutional custody platform, designed for banks and financial institutions, will play a central role in securing and scaling the digital assets underlying Dubai’s real estate tokenisation programme. Ripple’s solution will ensure regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and asset security as property titles are issued and exchanged through blockchain mechanisms.

The announcement positions Ripple as a key player in the UAE’s drive toward regulated digital asset ecosystems. The partnership also represents Ripple’s first custody deployment in the UAE, expanding its global digital asset custody network into the Middle East and further solidifying its presence across EMEA, Asia Pacific, and Latin America.

Ctrl Alt, which had disclosed its participation in the DLD project earlier, is building tokenisation infrastructure tailored for real-world assets such as real estate. The firm will integrate Ripple’s technology to facilitate the issuance, transfer, and management of tokenised property deeds while ensuring institutional-grade security standards.

The Real Estate Tokenisation Project aims to transform Dubai’s property registry system by offering a fully digital framework that eliminates physical documentation and manual recordkeeping. Through the initiative, the DLD intends to increase efficiency in property ownership transfers, reduce fraud risks, and create a foundation for smart contract-enabled real estate solutions. By leveraging the XRP Ledger’s speed and cost efficiency, the project also seeks to attract global investors and developers to participate in tokenised real estate offerings governed by transparent, immutable ledger protocols.

Ripple’s expansion into the UAE’s digital asset space follows its broader global strategy to deliver enterprise-grade blockchain tools tailored to financial infrastructure, a focus that has intensified as global regulators and institutions begin adopting tokenisation at scale. Ripple’s digital custody division — established through its acquisition of Metaco in 2023 — has emerged as a core offering, providing secure storage infrastructure for tokenised assets in both public and permissioned blockchain environments.

Metaco’s digital asset custody platform, which now underpins Ripple’s institutional offering, was originally designed to meet the requirements of global banks and has been adopted by several financial institutions in Europe and Asia. Its integration with Ripple’s payment and liquidity tools enables a seamless experience for enterprises managing digital asset portfolios alongside tokenisation and cross-border payment rails.

Ripple’s custodial framework offers support for a wide range of tokenised assets, including stablecoins, real-world assets, and CBDCs. It provides multi-tier security, granular permission controls, and compliance features needed for institutional applications. The company’s leadership has highlighted tokenisation as a core theme in the evolution of financial infrastructure, predicting that trillions of dollars worth of real-world assets will migrate to blockchain ecosystems in the coming decade.

Ctrl Alt’s involvement in the DLD-led project comes as Dubai cements its role as a global testbed for blockchain innovation, with a supportive regulatory regime, ambitious smart city initiatives, and a growing appetite for Web3 integration. The company has built its platform to allow regulators, issuers, and investors to interact within a compliant digital asset ecosystem. Its participation in the project is expected to open the door for additional applications of tokenisation beyond real estate, including commodities, equities, and infrastructure.

Dubai’s real estate market, historically characterised by high-value transactions and global investor interest, is seen as an ideal candidate for tokenisation. By converting ownership documents into digital tokens recorded on a blockchain, authorities aim to offer fractional ownership models, enhance liquidity, and enable secondary market trading. The shift could also reduce costs and settlement times, while allowing retail and institutional investors to access real estate markets with lower capital thresholds.

Ripple’s role in the project is expected to be pivotal in meeting security, governance, and compliance requirements for digital custody. The partnership strengthens Ripple’s position as a go-to infrastructure provider for tokenisation use cases and reflects its strategic intent to deepen engagement in jurisdictions with progressive digital asset frameworks.

Tokyo-listed Metaplanet has bolstered its treasury by buying 797 additional bitcoins, worth approximately $96 million, raising its total holdings to 16,352 BTC—valued near $2 billion—as Bitcoin surged past $120,000. The move mirrors the blueprint of US-based Strategy: leverage equity and debt issuance to accumulate crypto assets, which can then be used as collateral for broader expansion.

