PumpFun, a memecoin creation platform on the Solana blockchain, has amassed $294 million in fees so far this year, surpassing Ethereum’s $249 million. This marks the ninth consecutive week that PumpFun has outpaced Ethereum in weekly fee capture, highlighting a significant shift in blockchain revenue dynamics.

The platform’s rapid ascent is attributed to a surge in memecoin trading activity, which has been bolstered by user-friendly features and celebrity endorsements. PumpFun enables users to launch tradeable tokens for under $2 with a single click, a feature that has resonated with a broad user base seeking quick and affordable entry into the cryptocurrency market.

High-profile figures such as Caitlyn Jenner, Iggy Azalea, and Rich The Kid have utilized PumpFun to launch their own memecoins, drawing substantial attention to the platform. This celebrity involvement has not only increased user engagement but also contributed to the platform’s impressive revenue performance.

In contrast, Ethereum has experienced a significant reduction in transaction fees, primarily due to network upgrades aimed at improving scalability and reducing costs. The Dencun upgrade, implemented in March 2024, introduced enhancements that led to a 95% drop in average gas fees. Subsequent updates, including the Pectra and Fusaka upgrades, have further increased the network’s capacity and efficiency.

Despite these improvements, Ethereum’s fee revenue has declined, with daily fees falling below the $1 million mark for the first time since September 2024. This reduction in fees, while beneficial for users, has impacted the network’s overall revenue generation.

Kyrgyzstan is set to launch a gold-backed stablecoin, the Gold Dollar , in the third quarter of 2025. The initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of Finance, aims to integrate blockchain technology into the national financial system, offering a transparent and stable digital asset backed by $500 million in gold reserves. Plans are underway to increase this backing to $2 billion within two years.

Unlike central bank digital currencies , USDKG operates within a privately managed smart contract ecosystem, ensuring security and transparency without central bank control. The stablecoin is pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar and will initially launch on the Ethereum blockchain, with intentions to expand to other chains as adoption grows.

USDKG is designed to facilitate cross-border payments, a significant feature for Kyrgyzstan, where remittances account for approximately 30% of the country’s GDP. The stablecoin enables instant, low-cost international transactions, making it easier for workers abroad to send money home.

Transparency is a cornerstone of USDKG’s design. Each token is verifiably tied to physical gold stored in secure, audited vaults. A publicly accessible proof-of-reserves system will be available, allowing real-time verification of gold reserves and stablecoin issuance on the blockchain.

The Kyrgyz government has also proposed legislation to establish licensed crypto banks, aiming to provide regulated banking services related to digital assets and cryptocurrencies. This move is intended to legalize and regulate the cryptocurrency market, increase trust in crypto assets, and mitigate risks of fraud and unauthorized access to funds.

In addition to USDKG, the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic plans to launch a digital national currency, the digital som, by the end of 2026. The digital som will coexist with traditional cash and non-cash currencies, facilitating cashless transactions and improving control over budget spending.

The disclosure was made by one of World Liberty’s co-founders on Thursday, shedding light on the growing involvement of the Trump family in the cryptocurrency sector. World Liberty, […]

A coordinated operation by Terengganu police and Tenaga Nasional Berhad has dismantled an illicit bitcoin mining syndicate accused of stealing electricity to power its operations in Hulu Terengganu and Marang districts. The joint raid, codenamed Op Letrik, led to the seizure of 45 mining machines valued at RM225,000. The syndicate allegedly bypassed electricity meters to siphon off power directly from the grid, enabling them to run energy-intensive […]

Bitcoin Solaris, a next-generation blockchain platform, is gaining attention for its claim of being 99% more energy-efficient than Bitcoin, addressing long-standing environmental concerns associated with cryptocurrency mining.

Traditional Bitcoin mining relies on a Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism, which requires miners to solve complex mathematical problems, consuming vast amounts of electricity. Estimates suggest that the Bitcoin network’s annual energy consumption rivals that of some small countries, contributing significantly to global carbon emissions.

In contrast, Bitcoin Solaris utilizes a Proof-of-Stake system, where validators are chosen based on the number of coins they hold and are willing to “stake” as collateral. This method drastically reduces the computational power required, leading to substantial energy savings.

The environmental benefits of PoS systems like Bitcoin Solaris are further enhanced when combined with renewable energy sources. For instance, integrating solar power into mining operations not only reduces carbon footprints but also offers economic advantages. Studies have shown that solar-powered mining farms can save significant amounts of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to removing thousands of cars from the road.

