The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates has achieved a significant milestone with its 500 dirham banknote being recognised as the ‘Best New Banknote Issue’ for 2025 in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region. This accolade was announced during the High Security Printing EMEA conference held in Basel, Switzerland, earlier this month.

The award-winning banknote, which entered circulation on 30 November 2023, is part of CBUAE’s third polymer series. It reflects the UAE’s commitment to sustainability and innovation in the financial sector. The note’s design incorporates advanced security features and three-dimensional elements, setting new standards in banknote aesthetics and security.

One of the standout features of the 500 dirham note is its use of the region’s largest surface-applied foil stripe, a pioneering move in Middle Eastern currency design. This security enhancement not only deters counterfeiting but also adds a distinctive visual appeal. The note was printed by Oumolat Security Printing, a fully owned subsidiary of CBUAE, underscoring the nation’s capability in high-security printing technologies.

The front of the banknote showcases the Terra Sustainability Pavilion from Expo City Dubai, symbolising the UAE’s dedication to a sustainable future inspired by the principles of the nation’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The reverse side features the Museum of the Future in Dubai, an architectural marvel that bridges the past and future, along with iconic landmarks such as the Emirates Towers and the Burj Khalifa. Notably, the Burj Khalifa, standing at 828 meters with over 160 floors, is highlighted as a beacon of sustainability, deriving a significant portion of its energy from solar power.

In a strategic move towards environmental responsibility, CBUAE opted for polymer material in the production of the new banknotes. Polymer notes are more durable and have a longer lifespan than traditional paper notes, and they are fully recyclable, significantly reducing environmental impact. This initiative aligns with the UAE’s broader vision to transition to a green economy and ensure sustainable development for future generations.

This recognition follows a previous accolade where CBUAE’s 1,000 dirham banknote was awarded ‘Best New Banknote’ in 2023. The consistent acknowledgment of the UAE’s currency innovations highlights the nation’s leadership in adopting cutting-edge security features and sustainable practices in banknote production.

His Excellency Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, Assistant Governor of Banking Operations & Support Services at CBUAE and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Oumolat Security Printing Company, expressed pride in this achievement. He emphasised that the award is a testament to the UAE’s dedication to sustainability and innovation, positioning the nation at the forefront of advanced security features and environmentally friendly materials in currency production.

The High Security Printing EMEA conference is a prestigious event that recognises excellence in the design and technical development of banknotes, passports, and identity cards across the EMEA region. The UAE’s accomplishment at this conference not only enhances the global reputation of its currency but also reflects the country’s broader commitment to innovation and sustainability in various sectors.

President Donald Trump is actively promoting U.S. liquefied natural gas exports to Asian nations, aiming to strengthen economic ties and reduce their dependence on Middle Eastern and Russian energy sources. This move aims to balance trade and address criticisms from Trump regarding trade imbalances and the semiconductor industry’s dynamics. Wu emphasized Taiwan’s transparency in international business and expressed interest in future Alaskan LNG productions due to their quality and logistical advantages.

Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, shared insights into a recent intense conversation with President Trump concerning his renewed interest in acquiring Greenland. This discussion has added complexity to U.S.-Denmark relations, especially in the context of global security challenges posed by nations like Russia, Iran, and North Korea. Frederiksen underscored the necessity for Europe to bolster its defense investments and the importance of U.S.-Europe cooperation in addressing these global threats.

Cheniere Energy, a leading U.S. LNG exporter, plans to expand its capacity under the current administration. CEO Jack Fusco announced intentions to pursue new regulatory permits, aligning with Trump’s agenda to boost the U.S. energy sector. Prointek, a prominent player in the interactive technology and unified communication sectors, has officially opened its latest manufacturing facility in Greater Noida, marking a significant step towards bolstering India’s self-reliance in high-tech production. This new facility, strategically located in the National Capital Region, is expected to not only increase the company’s production capacity but also enhance its contribution to the rapidly expanding sector.

The 250,000-square-foot plant, which has been in development for several months, will focus on the production of a variety of interactive displays and unified communication solutions. The facility is a response to the growing demand for high-quality tech products that support modern communication systems, particularly as businesses and educational institutions continue to embrace digital transformation.

Prointek’s expansion aligns with the government’s ongoing push for “Atmanirbhar Bharat” , which encourages domestic manufacturing and aims to reduce dependency on foreign imports. By investing in local production capabilities, Prointek seeks to not only cater to the local market but also expand its presence globally, making the plant a crucial element in the company’s long-term strategy.

The company’s expansion is poised to have a significant impact on the regional economy as well. The facility is expected to create numerous job opportunities, both in the manufacturing sector and in associated roles such as research and development, logistics, and sales. Local suppliers of materials and components are also likely to benefit from the enhanced production activity, fostering growth in ancillary industries.

Prointek’s decision to build the facility in Greater Noida reflects the area’s attractiveness for tech-focused investments. The region has become a hub for IT and electronics manufacturing, with proximity to Delhi and well-established infrastructure facilitating easier access to global markets. The presence of skilled labour and a supportive business environment has also made Greater Noida an ideal location for such expansions.

