At the third edition of the Saudi International Handicrafts Week, held at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University in Riyadh, veteran craftsperson Wu Jianmei rose to the spotlight as exhibitors and visitors gathered to experience global artistry. Wu Jianmei took a seat in the bright red-themed China pavilion, her fingers deftly guiding a needle in a demonstration of Xiang embroidery — a traditional art form that has earned her acclaim over a career spanning more than four decades. Her calm poise and meticulous stitching drew a steady stream of visitors who paused to watch each slender thread breathe life into the fabric.

Organised by Heritage Commission, Banan has brought together over 400 artisans representing more than 40 countries for 2025. China holds the title of Guest of Honour, a symbolic showcase of its cultural heritage in a pavilion designed to present more than a thousand handmade pieces alongside live craft demonstrations. The pavilion features lacquerware, fan-making, batik techniques and complex embroidery — each presented by skilled heritage bearers chosen to represent China’s rich craft traditions.

China’s role this year coincides with the 35th anniversary of formal diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia, as well as the designation of 2025 as the Year of Handicrafts in the Kingdom. Officials accompanying the Chinese delegation underscored the ambition to promote cross-cultural understanding and elevate artisanal craftsmanship within a broader creative economy. Among those present was the Chinese ambassador, who visited the China pavilion and praised the global scope of the event and the Kingdom’s support for heritage-driven cultural exchange.

Visitors to Banan were drawn not only to the China pavilion but to a wider tapestry of worldwide craftsmanship. Traditional techniques from Syria, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Oman, Bahrain and Jordan featured prominently, alongside booths from European, African, Asian, and Middle Eastern artisans. Demonstrations ranged across wood carving, clay pottery, metalwork, weaving and shadow-puppet craft.

A special interactive zone called “Banan Story” offered families and children an opportunity to engage hands-on with materials and tools under guided supervision, helping younger attendees connect playfully with global craft techniques. This initiative reflects a broader strategy by the Heritage Commission to foster intergenerational appreciation of handcrafts, encouraging younger audiences to explore cultural diversity through creativity.

For many, Wu Jianmei’s presence at Banan served as a powerful cultural bridge. Her Xiang embroidery pieces — delicate and intricate — symbolised a living history: patterns and stitches that carried stories of generations. Locals and expatriates alike watched in quiet admiration as the needle moved, building intricate motifs destined for display or sale. Her work has previously been exhibited in major institutions, a testament to her stature in the heritage-arts community.

A major step in electric-vehicle battery technology has been reached as GAC Group announced the completion of China’s first large-capacity all-solid-state battery production line capable of manufacturing vehicle-grade cells of 60 ampere-hours or more. According to company statements, the new line has achieved an areal capacity of 7.7 mAh/cm², compared with under 5 mAh/cm² for many conventional lithium-ion cells, signalling a potential leap in energy storage performance.

GAC’s research director, Qi Hongzhong, said that the energy density of the new solid-state cells is nearly double that of traditional liquid-electrolyte batteries and that vehicles currently capable of about 500 km range could stretch beyond 1000 km once the technology is integrated. The production line is presently in small-batch testing; vehicle integration trials are planned for 2026, with full mass-production targeted between 2027 and 2030.

This development places GAC among the first manufacturers globally to deploy large-format all-solid-state technology, an area in which automakers and battery firms in Japan, Korea and the United States have long been striving. Analysts observe that scaling solid-state technology from lab cells to industrial manufacturing has been a major bottleneck, primarily due to challenges around thick-electrode fabrication, solid-electrolyte interface stability, and cost. GAC’s ability to hit the 7.7 mAh/cm² threshold suggests the company has resolved at least one of the key obstacles.

The solid-electrolyte used in the new cells reportedly allows higher thermal thresholds—tolerating 300-400 °C compared to about 200 °C for conventional cells—and the battery manufacturing process incorporates a “dry” anode method that combines slurry mixing, coating and rolling into a single step. These process innovations are claimed to reduce energy consumption during manufacture and increase yield.