The adoption of energy-efficient mining practices is not limited to Bitcoin Solaris. Other blockchain platforms, such as Solana, have also embraced PoS mechanisms, resulting in markedly lower energy consumption per transaction compared to Bitcoin. Solana’s innovative Proof-of-History mechanism further enhances its efficiency, making it an attractive option for environmentally conscious investors and developers.

The shift towards greener blockchain technologies is also influencing the broader energy sector. Cryptocurrency mining operations are increasingly being integrated with renewable energy projects, providing a consistent demand for clean energy and supporting the financial viability of such initiatives. In some cases, excess energy from renewable sources, which would otherwise go unused, is being redirected to power mining activities, optimizing resource utilization.

Innovative approaches are being explored to further reduce the environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining. Researchers are investigating the use of integrated photonics and other advanced technologies to develop more energy-efficient mining hardware. These advancements aim to shift the focus from energy-intensive computations to more sustainable solutions.

A North Korean operative’s attempt to infiltrate Kraken, a prominent cryptocurrency exchange, through a deceptive job interview has been successfully thwarted, highlighting the increasing sophistication of state-sponsored cyber-espionage tactics targeting the digital asset industry.

The incident involved an individual posing as a qualified IT professional, leveraging fabricated credentials and a falsified identity to secure a remote position within Kraken. The operative’s strategy included the use of advanced social engineering techniques, such as deepfake technology and AI-generated documentation, to bypass standard hiring protocols. However, Kraken’s vigilant recruitment team identified inconsistencies during the interview process, leading to the exposure of the applicant’s true affiliation.

This event underscores a broader pattern of North Korean cyber operations aimed at the cryptocurrency sector. The Lazarus Group, a hacking collective linked to North Korea’s Reconnaissance General Bureau, has been implicated in numerous cyberattacks resulting in substantial financial losses. Notably, the group orchestrated a $37 million theft from CoinsPaid in July 2023 by deceiving an employee into downloading malware under the guise of a job-related task.

The United Nations has reported that North Korea employs over 4,000 IT workers globally, generating approximately $600 million annually to fund its nuclear weapons program. These operatives often assume false identities and secure positions in tech firms, exploiting the remote work culture to mask their true origins.

In the United Kingdom, authorities have urged companies to conduct in-person or video interviews to mitigate the risk of hiring imposters. A recent analysis revealed that a single North Korean agent operated under 12 different personas across Europe and the U.S., infiltrating sensitive sectors including defense and government.

The FBI has also issued warnings about North Korean schemes involving fake job offers and investment opportunities designed to trick individuals into downloading malware. These social engineering attacks are characterized by their complexity and the use of sophisticated technical acumen to compromise even well-versed cybersecurity professionals.

Cybersecurity experts emphasize the need for rigorous hiring practices, including thorough background checks and identity verification, to counteract these threats. Companies are advised to be wary of applicants who avoid video interviews, request payment through unconventional means, or exhibit inconsistencies in their professional histories.

Bitcoin has climbed above $90,000, recovering from a sharp decline that followed the November 2024 U.S. presidential election. This rebound has reignited discussions about its potential role as a safe-haven asset, especially as it outperforms gold in the current market environment.

After reaching a low of approximately $74,500 in early April, Bitcoin’s price has surged nearly 25%, erasing a significant portion of its earlier losses. This upward trajectory is attributed to a combination of factors, including renewed investor interest and shifting macroeconomic conditions.

Analysts point to the increasing appeal of Bitcoin as a hedge against traditional financial instruments. Geoff Kendrick, head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, forecasts Bitcoin reaching $120,000 in the second quarter of 2025. He cites economic uncertainties, such as rising tariffs and questions over Federal Reserve policies, as catalysts driving investors toward Bitcoin over traditional assets like U.S. Treasurys.

The cryptocurrency’s performance has also been bolstered by institutional interest. Upcoming SEC 13F filings are anticipated to reveal increased Bitcoin holdings by pension and sovereign wealth funds. Additionally, the approval of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds earlier this year has facilitated greater mainstream adoption, contributing to its price appreciation.

Comparatively, gold has experienced a more modest performance. While it reached a record high of over $3,500 per ounce in April, its gains have been overshadowed by Bitcoin’s rapid ascent. The Bitcoin-to-gold price ratio, a metric used to compare the value of the two assets, hit a record-breaking 40 in December 2024, reflecting Bitcoin’s growing dominance in the alternative asset space.