Tesla Inc. has made a significant move towards entering the Indian market, as evidenced by a surge in job openings across key locations like Mumbai and Delhi. The company is currently seeking to fill 13 roles, spanning customer-facing and back-end positions, marking a clear commitment to establishing a foothold in India’s growing electric vehicle sector.

The announcement comes after Elon Musk’s high-profile meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a discussion that appears to have catalysed Tesla’s decision to pursue expansion in the region. The timing of this strategic move is especially relevant given the recent developments in India’s trade policies, with the government reducing import duties on luxury cars, a measure that could provide Tesla with a more favourable environment for operations.

India’s electric vehicle market, while still in its infancy compared to China’s, is poised for considerable growth. The country’s rapid urbanisation, increased government focus on sustainability, and rising interest in eco-friendly transportation solutions position it as a key player in the global EV landscape. Tesla, with its reputation for high-performance, premium EVs, stands to benefit from these trends.

Tesla’s recruitment efforts are seen as an indication of the company’s intention to tap into the vast potential of India’s automotive sector. The roles available span various areas, including technical support and operations, aimed at building the company’s infrastructure in the region. This is not the first time Tesla has shown interest in India; however, the recent policy changes have provided a more favourable environment for international companies looking to expand their operations.

Prime Minister Modi’s engagement with Elon Musk is likely to have been a pivotal factor in advancing Tesla’s plans for India. During the meeting, both parties discussed ways to enhance cooperation, particularly in sectors such as renewable energy and electric vehicles. Tesla’s entry into India aligns with the government’s push to reduce carbon emissions and transition towards sustainable energy solutions.

The reduction in import duties on luxury vehicles is a significant policy shift that could greatly benefit Tesla’s plans. Previously, India imposed high import duties on foreign-made vehicles, making it challenging for companies like Tesla to price their products competitively in the local market. The recent reduction, part of a broader effort to stimulate the EV sector, is seen as a move to attract global automakers. Tesla, which manufactures its vehicles primarily in the United States, is expected to benefit from these lower tariffs, potentially making its vehicles more affordable for Indian consumers.

India’s EV market, while smaller than China’s, is growing at a rapid pace. The country’s government has set ambitious targets for electric vehicle adoption, with a focus on reducing air pollution and decreasing dependence on imported oil. The Indian government has also introduced several incentives to promote the sale and manufacturing of electric vehicles, including subsidies for EV buyers and manufacturers, as well as tax exemptions for charging infrastructure.

Despite these encouraging trends, Tesla will face stiff competition in the Indian market. Homegrown automakers, such as Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, have already established themselves as key players in the EV sector, offering affordable electric cars that cater to Indian consumers’ needs. Additionally, the infrastructure for electric vehicles in India remains underdeveloped in many regions, with limited charging stations and a lack of widespread awareness among consumers about EV technology.

Nevertheless, Tesla’s brand recognition and technological expertise are expected to give it an edge in the Indian market. The company’s high-performance vehicles, coupled with its focus on sustainable energy solutions, could appeal to India’s growing middle and upper classes, who are increasingly concerned with environmental issues. Additionally, Tesla’s potential to create local manufacturing jobs and contribute to India’s green energy goals may help the company secure government support.

Tesla’s entry into India also signals the increasing importance of emerging markets in the global automotive industry. As more companies look to expand beyond their traditional markets in North America and Europe, countries like India and China are becoming central to the automotive industry’s future growth. India, with its large population, growing middle class, and rising environmental awareness, presents a significant opportunity for Tesla to expand its global footprint.

The RTA’s initiative is expected to not only improve the experience for daily commuters but also attract more tourists to the waterway, which has long been a popular attraction in Dubai. The new abras, with their modern features and enhanced comfort, will likely offer an even more appealing way to explore the historic district of Bur Dubai, Deira, and other key areas along the Creek.

The traditional abras have been a feature of Dubai’s public transport network for decades, offering a scenic and affordable way to navigate the city’s waterways. However, the evolving needs of residents and visitors, alongside the city’s rapid growth, have necessitated changes to the system. The RTA’s decision to upgrade the abras aims to address these needs while ensuring the city’s water transport continues to serve as both a practical mode of transport and a cultural symbol.

RTA’s modernisation efforts are also seen as part of a broader trend across Dubai, where a mix of traditional values and modern technological advancements is shaping the city’s transport landscape. From driverless taxis to electric buses and sustainable metro services, the RTA has been at the forefront of integrating innovation into the city’s public transport network.

The new abras are also expected to be more inclusive, with design modifications that make the boats more accessible to people with disabilities. The RTA has stated that it is committed to ensuring all its public transport services meet the needs of the entire population, including those with mobility challenges. The new abras will have specially designed seating and ramps to accommodate passengers with physical disabilities, further enhancing the inclusivity of Dubai’s transport system.

As the global transportation industry increasingly turns towards sustainability, the RTA’s new abras demonstrate how cities like Dubai are seeking to preserve their cultural heritage while embracing new technologies. The launch of these boats highlights the emirate’s commitment to becoming a leader in sustainable urban development and reflects the growing importance of integrating green solutions into public transport systems worldwide.

Passengers on the new abras will also benefit from enhanced security features, with additional surveillance cameras and safety protocols in place. These measures are expected to ensure that Dubai’s water transport remains one of the safest and most reliable in the region, with a focus on passenger welfare at every stage of the journey.