Alongside GAC’s progress, Dongfeng Motor Corporation is advancing its own all-solid-state agenda, targeting mass production of a 350 Wh/kg solid-state battery in September 2026, which it says will enable electric vehicles to achieve a range in excess of 1,000 km. Dongfeng already operates a 0.2 GWh pilot line and is working on variants of 400 Wh/kg and 500 Wh/kg solid-state batteries. The firm states that its 350 Wh/kg battery retains over 72% of its capacity at –30 °C and passed a 170 °C thermal safety test, surpassing current national standards.

Together these announcements reinforce the increasing pace of commercialization in the solid-state battery sector. Manufacturers hope such cells will deliver significant advantages over conventional lithium-ion chemistry: higher energy density, faster charging, better cold-weather performance and improved safety due to the absence of flammable liquid electrolytes. In GAC’s case, the large-cell format means fewer cells are needed per pack, potentially reducing packaging complexity, cost and weight.

However, experts caution that substantial hurdles remain before widespread adoption. Solid-electrolyte materials and manufacturing infrastructure are still costly, and long-term durability in automotive conditions – repeated charge/discharge cycles, thermal stress and mechanical vibration – must be validated. Further, supply-chain constraints for key materials such as solid-electrolyte precursors, special anode/cathode materials and high-purity manufacturing equipment continue to pose risks. GAC and Dongfeng both emphasise the need for ecosystem readiness, including new cell formats, pack integration and vehicle platforms designed for solid-state cells.

The strategic dimension of this move is significant: as China consolidates its leadership in electric vehicles and battery manufacturing, gaining industrial-scale capabilities in solid-state technology could confer a competitive edge. The reported 7.7 mAh/cm² areal capacity and 60 Ah cell format indicate that GAC is not simply experimenting in the lab but making strides towards production-level readiness. Whether the transition to full-scale mass manufacture meets the timetable will be closely watched by global automakers and battery suppliers alike.

Ukraine’s drone-manufacturer SkyFall unveiled its latest unmanned aerial system, the P1-SUN interceptor, on the opening day of the Dubai Airshow. The P1-SUN marks the company’s first public display outside Ukraine and is designed specifically to neutralise enemy drones such as the Iranian-designed Shahed, a frequent threat in the conflict with Russia. A company representative said production runs into the thousands of units per month.

SkyFall has built a reputation with systems such as the Shrike FPV strike drone and the Vampire rotary-wing model, both widely used by Ukraine’s armed forces. The P1-SUN uses a modular architecture and a 3D-printed airframe, enabling rapid manufacturing and deployment. According to the representative, the ‘plug-and-play’ design allows for quick reconfiguration to meet evolving threats.

The broader context of this launch lies in Ukraine’s intensified efforts to counter drone swarms and asymmetric aerial threats. Ukrainian defence-sector officials estimate that Russian forces have been deploying Shahed-type loitering munitions in high numbers across multiple fronts. Earlier assessments placed the cost of Ukrainian-built interceptor drones at as low as US $300 to US $500 per unit, compared with US $35,000 for some adversary systems. SkyFall’s move thus signals a shift from purely offensive drone designs to dedicated counter-drone capabilities.

At the airshow, SkyFall’s exhibit drew attention from international defence-industry attendees. One senior visitor commented that modular interceptors like the P1-SUN could fill a gap between point-defence systems and networked air-defence layers. Ukraine’s defence-industry consortium has been actively seeking partnerships with foreign firms, and meetings held on the sidelines of the show reportedly included discussions with major aerospace and defence contractors.

While SkyFall did not disclose customers or specific contracts at the event, analysts believe that the demo aims to position Ukraine as a supplier of cost-effective UAV and counter-UAV systems. The company’s advertising emphasises “combat-proven” status in the Ukrainian conflict, enhancing its export appeal. Kiev-based industry sources note that local firms are now transitioning from ad-hoc war-time manufacturing to serial production with export-orientation in mind.