Despite these developments, some experts urge caution. Mark Hackett from Nationwide Financial emphasizes that it’s premature to classify Bitcoin as a safe-haven asset due to its historical volatility. He notes that while Bitcoin’s recent performance is promising, it must demonstrate sustained stability and low correlation with traditional risk assets to be considered a reliable store of value.

The broader market context also plays a role in Bitcoin’s resurgence. President Trump’s economic policies, including delayed tariffs, have influenced investor behavior, prompting a reevaluation of asset allocations. As traditional markets grapple with these policy shifts, alternative assets like Bitcoin are gaining traction among investors seeking diversification.

Goldman Sachs is intensifying its commitment to digital assets, with plans to expand crypto lending operations and accelerate efforts in asset tokenization. Mathew McDermott, the bank’s global head of digital assets, has outlined a strategic roadmap that positions the firm at the forefront of blockchain integration within traditional finance.

The bank is preparing to spin off its digital asset platform, GS DAP®, into an independent entity within the next 12 to 18 months. This move aims to foster a more collaborative and decentralized ecosystem, enabling broader participation from industry stakeholders. McDermott emphasized that such a structure would better serve the goal of creating a truly decentralized platform.

Goldman Sachs’ investment in the digital asset space is substantial, having already invested in 11 digital asset companies. These investments span services such as compliance, cryptocurrency data, and blockchain management. The firm’s digital asset team has grown to over 70 members, including a dedicated crypto options and derivatives trading desk.

A significant aspect of Goldman Sachs’ strategy is the tokenization of traditional financial instruments. The bank is leveraging blockchain technologies and smart contracts to enable digital issuance for clients across debt, equities, funds, and derivatives. This approach aims to digitize the end-to-end lifecycle of these assets, enhancing efficiency and liquidity.

McDermott highlighted the benefits of tokenization, noting that digitizing the lifecycle of asset issuance not only improves operational efficiency but also increases liquidity by potentially bringing in a wider group of investors. He pointed out that fractionalizing products and offering them to a broader universe of investors could broaden distribution channels and concentrate more secondary liquidity.

The bank’s involvement in the Canton Network, a public blockchain network developed for financial institutions, underscores its commitment to blockchain integration. Launched in 2023 by a consortium including Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, and Deloitte, the network aims to connect disparate financial systems while meeting regulatory and privacy requirements. In October 2024, a pilot involving 27 market participants, including Euroclear and the World Gold Council, successfully tokenized gilts, eurobonds, and gold on the Canton Network.

Goldman Sachs is also exploring opportunities in the crypto bankruptcy claims market. McDermott indicated that the bank is actively looking at investing in crypto bankruptcy claims, viewing it as a strategic opportunity amid the evolving digital asset landscape.

The bank’s focus on digital assets extends to its own product offerings. In April, Goldman Sachs launched its first bitcoin-secured loan and executed its first bitcoin options trade, marking significant milestones for a major Wall Street bank. These developments are part of the firm’s broader strategy to expand its crypto product suite while adhering to regulatory standards.

Strategy, formerly known as MicroStrategy, reported a substantial first-quarter loss of $4.22 billion, equating to $16.49 per share, as the company intensified its commitment to Bitcoin amidst volatile market conditions. This marks the firm’s fifth consecutive quarterly loss, primarily driven by a $5.91 billion unrealized loss on its cryptocurrency holdings, reflecting the impact of Bitcoin’s price fluctuations on its financial statements.

Despite the financial setback, Strategy expanded its Bitcoin holdings by acquiring an additional 80,715 BTC during the quarter, bringing its total to 553,555 BTC, valued at approximately $52 billion. This aggressive accumulation underscores the company’s unwavering belief in Bitcoin as a strategic asset, even as it grapples with the inherent volatility of the cryptocurrency market.

To finance further acquisitions, Strategy announced plans to issue $21 billion in new shares, a move that signals its intent to deepen its investment in Bitcoin. This equity offering is part of the company’s broader strategy to leverage capital markets in support of its cryptocurrency-focused treasury approach.

The company’s financial performance reflects the challenges of its Bitcoin-centric strategy. Revenue for the quarter stood at $111.1 million, a 3.6% decline compared to the same period last year, falling short of analyst expectations. The adoption of fair value accounting has made Strategy’s earnings more susceptible to Bitcoin’s price swings, introducing significant volatility into its financial reporting.

