Google has expanded Chrome’s native lazy-loading system to cover audio and video elements, extending a browser feature once centred on images and iframes into richer media formats that often consume far more data and trigger earlier connections to outside servers. The change allows developers to use the loading=”lazy” attribute on ` and so that files outside the visible viewport can be deferred until a user is closer […]

A malware campaign targeting organisations in South Korea is using weaponised Windows shortcut files and GitHub’s infrastructure to slip past standard network defences, according to threat researchers who say the operation relies on native Windows tools, hidden scripts and trusted web traffic to keep a low profile. Technical analysis published over the past few days shows the attackers embedding or decoding malicious PowerShell from LNK files, then […]

The […]

Google DeepMind has warned that autonomous AI agents face a widening security risk from malicious web content designed not for humans, but for machines that browse, interpret and act online. The threat, described by researchers as “AI Agent Traps”, centres on adversarial web pages and digital resources crafted to mislead, hijack or exploit AI systems as they move beyond chatbot functions into tasks such as handling email, […]

Scientists in Poland have built an ultrathin optical structure that traps infrared light inside a layer about 40 nanometres thick, a result that pushes light confinement far below the scale long regarded as practical for conventional photonic components. The work, led by researchers at the University of Warsaw with partners at Łódź University of Technology, Warsaw University of Technology and the Polish Academy of Sciences, uses patterned […]

Gold prices extended their retreat as investors recalibrated expectations for US interest rates after stronger labour-market signals collided with a worsening conflict in the Middle East, a combination that lifted the dollar, pushed oil higher and revived concerns that inflation could stay stubborn for longer. Spot bullion has come under pressure even as geopolitical risk remains elevated, an unusual pattern that reflects how sharply energy costs and […]

Justin Bieber’s headline-grabbing purchase of a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT for about $1.3 million in January 2022 has become one of the clearest symbols of how sharply the NFT market has deflated, with comparable pricing for the collection now hovering around $11,000 to $12,000. The singer bought Bored Ape #3001 for 500 ether at a time when digital collectibles were commanding extraordinary sums, fuelled by celebrity […]

Google has disclosed a coordinated takedown of UNC2814, a suspected China-linked cyber-espionage group, after investigators tied it to intrusions at 53 organisations in 42 countries, with telecommunications providers and government bodies forming the core of the victim set. The campaign centred on a custom backdoor called GRIDTIDE, which used Google Sheets as a covert command-and-control channel, allowing malicious traffic to blend with ordinary cloud activity rather than […]

Anthropic’s acquisition of Seattle startup Vercept, little more than a year after the company emerged from stealth, has become one of the clearest signs yet that the contest for elite artificial intelligence talent is reshaping the sector as quickly as the technology itself. The deal folds Vercept’s team and technology into Anthropic’s push to make Claude better at “computer use”, the industry term for AI systems that […]

Solana’s effort to prepare for a future quantum-computing threat is exposing a basic tension for high-speed blockchains: the safer the signature system becomes, the heavier and slower it is likely to be. That trade-off has moved into sharper focus as Bitcoin developers debate draft quantum-safe address proposals, Ethereum’s post-quantum team lays out a multi-year migration plan, and new research from Google and outside experts brings forward the […]

Greenlogue/AP Parched hillsides and a sharply weaker winter rain pattern are putting Darjeeling tea under fresh strain, with planters warning that the famed first flush harvest is again under pressure and that the flavour profile underpinning the tea’s global prestige is becoming harder to preserve. Rainfall deficits across eastern and north-eastern parts of the country were severe through early February, and Darjeeling itself was reported to have […]

Tata Steel has been served with a demand notice of ₹17.55 billion by the District Mining Office in Ramgarh, Jharkhand, over alleged excess coal extraction at its West Bokaro Colliery, adding another legal challenge to the steelmaker’s long-running mining disputes in eastern India. The company said it received the notice on April 3, a day after the end of the financial year, and would contest it through judicial or quasi-judicial forums.

In its stock exchange disclosure dated April 4, Tata Steel said the notice, dated March 30, alleges extraction of about 162.4 million tonnes of mineral coal beyond permissible limits during the period from FY2000-01 to FY2006-07. The company said the demand had been framed on grounds similar to those examined by the Supreme Court in the Common Cause versus Union of India litigation, a landmark case that hardened official scrutiny of mining done beyond environmental or statutory limits.