However, challenges remain. Experts caution that scaling production of complex interceptor drones demands robust supply chains, quality assurance and integration into broader air-defence networks. SkyFall’s claim of thousands-per-month output will likely be tested by logistical realities such as 3D-printing capacity, component sourcing in a war-economy and export-licensing hurdles. Additionally, while cost-effective interceptors are attractive, they must be supported by detection and command-and-control systems—which are more costly and slower to deploy.

On the defensive front, Ukraine is not relying solely on lightweight interceptors. Systems such as the Rheinmetall Skyranger 35, a self-propelled anti-aircraft gun system mounted on a Leopard 1 tank chassis, are being delivered to bolster protection across multiple fronts. The combination of high-end systems and low-cost interceptors indicates a layered approach is under development.

Michael Saylor, the prominent Bitcoin advocate and co-founder of MicroStrategy, has made another significant move in his aggressive Bitcoin acquisition strategy. His company, which has been steadily amassing the cryptocurrency for years, has purchased 8,178 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $835 million. This new purchase further strengthens MicroStrategy’s position as one of the largest corporate holders of Bitcoin globally, a move that aligns with Saylor’s vision of Bitcoin as a store of value and a hedge against inflation.

The acquisition comes amid a backdrop of fluctuating Bitcoin prices, with the cryptocurrency demonstrating resilience despite market volatility. Bitcoin, which had experienced a substantial dip earlier in the year, has since shown signs of recovery. The latest move by MicroStrategy reinforces the long-term bullish outlook that Saylor has consistently expressed. For Saylor, Bitcoin represents more than just a speculative investment; it’s a cornerstone of his financial strategy. The acquisition is part of a broader trend in which institutional investors are increasingly viewing Bitcoin not merely as a speculative asset but as a vital element in their portfolios.

MicroStrategy’s ongoing purchases have led to the company’s Bitcoin holdings reaching well over 100,000 Bitcoin, which is valued at billions of dollars at current prices. This vast accumulation is not just a financial decision for Saylor but also a public statement about his belief in the future of Bitcoin. The company’s strategy has come under scrutiny at times, with critics questioning the wisdom of holding such a significant portion of corporate assets in a volatile cryptocurrency. However, Saylor has remained steadfast in his commitment, arguing that the potential upside of Bitcoin outweighs any risks associated with short-term market fluctuations.

Saylor’s position as one of the most vocal supporters of Bitcoin is well-established, and his company’s strategy of acquiring Bitcoin has become a benchmark for other institutional investors looking to follow suit. MicroStrategy’s aggressive buying strategy began in 2020, and since then, Saylor has made headlines for his unabashed enthusiasm towards the digital currency. For him, Bitcoin offers a unique opportunity to protect wealth from inflationary pressures that are exacerbated by traditional fiat currency policies.

Bitcoin’s journey over the past few years has been marked by significant institutional interest, with companies like Tesla and Square also making notable investments in the cryptocurrency. These moves have highlighted Bitcoin’s potential not just as a speculative asset but as an alternative form of money, challenging traditional financial paradigms. However, the path has not been without its challenges. Bitcoin has faced scrutiny from governments and regulators, particularly in terms of its environmental impact due to the energy-intensive mining process. This has sparked debates about the sustainability of the cryptocurrency in the long run.

Despite these concerns, Bitcoin’s role as a store of value continues to gain traction, especially among corporate players who see the cryptocurrency as a hedge against the potential devaluation of fiat currencies. The continued accumulation by MicroStrategy, with Saylor at the helm, underscores a broader trend of institutional adoption. MicroStrategy’s large Bitcoin holdings have made it a major player in the crypto space, and its moves are closely watched by analysts and investors alike.

Saylor’s strategy of leveraging Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset has prompted discussions about the broader implications for corporate balance sheets. His bet on Bitcoin is a departure from conventional corporate finance practices, where cash and other liquid assets are typically held as reserves. Instead, Saylor has opted for a strategy that involves converting the company’s cash reserves into Bitcoin, believing that the cryptocurrency will outperform traditional assets over time.