Despite these challenges, Strategy’s stock has demonstrated resilience, rising 32% year-to-date, outperforming the Nasdaq 100 index, which has declined nearly 6% over the same period. This performance suggests investor confidence in the company’s long-term vision, even as it navigates short-term financial headwinds.

Strategy’s approach has positioned it as a prominent player in the corporate adoption of Bitcoin, holding more than 2.6% of the cryptocurrency’s total supply. The company’s aggressive accumulation strategy and significant equity offerings highlight its commitment to integrating Bitcoin into its corporate treasury, setting a precedent for other firms considering similar moves.

Abu Dhabi-based investment firm MGX has committed $2 billion to cryptocurrency exchange Binance, marking the largest institutional investment in the platform’s history. The transaction, announced at the TOKEN2049 conference in Dubai, is being conducted using USD1, a stablecoin introduced by World Liberty Financial, a venture associated with former U.S. President Donald Trump.

USD1 is a dollar-pegged stablecoin fully backed by U.S. Treasuries, cash, and equivalents, designed to maintain a consistent value of $1. The coin was unveiled by World Liberty Financial, a decentralized finance platform launched in 2024 with Donald Trump serving as its “chief crypto advocate.” The venture includes his sons and Barron Trump in key roles. Zach Witkoff, co-founder of World Liberty Financial and son of Trump ally Steve Witkoff, announced the investment details during the conference.

MGX, established in 2024 by the Abu Dhabi government, has primarily focused on artificial intelligence investments. This $2 billion investment in Binance represents MGX’s first foray into the cryptocurrency sector. The firm aims to integrate AI, blockchain technology, and finance, aligning with the United Arab Emirates’ broader strategy to position itself as a global hub for digital assets and financial innovation.

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume, has faced regulatory challenges in recent years. In 2023, the company agreed to a $4.3 billion settlement with U.S. authorities over anti-money laundering violations, leading to the resignation of founder Changpeng Zhao. Richard Teng, who previously headed the Abu Dhabi Financial Services Regulatory Authority, now serves as Binance’s CEO. The exchange employs approximately 1,000 of its 5,000 global staff in the UAE, reflecting the region’s progressive stance on digital asset regulation.

The use of USD1 in this significant investment underscores the growing legitimacy of stablecoins in large-scale institutional transactions. However, the involvement of a Trump-linked cryptocurrency in a major international financial deal raises questions about potential conflicts of interest and regulatory implications, especially as Binance continues to navigate global compliance challenges.

Eric Trump, present at the TOKEN2049 conference, highlighted plans to integrate USD1 with Trump-branded properties in the UAE, further intertwining the family’s business interests with the cryptocurrency venture. This development comes as President Trump prepares for a state visit to Gulf nations, signaling a deepening of ties between the U.S. administration and Middle Eastern financial entities.

The investment by MGX not only provides significant capital to Binance but also strengthens its ties to the United Arab Emirates. The partnership is expected to enhance Binance’s standing with regulators worldwide and may encourage further institutional participation in cryptocurrency markets. Industry analysts suggest that this move could trigger a domino effect, potentially leading to increased institutional investment in the crypto sector.

Charles Schwab, one of the largest investment firms globally with over $10 trillion in assets under management, is set to launch spot cryptocurrency trading within the next 12 months. CEO Rick Wurster confirmed the timeline during the company’s first-quarter earnings call, stating that the firm is preparing to offer direct access to digital assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum by April 2026.

Wurster attributed the move to a significant surge in client interest, noting a 400% increase in traffic to Schwab’s cryptocurrency-related content. Approximately 70% of this traffic came from prospective clients, indicating a strong demand for crypto trading services among new investors.

The firm’s decision aligns with a broader trend among traditional financial institutions entering the cryptocurrency market. Morgan Stanley is also preparing to offer crypto trading through its E*Trade platform, aiming for a launch next year.

Schwab’s cautious approach to cryptocurrency is evident in its current offerings, which include indirect exposure through exchange-traded funds and other investment products. The company has previously warned clients about the risks associated with digital assets, emphasizing that cryptocurrencies could become worthless.

Despite these warnings, Schwab has been laying the groundwork for a more direct entry into the crypto space. In 2023, the firm co-founded EDX Markets, a non-custodial cryptocurrency exchange backed by Fidelity and Citadel Securities. EDX Markets began trading Bitcoin, Ether, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash, providing a platform for institutional investors to engage in cryptocurrency trading.

The regulatory environment in the United States has become more favorable for cryptocurrency trading under the current administration. The Federal Reserve has eased restrictions, removing supervisory letters that previously discouraged banks from engaging in crypto-related activities. This shift has encouraged financial institutions like Schwab and Morgan Stanley to expand their cryptocurrency offerings.

