Ravencoin is confronting the prospect of a deep blockchain reorganisation that could reverse several days of transactions after a critical software vulnerability allowed invalid blocks to enter its ledger. Two of the network’s largest mining pools, 2Miners and RavenMiner, are building an alternative chain from block 4,487,775, the last block before the first known invalid block appeared on August 7. Together, the pools control a majority of […]

Pokémon trading cards are evolving from childhood collectibles into a multibillion-dollar alternative asset market, prompting blockchain companies to build digital trading systems around physical cards stored securely in vaults. The technology can speed up transactions, but attracting enough buyers and sellers remains the larger challenge. Estimates put the wider trading-card market at roughly $10 billion to $15 billion, while the value of graded cards alone has been […]

The United States has imposed sanctions on cryptocurrency platform Shelbit, its founder Siavash Kayvanpour and affiliated companies after investigators linked the network to billions of dollars in digital-asset flows involving Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other sanctioned entities. The action by the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control places Shelbit and associated entities on Washington’s sanctions list, effectively freezing assets under US jurisdiction and exposing […]

It gives the digital-asset trading and technology company an operating base […]

MARA Holdings sold about 23,093 bitcoin for $1.6 billion during the first half of 2026, marking a major reversal from the cryptocurrency miner’s earlier strategy of accumulating and retaining virtually all the bitcoin it produced. The figure, disclosed in the company’s quarterly regulatory filing, represents cumulative sales during the six months ended June 30 rather than a single transaction carried out on Monday. Social-media posts describing the […]

A Windows Hello for Business authentication technique can allow malware operating inside an unlocked Windows session to gain access to Microsoft Entra ID services without obtaining the user’s password, PIN or biometric data. Security researcher Dirk-jan Mollema demonstrated that an attacker who already controls a user process can invoke the cryptographic key underpinning Windows Hello for Business, or WHFB, and use it to generate authentication signatures. The […]

Wintermute has secured US broker-dealer registration, opening the door for the digital-asset market maker to trade equities and equity options and take a bigger role in exchange-traded products as the boundaries between crypto and conventional securities markets narrow. The expansion is being carried out through Wintermute USA LLC, its New York-based affiliate, which is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission and is a member of the […]

Coinbase has opened US stock trading to customers in the UK, accelerating its push beyond cryptocurrencies as the exchange seeks to become a broader financial platform spanning digital assets, equities, savings and borrowing. The service began rolling out progressively to eligible UK users on August 6, giving customers access to nearly 4,000 US stocks through the same Coinbase application used for crypto and fiat holdings. A Bitcoin wallet untouched since 2011 has moved 50 BTC worth about $3.2 million to a new address with transaction links to FalconX, reviving scrutiny of cryptocurrency holdings dating from the network’s earliest years. The 50 BTC remained in the receiving address on Friday, providing no direct evidence that the coins had been deposited with FalconX or sold. However, the destination wallet has previously transferred Bitcoin to […]

Tether is expanding its asset-tokenisation business into Saudi Arabia, beginning with institutional real estate as the stablecoin group deepens its move into blockchain-based financial infrastructure beyond its core USDT franchise. The company’s Hadron platform will provide the technology needed to issue and manage tokenised property assets for institutional investors. Riyadh-based First Data will serve as issuer and market operator, while fintech company BKN301 will connect the system […]

Hyperliquid-linked exchange-traded funds have lost their early momentum, with inflows slowing sharply in July and early August as competition intensifies across cryptocurrency derivatives and prediction markets. JPMorgan analysts said the pullback follows unusually strong demand in May and June, when Hyperliquid ETFs led non-bitcoin cryptocurrency funds in inflows relative to assets under management. The reversal has raised questions about whether the fast-growing decentralised trading platform can maintain […]

Sandisk and Western Digital shares have slumped despite stronger-than-expected quarterly results, showing that investors are demanding ever more from companies whose valuations have soared on the artificial intelligence boom. The sell-off has also revived speculation that some speculative capital could be shifting towards cryptocurrency, although evidence of a sustained rotation into bitcoin remains limited. Sandisk fell more than 13% during Thursday trading, while Western Digital dropped about […]

Bitcoin miners are facing an intensifying profitability crisis as the average cost of producing one coin approaches $78,000, leaving about one-fifth of the global mining fleet operating at a loss. Bitcoin was trading near $64,500 on Thursday, roughly 17% below the estimated industry-wide production cost. The gap has persisted for several months, forcing operators to shut down older machines, sell cryptocurrency reserves and redirect capital towards artificial […]

Aave founder Stani Kulechov has opposed a proposed change to Ethereum’s monetary policy, warning that cutting validator rewards as staking expands could weaken decentralised finance, deter investors and undermine ether’s appeal as a productive asset. The disputed plan, initially circulated as EIP-8361 and subsequently renumbered EIP-8363, would introduce a “tapered issuance burn”. It would destroy an increasing share of the newly issued ether allocated to validators as […]

A volunteer security group has flagged 85 potentially critical vulnerabilities across hundreds of Bitcoin-related software projects, exposing the scale of weaknesses that artificial intelligence can identify faster than developers can verify or repair them. The Bitcoin Red Team recorded 4,962 security findings after running advanced AI models against 390 open-source repositories during an intensive audit spanning about 27.5 hours on August 4 and 5. The findings included […]