CEO Simon Gerovich reiterated that Metaplanet intends to use its growing Bitcoin reserves not for trading or liquidation, but to underpin financing for acquisitions in cash-generating sectors—particularly digital banking and financial services. The company plans to tap into traditional financing channels, including zero-interest bonds and preferred-share issuance, while steering clear of convertible debt. This purchase follows a series of substantial bond financings: earlier this month, Metaplanet issued 30 billion yen in zero‑coupon bonds to acquire an additional 1,005 BTC, bringing total holdings to around 13,350 BTC.

Industry analysts say Metaplanet now ranks as Asia’s largest and the world’s fifth-largest corporate Bitcoin holder, outranking companies such as Tesla, Coinbase, and Block Inc.. The firm has set ambitious targets: 100,000 BTC by end‑2026 and 210,000 BTC by end‑2027—accounting for nearly 1% of the global Bitcoin supply.

Boosted by these strategic shifts, the company’s market capitalisation surpassed ¥1 trillion, and its stock has climbed more than 345% this year. The pivot, originally a hotel chain, to a Bitcoin treasury vehicle began in 2024 and has drawn parallels to MicroStrategy’s transformation into a crypto-centric enterprise.

While bitcoin-backed financing is still in its infancy among mainstream banks, select institutions—such as Standard Chartered and OKX—have begun piloting crypto as collateral. Gerovich emphasised that once accumulation reaches “escape velocity,” Metaplanet’s holdings could be leveraged similarly to traditional assets to secure financing for acquisitions.

Sceptics voice concerns around volatility and the sustainability of the “bitcoin yield” model. Veteran short-seller Jim Chanos dismissed these valuations as “financial gibberish,” yet Gerovich welcomes critics, stating he invites them to short the stock if they are not convinced of the strategy.

Metaplanet is exploring acquisitions of digital banks and financial services companies that align with its strategy. The company is also aiming to strengthen its treasury infrastructure through asset-backed financing, including bond issuances, preferred equity deals and a planned $5 billion capital raise targeting expansion into its Florida subsidiary.

A once-weekly injection of Wegovy® has become available in Singapore, marking the latest step in managing obesity as a chronic disease. The product, from Novo Nordisk, is licensed for adults and those aged 12 and above who are obese or overweight with at least one weight‑related condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes or dyslipidemia.

The drug works by mimicking the gut hormone GLP‑1, promoting a sense of fullness and reducing food intake when combined with healthier diet and exercise regimes. Its introduction follows approval by the Health Sciences Authority on 28 February 2025 for use among adolescents with obesity—a first in the region.

Over 600,000 adult Singaporeans are classified as obese, a figure that underlines the public health urgency given the hundreds of comorbidities associated with obesity. The rollout of Wegovy® offers a medically guided therapy for a condition too often dismissed as a lifestyle issue.

Clinical experts argue obesity stems from complex biological factors, ranging from genetics to hormonal imbalances. Dr Abel Soh, chair of the Endocrine and Metabolic Society of Singapore, says, “Obesity is not simply the result of lifestyle choices—it is a medically recognised chronic disease influenced by a complex interplay of genetics, hormones and environment”.

Approval comes amid global strain on semaglutide supplies. Local clinics previously stocked Ozempic and Rybelsus and faced intermittent shortages, with expectant Wegovy® shipments deferred until 2026 according to some medical guides. Private clinics were unable to reference branded drugs until local stock arrived, due to regulatory restrictions.

Available through prescription in private settings, Wegovy® will be offered alongside diet and exercise interventions. The injectable is indicated for chronic use; ongoing physician oversight is advised. Regulatory approval includes a requirement to review treatment after 12 weeks in adolescents if BMI reduction falls below 5% on the full 2.4 mg dose.

Globally, Wegovy® was first authorised in the US in June 2021, followed by EU approval in early 2022. Earlier, in Singapore, semaglutide received approval under Ozempic’s label starting March 2023 for diabetic therapy.