Schwab’s planned rollout of spot crypto trading is expected to make digital asset trading more accessible to everyday investors through its trusted platform. The firm aims to meet rising investor demand for easier access to cryptocurrencies, positioning itself as a competitive player in the evolving financial landscape.

While the firm is optimistic about the potential of digital assets, it continues to approach the sector with caution. Schwab’s website still warns that crypto investments carry the risk of becoming entirely worthless, asserting that digital assets like Bitcoin lack intrinsic value.

Donald Trump, upon commencing his second term as the 47th President of the United States, proclaimed the onset of a “golden age” for the nation. His inauguration speech outlined an ambitious agenda aimed at reshaping domestic and foreign policies, with immediate and far-reaching implications.

Central to Trump’s address was a commitment to restoring national sovereignty and security. He announced the declaration of a national emergency at the southern border, emphasizing the cessation of illegal immigration. This move aligns with his broader immigration strategy, which includes the suspension of refugee admissions and the initiation of efforts to end birthright citizenship.

In a significant restructuring of the federal government, Trump introduced the Department of Government Efficiency , led by Elon Musk. This new department is tasked with streamlining government operations and reducing bureaucratic inefficiencies. Early reports indicate that D.O.G.E. has already identified potential savings amounting to $150 billion.

Trump’s economic policies focus on revitalizing American industry and addressing trade imbalances. He announced the implementation of steep tariffs, particularly targeting imports from China, Mexico, and Canada. Additionally, he introduced the concept of an “External Revenue Service” to collect tariffs and taxes from foreign entities, aiming to bolster domestic revenue streams.

Environmental regulations underwent immediate revisions, with Trump revoking the electric vehicle mandate and withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement. He emphasized a return to fossil fuel production, including the reinstatement of coal mining operations, positioning these actions as measures to protect American jobs and energy independence.

On social policy, Trump declared that the U.S. government would officially recognize only two genders: male and female. He also announced the dismantling of the Department of Education and the repeal of diversity and inclusion measures, advocating for a merit-based, colorblind society.

Internationally, Trump signaled a shift in foreign policy by expressing intentions to reclaim the Panama Canal and by withdrawing from the World Health Organization. He also imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court, reflecting a broader strategy of redefining U.S. engagement with global institutions.

Notably absent from Trump’s speech was any mention of cryptocurrency or Bitcoin. This omission had immediate repercussions in the financial markets. Bitcoin’s value dropped by 3.2%, and the $TRUMP memecoin experienced a 15% decline. The broader cryptocurrency market saw liquidations exceeding $1.2 billion, marking one of the most significant downturns in the sector’s history.

Tether, the issuer of the world’s most traded stablecoin, is preparing to launch a new U.S.-based digital dollar product as early as late 2025 or early 2026, contingent on the progress of stablecoin legislation in Congress. The move signals a strategic pivot as the company seeks to enter the domestic market it has long avoided.

Chief Executive Paolo Ardoino confirmed that the company is developing a separate stablecoin tailored to U.S. regulatory requirements and consumer preferences. Unlike its flagship token, USDT—which dominates global stablecoin circulation with a market capitalisation of nearly $150 billion—this new offering would be issued through a U.S.-based entity and designed to comply with forthcoming federal oversight.

Ardoino described USDT as one of the most successful financial exports of the United States, noting its widespread use in emerging markets as a hedge against inflation and currency instability. However, he acknowledged that U.S. consumers have largely gravitated toward alternatives like Circle’s USDC, which has gained traction amid growing bipartisan support for stablecoin regulation.

The proposed U.S.-specific stablecoin is expected to function as a digital checking account, integrating with point-of-sale systems and offering seamless transaction capabilities. Tether envisions a broader blockchain-powered payment network that could rival existing platforms like Square, potentially transforming the way consumers and merchants interact with digital assets.

This initiative coincides with a significant shift in the U.S. regulatory landscape. President Donald Trump’s administration has expressed support for cryptocurrency innovation, with key legislation such as the STABLE Act and the GENIUS Act advancing through Congress. These bills aim to establish clear guidelines for stablecoin issuers, including mandatory reserve requirements and regular audits, to enhance transparency and financial stability.