Tether’s gold-backed digital asset XAU₮ has received Shariah compliance certification, widening its potential use among Islamic banks, institutional investors and individuals seeking digitally accessible exposure to physical bullion. The certification was issued by Amanah Advisors, an Islamic finance consultancy led by scholar Mufti Faraz Adam. It found that the token’s structure complies with core Islamic finance principles, including real ownership of an underlying asset, transparent backing and […]

A self-propagating malware campaign has compromised more than 430 npm packages, exposing software projects linked to dependencies that collectively record about two billion installations each month. The campaign, known as ChainDrop, emerged on 4 August after attackers gained control of the account behind Keyv, a widely used caching library in the JavaScript ecosystem. Malicious code was then introduced into Keyv and several related packages, including flat-cache, file-entry-cache […]

SK Hynix shares briefly plunged by the daily limit in pre-market trading on Thursday, marking the chipmaker’s second near-30% flash crash on Nextrade within about ten days and intensifying scrutiny of thin liquidity on South Korea’s alternative stock exchange.

Eleven shares changed hands at 1.168 million won each at 8 am Seoul time on August 6, about 30% below the previous Korea Exchange closing price. The stock quickly recovered most of the loss and ended Nextrade’s 50-minute pre-market session down roughly 2%, indicating that the extreme opening price was not driven by a change in the company’s business outlook.

The episode echoed a July 28 disruption when a single SK Hynix share traded at 1.272 million won, nearly 30% below the preceding close. That transaction triggered a volatility interruption on Nextrade and transmitted the distorted price into cryptocurrency derivatives linked to the chipmaker.

A perpetual futures contract tracking SK Hynix fell about 19% during the first event. Almost $60 million of leveraged long positions were liquidated within minutes, leaving more than 900 traders with estimated realised losses of $17.4 million. The platform operating the contract later offered to compensate eligible customers and said it would reassess the way external prices were incorporated into its valuation mechanism.

Thursday’s plunge again occurred at the start of Nextrade’s pre-market window, when order books are typically shallower than during the main session. The exchange allows stocks to move as much as 30% above or below the previous Korea Exchange closing price, meaning a small order can reach the limit when few competing bids are available.

The trade underscored the distinction between a price that is technically valid and one that accurately reflects the market’s consensus. Electronic systems can treat an executed transaction as authoritative even when only a handful of shares are involved. Prices may then spread through data feeds, trading algorithms, structured products and blockchain-based markets before human dealers can assess whether the move is credible.

Nextrade launched in March 2025 as the first serious challenger to the Korea Exchange’s long-standing dominance. It attracted investors with lower fees and trading hours stretching from 8 am to 8 pm, compared with the shorter core session on the main exchange. Retail traders account for most activity on the platform, which has at times handled a substantial share of the country’s equity turnover.

Its expanded trading day has improved access and competition, but the two SK Hynix incidents highlight risks when extended hours are combined with fragmented liquidity. Order books can be especially vulnerable at the opening instant, when market makers have not fully populated bids and offers and overseas price signals may still be feeding into domestic systems.

Regulators and exchange operators now face pressure to consider safeguards based on trade size, available depth and deviation from a volume-weighted reference price. Measures could include auction-style openings, minimum order-value requirements, stronger market-maker obligations or delayed dissemination of extreme prices produced by very small transactions.

The disruption comes during an unusually volatile period for SK Hynix and South Korean technology shares. The chipmaker has been at the centre of investor enthusiasm over high-bandwidth memory used in artificial-intelligence accelerators, but its shares have also recorded repeated double-digit moves as traders reassess valuations and future demand.

SK Hynix reported a sharp year-on-year increase in quarterly profit, supported by high-bandwidth memory sales, yet the results fell short of elevated market expectations. The disappointment contributed to a broad sell-off that erased trillions of dollars from South Korean equities at its peak and pushed measures of expected volatility to exceptional levels.

Leveraged exchange-traded funds linked to SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics have amplified those movements. Authorities have halted new sales of some single-stock leveraged products and proposed tighter investment limits, larger minimum deposits and higher transaction costs after retail investors suffered heavy losses.

Research into the market turbulence has also raised concerns that predictable rebalancing by leveraged funds can encourage traders to buy or sell ahead of compulsory end-of-day transactions. Such feedback loops may magnify price changes even when there is little new information about a company’s operations.

Gold prices surged above $4,200 an ounce on Wednesday as weaker US employment data, a softer dollar and falling Treasury yields drove investors towards the precious metal, although claims that bullion gained 4.5% during the day appeared to overstate the move recorded by leading benchmarks. Spot gold climbed more than 3% to about $4,200 an ounce, its highest level since late June. US gold futures advanced roughly […]

Chainlink’s LINK token is being withdrawn from centralised cryptocurrency exchanges at its fastest pace in more than a month, signalling that a growing number of holders may be moving assets into private wallets rather than preparing to sell them. About 1.26 million LINK left known exchange addresses during the 24 hours to August 4, the largest daily net outflow since June 29. The transfer was worth roughly […]

Bitcoin’s largest holders have accumulated 19,610 coins since July 29, widening a sharp divide with smaller investors who reduced their exposure after a major security failure involving Coldcard hardware wallets. Wallets holding between 10 and 10,000 Bitcoin increased their combined balances by 0.14 per cent over the period. Addresses containing less than 0.01 Bitcoin cut their holdings by 0.55 per cent, indicating that retail investors were more […]