The drug’s effectiveness has been supported by the STEP clinical programmes, showing average weight reductions of between 10–15% over periods of 68 to 104 weeks. Benefits extend beyond weight loss to metabolic health improvements, including lower blood pressure and decreased cholesterol.

Local uptake may mirror global patterns, where appetite suppression and metabolic regulation paired with lifestyle changes have delivered sustainable weight loss without surgery. However, supply challenges persist: healthcare providers warn that stocks may remain tight, with some expect delays or patient referrals under the Ozempic brand.

Novo Nordisk has also updated its savings programme for Wegovy®, making it more accessible to cash‑paying patients. The initiative aims to reduce financial barriers, although uptake and cost‑effectiveness will depend on real‑world pricing and insurance coverage.

OPEC+ plans to finalise a 2.2 million-barrel-per-day supply restoration by September and is deliberating halting further production increases from October onwards, delegates have indicated. Source participants say the cartel has scheduled a final monthly increment of approximately 550,000 bpd in September, completing the planned unwinding of cuts. Following that, discussions have begun around suspending additional increases—especially the roughly 1.66 million bpd tied to later phases of the rollback—potentially pausing as early […]

European Parliament approved the removal of the United Arab Emirates from its “high-risk third countries” list for money laundering and terrorist financing, a decision aligned with its earlier removal by the Financial Action Task Force in February 2024 and marking a pivotal regulatory victory. This shift reduces the compliance burden on trade and financial flows, enhancing Abu Dhabi’s ambitions to deepen ties with Brussels and attract global investors.

Parliament’s vote endorsed the European Commission’s update to the list, which also saw the UAE’s delisting alongside jurisdictions like Gibraltar, Barbados and Panama, while new entries such as Monaco and Kenya were added. The move followed intense technical dialogue between Emirati authorities and EU institutions, satisfying the bloc’s concerns with enhanced cooperation on financial intelligence sharing and asset recovery.

Mohamed bin Hadi Al Hussaini, the Minister of State for Financial Affairs, described the decision as a “strategic milestone” that underscores global recognition of the UAE’s robust framework. He emphasised that this represents a shift toward positioning the UAE as a transparent, resilient and globally trusted financial centre – a foundation for attracting sustained investment.

These reforms follow a sweeping crackdown on non-compliance, with over AED 339 million in fines levied by the Central Bank on exchange houses, banks and insurers. The fines were part of a wider national strategy enacted under Federal Decree‑Law 20/2018 and its amendments, stretching regulatory oversight to real estate, precious metals, auditing and digital asset sectors.

Hamid Saif Al Zaabi, Secretary‑General of the National Anti‑Money Laundering and Combating the Financing of Terrorism Committee, told WAM that the EU’s removal affirms successful system‑wide integration across public and private sectors. He described the outcome as the result of a sustained national strategy dating back to 2014, supported by Cabinet-approved action plans and ongoing capacity‑building initiatives.

Despite commendations for its progress, Transparency International cautioned that delisting should not be interpreted as full clearance. The organisation noted persistent challenges in real estate safeguards and oversight of politically exposed persons, calling for ongoing vigilance and structured dialogue.

Financial experts note that removal from the EU’s list could yield significant economic dividends. The International Monetary Fund estimates capital inflows may surge by as much as 7.6 per cent of GDP, with foreign direct investment potentially rising by around 3 per cent. Gulf region analysts view delisting as unlocking smoother trade with Europe across sectors such as renewable energy, fintech and digital infrastructure.

Diplomatic messaging framed the delisting as a mutual strategic victory. UAE Minister Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh called it “independent recognition” of Abu Dhabi’s dedication to high international standards. EU Ambassador to the UAE Lucie Berger described it as deepening trust and advancing a shared commitment to economic safeguard and global security. Simultaneously, EU trade officials suggested that the move removes political and regulatory barriers ahead of ongoing free trade agreement negotiations with the UAE.