Tether’s decision to develop a U.S.-compliant stablecoin reflects its commitment to aligning with these regulatory changes. The company has engaged in discussions with U.S. lawmakers and regulators to ensure that its new product meets the necessary standards. Ardoino emphasized Tether’s proactive collaboration with law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Justice, to address concerns related to illicit activities and compliance.

Despite its global success, Tether has faced scrutiny over the transparency of its reserves and its lack of formal audits. In response, the company has appointed a Chief Financial Officer and is pursuing a full audit, engaging with major accounting firms to bolster credibility. These steps are part of a broader effort to enhance trust and demonstrate Tether’s readiness to operate within the U.S. regulatory framework. , Tether considers US-only stablecoin as Trump loosens crypto rules)

Dubai hosted the TOKEN2049 crypto conference on Wednesday, drawing approximately 15,000 attendees, including executives from major firms like BlackRock, Goldman Sachs, and Binance. The event, featuring a scheduled appearance by Eric Trump, highlighted both the sector’s resilience and the diminishing enthusiasm surrounding President Donald Trump’s pro-crypto stance.

President Trump, once a sceptic of digital currencies, has positioned himself as a champion of the crypto industry, launching his own cryptocurrency and pledging to ease regulatory constraints. However, the anticipated surge in market performance has not materialised; Bitcoin has declined by over 10% from its peak of $109,225 since Trump’s inauguration, reflecting investor concerns over the pace of policy implementation and broader economic uncertainties.

Despite these challenges, the crypto sector has witnessed significant investment activity. In the first quarter of 2025, global venture capital funding in the industry reached $5.4 billion, marking the strongest performance since mid-2022. Notable deals include Twenty One Capital’s planned $3.6 billion SPAC merger, Ripple’s $1.25 billion acquisition of Hidden Road, and Kraken’s $1.5 billion deal with futures broker NinjaTrader. Galaxy Digital is also set for a Nasdaq listing after securing SEC approval.

Dubai’s emergence as a crypto hub is evident, with initiatives such as Binance receiving a $2 billion investment from Abu Dhabi’s MGX, developers accepting Bitcoin for real estate transactions, and Emirates NBD launching crypto services. The Dubai Multi Commodities Centre has announced plans for a new “crypto tower” by 2027, further cementing the city’s position in the global crypto landscape.

In the United States, the Trump administration has taken steps to foster a more crypto-friendly environment. Regulatory agencies, including the Federal Reserve, FDIC, and OCC, have rolled back previous guidance that urged caution for banks engaging in cryptocurrency activities. The SEC has dropped lawsuits against major crypto firms like Coinbase and Ripple, and a dedicated crypto task force has been established to address the regulatory needs of the evolving digital asset space.

President Trump’s executive order establishing the U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, holding approximately 200,000 BTC from seizures, has positioned the United States as the largest sovereign Bitcoin holder. However, the announcement initially caused Bitcoin’s price to drop by 5.7% before recovering, indicating market sensitivity to policy developments.

While the administration’s pro-crypto stance has invigorated the market, some investors remain cautious. The launch of Trump-themed cryptocurrencies, such as the $Trump coin, has faced criticism and underperformance, with the coin’s value plummeting by 50% following the debut of a similar token by First Lady Melania Trump.

Eric Trump, son of former U.S. President Donald Trump, has issued a stark warning to the global banking industry: without embracing cryptocurrency, particularly Bitcoin, banks could face extinction within the next decade. In a bold statement, he emphasised that financial institutions must adapt to the evolving landscape of digital finance or risk being rendered obsolete by the rise of decentralised financial systems. Trump’s remarks come at a […]

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has concluded its investigation into PayPal’s U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, PYUSD, without pursuing any enforcement action, according to the company’s regulatory filing dated April 29. This development removes a significant regulatory hurdle for PayPal’s digital asset initiative.

The SEC’s inquiry began in November 2023 when PayPal received a subpoena from the Division of Enforcement, requesting documents related to the launch and structure of PYUSD. PayPal stated that it fully cooperated with the SEC’s requests. In February, the SEC notified PayPal that it had concluded its investigation and did not intend to recommend any enforcement action. Investigation With No Enforcement Action, The SEC drops investigation into PayPal’s stablecoin – Mitrade)

PYUSD, launched in August 2023, is designed to be fully backed by U.S. dollar deposits, including short-term Treasuries and cash equivalents, and is redeemable at a 1:1 ratio with the U.S. dollar. Despite its backing and PayPal’s prominent position in the digital payments space, PYUSD has faced challenges in gaining significant market share in a stablecoin market dominated by competitors like Tether and Circle. Investigation With No Enforcement Action, PayPal Says SEC Drops Probe Into Its Dollar-Pegged Stablecoin)

As of April 2025, PYUSD’s market capitalization stands at approximately $880 million, representing less than 1% of Tether’s $148.5 billion market cap. However, the stablecoin has experienced growth in 2025, with a 75% increase in circulating supply since the beginning of the year, although it remains 14% below its peak supply of just over $1 billion in August 2024.