The scale and vintage of the claim are striking. By reaching back more than two decades, the notice underscores how historical mining records, clearances and production caps remain exposed to reinterpretation by regulators long after the ore or coal has been extracted. For Tata Steel, which has spent years simplifying its structure and strengthening its balance sheet while managing volatile steel demand, the notice also revives a regulatory risk investors know well: mining-linked liabilities that can surface suddenly and run into hundreds or thousands of crores.

Tata Steel has taken a firm line in response. In its filing, management said the claim “lacks justification and substantive basis” and indicated it would pursue legal remedies. That wording suggests the company does not see the notice as an immediately payable liability, but as a disputed demand that will have to be tested through litigation or administrative review. Bloomberg, citing the company statement, reported the amount at about $189 million.

The case fits into a wider pattern. Tata Steel’s annual reports already describe other significant Jharkhand mining disputes, including older claims tied to alleged unlawful iron ore extraction after the expiry of lease renewals. In those disclosures, the company said a demand of ₹3,568.31 crore had been challenged before the Jharkhand High Court, while another ₹421.83 crore notice had also been disputed and partly paid under protest after transit permits were halted. Tata Steel said in that filing that it believed it was remote the state’s demand would ultimately survive.

That history matters because it shows the latest notice is not an isolated compliance issue but part of a broader tension between mining companies and state authorities over how production limits, lease terms and environmental permissions should be interpreted. The Common Cause rulings sharpened the legal and financial consequences of excess extraction, especially where production outstripped environmental clearance or statutory approvals. Courts and regulators have since shown a greater willingness to revisit older conduct and calculate compensation on a far more punitive basis than companies had anticipated years ago.

For Jharkhand, one of the country’s key mining belts, such claims carry a dual message. They show the state remains determined to pursue compensation linked to alleged over-extraction, while also signalling to miners that legacy operations are not beyond review. For the industry, the episode is another reminder that captive mines, often central to cost control for steelmakers, bring legal and policy exposure alongside raw material security. The business logic of owning mineral assets remains strong, but it comes with increasingly intense compliance scrutiny.

The timing is also notable. Tata Steel has faced other mining-related claims over the past year, including a demand from Odisha in July 2025 linked to mineral dispatch issues at the Sukinda Chromite Block. While the factual basis of that case differs from the West Bokaro matter, the accumulation of notices across jurisdictions suggests large resource companies remain under close watch from state mining departments even as policymakers push for higher domestic output of minerals and metals.

Wall Street’s rush to treat hyperscalers as the safest way to profit from artificial intelligence is running into a harder question: whether all that spending will generate returns fast enough to justify the cost. Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet and Meta are pushing capital expenditure to extraordinary levels as they race to build data centres, secure chips and expand cloud capacity, but investors are facing a business model that […]

Robinhood chief executive Vlad Tenev has sharpened his argument for a radical overhaul of market structure, saying the practice of shutting exchanges at the end of each trading day is a “legacy design choice” and that tokenisation could help create a financial system that works more like the internet. U. S. Treasuries fell across the curve after President Donald Trump used a televised address to harden his stance on Iran, unsettling investors who had been looking for signs of de-escalation and instead got a warning of heavier military action that sent oil prices sharply higher and revived fears of another inflation pulse through the global economy. The move in government debt reflected a quick reassessment of […]

Arabian Post Staff -Dubai Oil prices leapt on Thursday after President Donald Trump said the United States would keep striking Iran for at least the next two to three weeks, dashing hopes that Washington was preparing to scale back military action and easing concerns in energy markets only briefly. Brent crude rose above $108 a barrel and West Texas Intermediate climbed past $106 in early trade, reversing […]

Copper and other industrial metals fell on Wednesday after US President Donald Trump renewed threats to strike Iran’s power plants and other civilian infrastructure if talks fail to halt a war that has entered its second month, adding another layer of risk to commodity markets already strained by conflict in the Gulf. Arabian Post Staff -Dubai   Silver tumbled on Thursday, extending a volatile run in precious metals as higher oil prices, firmer Treasury yields and a stronger dollar pulled investors out of bullion. Spot silver was reported down about 4.6% on the day, while market data showed the metal trading near $72.31 an ounce and futures dipping to an intraday low around $70.35, leaving the market pressing against […]

Arabian Post Staff -Dubai Gold fell sharply on Thursday, but the viral claim that bullion had crashed below $4,600 and lost more than $1 trillion in market value in a single day appears to overstate what can be firmly confirmed from broad market data. By late trading, spot gold was quoted at $4,664.39 an ounce and US gold futures at $4,691.10, after a strong rebound a day […]