While the FATF had cleared the UAE in early 2024, the EU’s delayed action mirrored its own rigorous oversight cycle. In March 2023, the EU flagged the UAE for strategic deficiencies before launching a renewed process that incorporated enhanced inter-agency cooperation and legal reform.

Next on the UAE’s reform agenda is ensuring resilience in emerging risk domains such as cryptocurrency laundering and cross-border terror financing. Analysts emphasise that maintaining international trust will require sustained enforcement, legislative updates scheduled for later this year and deeper public–private collaboration.

Spanish café operator Vanadi Coffee has approved a plan to allocate up to €1 billion of its treasury into Bitcoin, marking a striking pivot from its core hospitality business into crypto‑asset accumulation. The decision, ratified by shareholders on 29 June, seeks to position the firm—currently loss‑making and operating just six outlets—as one of Spain’s largest Bitcoin holders.

Vanadi already owns 54 BTC, acquired at an average price of around €93,444 per coin, valued today at approximately €5.8 million. Its share price surged over 25 per cent following the announcement, a staggering boost for a business that reported €3.3 million in losses during 2024. Market observers note the stock has rallied more than 400 per cent year‑to‑date on hopes that crypto‑oriented balance sheets can act as alternative stores of value.

The strategic shift draws inspiration from established Bitcoin treasury pioneers such as MicroStrategy, which holds nearly 500,000 BTC and has leveraged convertible equity vehicles to fund its crypto purchases. Likewise, Japanese firm Metaplanet is acquiring Bitcoin aggressively as part of its acquisition-backed model. Vanadi’s leadership believes this approach can appeal to institutional investors seeking inflation hedges without disrupting conventional asset portfolios.

Analysts warn the company faces elevated risk. Vanadi operates at a negative equity of around €600,000, and auditors have flagged uncertainty over its going‑concern status. Critics argue a small café chain with slender margins and negligible exposure to financial markets may lack the sophistication to withstand Bitcoin’s volatility and regulatory scrutiny.

Financing the Bitcoin ramp‑up will involve issuing convertible bonds and equity, leveraging commitments from niche funders including Patblasc Software Consulting and Alpha Blue Ocean’s Global Tech Opportunities 10. Some question both the provenance and capacity of these investors, given their prior backing of distressed asset plays such as Intercity and Substrate AI.

Vanadi acknowledges the gamble may redefine its identity: “We aim to become the largest listed Bitcoin‑holding company in Spain,” it said, equating its structural transformation to precedent‑setting players in the sector. Nonetheless, it has had to scale back expansion ambitions, cutting its growth pipeline amid constrained resources and shifting priorities.

Vanadi’s strategy forms part of a broader wave of crypto treasury activity. A growing number of under‑the‑radar firms in Europe—from chipmakers to fintech startups—are joining major players in the US and Asia investing heavily in Bitcoin. Collectively, these firms moved over 10,000 BTC onto their books in late June, totalling several billion dollars in accumulated digital assets.

Experts suggest this trend follows Gartner’s classic hype‑cycle pattern: as Bitcoin becomes easier to acquire and gain public approval, doubt gives way to widespread optimism—driving speculative surges across new sectors. Vanadi’s move, while surprising due to its modest scale, fits squarely within this wave of enthusiasm.

London‑listed Strategy recently launched a $21 billion preferred stock offering to fund more Bitcoin purchases, underscoring how corporate balance sheets are being reconfigured around digital assets. Vanadi hopes to replicate this formula, albeit with far fewer resources and heightened risk exposure.

Vanadi’s management calls the transition a “long‑term bet on a decentralised financial model,” arguing that crypto reserves provide institutional credibility and operational transparency under existing market regulations. Yet, whether this approach offers sustainable upside or represents a peak‑hype miscalculation remains under intense debate among analysts and investors.