PayPal has introduced initiatives aimed at bolstering PYUSD’s adoption. On April 23, the company announced a new loyalty offering that allows U.S. users to earn 3.7% annually for holding PYUSD on the platform. Additionally, on April 24, PayPal revealed a partnership with Coinbase to enhance the adoption of PYUSD, aiming to drive new and innovative use cases within the cryptocurrency community.

The SEC’s decision to close the investigation into PYUSD without enforcement action aligns with a broader trend of the agency concluding several crypto-related cases. In recent months, the SEC has ended probes into companies such as Crypto.com, Robinhood Crypto, Coinbase, and Gemini, indicating a potential shift in the regulatory approach towards the cryptocurrency industry. Investigation With No Enforcement Action)

This regulatory clarity comes as PayPal reported strong first-quarter earnings, with earnings per share surpassing Wall Street forecasts at $1.33 and revenue rising 1% year-over-year to $7.8 billion. The company also highlighted the completion of significant share repurchase activities during the quarter. Investigation With No Enforcement Action)

Telegram has partnered with Libre to tokenize $500 million worth of bonds, marking a significant step in the integration of traditional financial instruments with blockchain technology. This collaboration is set to bring Telegram’s bond offerings onto The Open Network , a blockchain designed to enable scalable and fast transactions. The move represents a noteworthy expansion of Telegram’s efforts to bridge the gap between conventional finance and decentralised finance .

The Telegram Bond Fund will serve as a platform through which these tokenized assets can be utilised within DeFi protocols. This integration allows the bonds, typically constrained to traditional markets, to become part of the rapidly growing blockchain-based financial ecosystem. By leveraging the TON network, Telegram and Libre aim to make bond trading more accessible, transparent, and efficient, tapping into the growing demand for tokenised assets in the DeFi space.

The use of blockchain technology for tokenizing bonds allows for fractional ownership, providing an opportunity for retail investors to participate in markets traditionally dominated by institutional investors. Blockchain’s inherent security and transparency features are expected to provide an additional layer of trust and legitimacy to bond markets. Investors will be able to trade these tokenized bonds with greater speed and efficiency compared to conventional methods, which often involve lengthy settlement times and high fees.

The Telegram Bond Fund’s tokenisation process will employ the TON blockchain to ensure a seamless transfer of digital assets. This process allows for bonds to be divided into smaller units, or tokens, which can be traded and transferred across the TON network. Each token will represent a share in the underlying bond, enabling investors to buy, sell, or hold them as they would any other digital asset. This could have profound implications for both the bond market and the broader DeFi space, which has long sought to integrate more traditional financial products into its decentralised framework.

For Telegram, the move is a strategic effort to expand its financial ecosystem beyond its messaging platform. Telegram has already introduced several innovative features, including its TON-based cryptocurrency wallet and TON coin. By introducing tokenised bonds, Telegram is broadening its financial services, positioning itself as a key player in the intersection of social media, messaging, and decentralised finance. The platform’s large user base offers a unique advantage, providing instant access to millions of potential investors who may be drawn to the ease of using Telegram for both social communication and financial transactions.

Libre’s role in the partnership is crucial, as it will facilitate the actual process of tokenisation and integration with DeFi protocols. The company has built its reputation by bridging traditional finance with blockchain technology, creating platforms that allow traditional assets to be digitised and traded on decentralised networks. Libre’s expertise in this area will enable the successful launch and operation of the Telegram Bond Fund, ensuring that the tokenised bonds adhere to the necessary legal and regulatory standards.

The integration of tokenised bonds into DeFi protocols opens up new possibilities for yield generation and liquidity provision. Investors will not only be able to buy and hold these digital bonds, but also engage in activities such as staking or lending within the TON network’s decentralised finance protocols. This could provide an additional avenue for users to earn returns on their investments, further increasing the appeal of tokenised bonds in the DeFi space.

As blockchain technology continues to mature, tokenisation of traditional assets like bonds is becoming increasingly common. This trend reflects a broader movement towards digitising traditional financial systems to make them more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly. For years, the potential for blockchain to revolutionise financial markets has been discussed, but the adoption of tokenisation is now gaining significant traction, with many believing that the future of finance lies in decentralised networks and digital assets.

Telegram’s entry into the bond tokenisation space is another step towards fulfilling this vision, making it possible for individuals to participate in financial markets in ways that were previously unavailable. It also signals the increasing importance of platforms like TON, which offer an infrastructure capable of supporting large-scale tokenisation projects. With the backing of a messaging platform as influential as Telegram, the success of this venture could pave the way for more established financial institutions to consider similar integrations with blockchain networks.

The regulatory landscape surrounding tokenisation remains a complex issue. While blockchain technology offers many advantages, including transparency and decentralisation, it also presents challenges in terms of legal compliance, especially when it comes to securities laws. However, Telegram’s entry into this market, along with the legal oversight provided by Libre, suggests that the project is designed to meet regulatory requirements, which may help alleviate concerns about the legality and legitimacy of tokenised bonds.

A federal judge in Texas has ruled that the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control acted beyond its legal authority when it sanctioned the cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash, permanently barring the agency from reimposing such sanctions.

Judge Robert Pitman of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas issued the decision on April 28, stating that OFAC’s designation of Tornado Cash’s smart contracts in August 2022 exceeded the agency’s statutory powers. The court’s ruling follows OFAC’s earlier action on March 21, 2025, when it officially removed Tornado Cash from its Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List, effectively lifting the sanctions.

The sanctions had been imposed on Tornado Cash for allegedly facilitating the laundering of over $7 billion in virtual currencies, including funds stolen by North Korea’s Lazarus Group. However, the court found that OFAC’s action against the platform’s autonomous smart contracts was not supported by the International Emergency Economic Powers Act , which governs the agency’s sanctioning authority.

In November 2024, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit had already determined that OFAC had overstepped its authority by sanctioning Tornado Cash’s immutable smart contracts, which do not qualify as “property” under federal law. This appellate decision laid the groundwork for the Texas district court’s subsequent ruling, which emphasized that OFAC cannot reimpose sanctions on Tornado Cash in the future.

Despite the lifting of sanctions, the legal challenges for Tornado Cash’s developers persist. Roman Storm and Roman Semenov, co-founders of the platform, were indicted in August 2023 by the U.S. Department of Justice on charges including conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business, and conspiracy to violate the IEEPA. The DOJ alleges that Tornado Cash was used to launder more than $1 billion in criminal proceeds, including hundreds of millions of dollars for the Lazarus Group.

Roman Storm was arrested in Washington State and is currently awaiting trial, scheduled for July 2025. Roman Semenov remains at large and has been added to OFAC’s sanctions list. Additionally, Alexey Pertsev, another developer associated with Tornado Cash, was arrested in the Netherlands in August 2022 and was sentenced in May 2024 to five years and four months in prison for money laundering.

The court’s decision has significant implications for the regulation of decentralized technologies. By ruling that OFAC cannot sanction autonomous smart contracts, the judgment underscores the challenges regulators face in applying traditional legal frameworks to decentralized platforms that operate without centralized control.

Strategy has expanded its Bitcoin holdings to 553,555 BTC, narrowing the gap with BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust , which holds 573,869 BTC. The 20,000 BTC difference underscores the escalating competition between the two entities for the largest institutional Bitcoin treasury.

The latest acquisition by Strategy involved purchasing 15,355 BTC for approximately $1.42 billion at an average price of $92,737 per coin. This purchase was funded through the sale of common and preferred stock, as detailed in a recent SEC filing. The company’s total Bitcoin holdings now represent about 2.6% of the cryptocurrency’s maximum supply of 21 million coins.

Michael Saylor, co-founder and executive chairman of Strategy, has been a vocal proponent of Bitcoin, positioning it as a primary treasury reserve asset. The company’s aggressive accumulation strategy has been facilitated by its “21/21 plan,” aiming to raise $42 billion through equity offerings and fixed-income securities for Bitcoin acquisitions.

BlackRock’s IBIT has also seen substantial growth, with its holdings reaching 573,869 BTC. The ETF has experienced significant capital inflows, including a $1.5 billion influx last week, reflecting growing investor interest in Bitcoin exposure through traditional financial instruments.

The narrowing gap between Strategy and BlackRock highlights the increasing institutional adoption of Bitcoin. Both entities’ substantial holdings signify a broader trend of traditional financial institutions embracing cryptocurrency as a legitimate asset class.
