South Korea’s stock market surged sharply, with benchmark indices climbing more than 12 per cent in a dramatic rally that placed the market on course for one of its strongest single-day performances on record. The sudden jump drew global attention as investors poured funds into major technology and export-driven companies, fuelling a broad-based rise across sectors. Trading data showed the benchmark KOSPI index soaring during the […]

The Iran war is reinforcing a market conviction already building around US monetary policy: interest rates are likely to stay higher for longer. The escalation in the Middle East is compounding expectations that the Federal Reserve will hold rates steady for several more months, pushing the first meaningful rate cut further into the year. Markets are pricing a very high probability – about 97% – that policymakers […]

China’s currency regained ground against the US dollar after the central bank delivered a stronger-than-expected official guidance rate, halting a short period of losses and signalling policymakers’ intent to stabilise foreign-exchange markets amid global volatility.

The yuan rebounded in both onshore and offshore trading after the People’s Bank of China lifted its daily midpoint setting by the largest margin in more than six months. The central bank fixed the yuan at 6.9088 per dollar, roughly 148 pips firmer than the previous guidance level, a move interpreted by traders as a deliberate effort to anchor expectations following two sessions of depreciation.

China operates a managed floating exchange rate system in which the yuan is permitted to trade within a band of two per cent above or below the daily midpoint set by the central bank. The fixing therefore serves as a powerful signal to markets about the authorities’ preferred direction for the currency.

Following the adjustment, the onshore yuan strengthened to around 6.88 per dollar during Asian trading hours, while its offshore counterpart posted similar gains. Currency dealers said the stronger guidance helped calm investors after geopolitical tensions and shifts in global risk sentiment had unsettled foreign-exchange markets earlier in the week.

Prior to the short-lived decline, the yuan had been on a sustained upward trajectory for several months, supported by a weaker US dollar, resilient export performance and continued capital inflows into China’s financial markets. The currency reached its strongest level since April 2023 during that rally, prompting concerns among policymakers that rapid appreciation could erode exporters’ competitiveness.

Authorities have responded with a series of calibrated measures aimed at smoothing the pace of currency gains rather than reversing them entirely. Among the most notable steps was the decision to remove a 20 per cent risk-reserve requirement on certain foreign-exchange forward contracts, effectively lowering the cost of betting against the yuan and encouraging market participants to buy dollars.

Analysts say such adjustments illustrate the central bank’s balancing act between maintaining exchange-rate stability and allowing market forces to play a greater role. Officials have repeatedly emphasised the importance of preventing excessive volatility while ensuring the currency reflects underlying economic fundamentals.

Currency strategists note that Beijing has a wide toolkit for influencing the yuan’s trajectory. These tools include modifying the daily reference rate, adjusting foreign-exchange reserve requirements for banks, and guiding state-owned financial institutions to participate in the market when volatility intensifies.

Despite the latest intervention through the midpoint setting, the fixing remained weaker than many market forecasts, highlighting the cautious stance adopted by policymakers. The approach suggests authorities are comfortable with moderate appreciation but wary of rapid movements that could unsettle financial markets or complicate domestic economic management.

China’s export-oriented companies have been particularly sensitive to exchange-rate fluctuations. A stronger yuan reduces the value of overseas earnings when converted into the local currency, potentially squeezing margins for manufacturers and technology firms whose revenues are denominated largely in dollars.

Market participants say the central bank’s latest move aims to reinforce stability while avoiding a signal that authorities intend to drive the currency significantly higher. Such signalling is important in an environment where global investors remain alert to geopolitical developments and shifts in US monetary policy.

The broader international context has also played a role in shaping currency movements. Escalating tensions in the Middle East have fuelled demand for traditional safe-haven assets, including the US dollar, prompting fluctuations across major currency pairs. For China, which relies heavily on imported energy, volatility in global markets can quickly translate into financial-market turbulence.

Attention among investors is now turning to the annual meetings of China’s national legislature and political advisory body, where policymakers are expected to outline economic priorities for the year ahead. The gatherings typically provide guidance on growth targets, fiscal policy and structural reforms that influence expectations for the yuan and other financial assets.

Economists are closely watching signals on monetary policy as well. Some analysts anticipate modest policy easing in the months ahead, including a potential reduction in benchmark lending rates and a cut to banks’ reserve requirement ratios aimed at supporting domestic demand.

Tokyo’s prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, has publicly disavowed any connection to a Solana-based meme cryptocurrency that suffered a dramatic collapse in value, asserting she and her office were unaware of its creation or trading activity. The digital token, which briefly had an eye-catching market cap in the tens of millions of dollars, has lost significant ground following her statement, underscoring the tangled dynamics between high-profile political figures and speculative crypto markets.

Takaichi took to her official social media account to address questions about the asset, which adopted her given name and circulated on the Solana blockchain. She said there appeared to be “various misunderstandings” over the name and market activity, stressing she had no prior knowledge of the token and that neither she nor her administration had authorised or endorsed it. The prime minister urged caution among investors and the broader public.

The token, widely referred to in trading circles as a meme coin, experienced wild fluctuations before its value slid by about three-quarters from earlier highs, according to market data. At one point, it drew attention with an inflated valuation that some tracking sites estimated around $27.7 million, although such figures can be volatile and highly sensitive to trading volume and liquidity levels on decentralised platforms.

Analysts say meme coins — especially those leveraging the names or likenesses of well-known personalities — have become a volatile sub-segment within the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem. These assets often lack a fundamental use case and instead draw speculative interest from traders betting on social momentum. When official figures distance themselves from such projects, confidence can evaporate quickly, leading to sharp price corrections.

Japan has long been among the more stringent jurisdictions in setting regulatory frameworks for digital assets. Its Payment Services Act and Financial Instruments and Exchange Act establish registration requirements and investor protection mechanisms for exchanges and token issuers operating within the country. However, this governance framework primarily targets regulated entities, leaving decentralised creations like meme tokens in a less clear-cut category. That regulatory ambiguity complicates efforts to police tokens that may be named after public figures without consent.

The sharp downturn in the coin’s price following Takaichi’s statement reflects how sentiments can shift dramatically in unregulated corners of crypto markets. Traders who had driven speculative interest in the token — buoyed by social media buzz — appear to have retreated as the prime minister’s denial circulated. Some onlookers also noted that meme coins relying on novelty or persona-based branding are particularly susceptible to pump-and-dump patterns, rewarding early holders at the expense of later investors when momentum fades.

Legal experts note that the use of a serving head of government’s name for a speculative financial instrument raises both ethical and legal questions. “The unauthorised use of a public official’s name in association with a financial product can mislead investors about endorsement or legitimacy,” said a fintech law specialist at a Tokyo university. “Enforcement is difficult when creators remain anonymous and operate outside regulated frameworks, but it invites scrutiny from both legal and policy perspectives.”

Market participants following the episode have pointed to wider trends in the crypto space. Solana, the blockchain on which the token was launched, is favoured by some developers for its low transaction costs and fast settlement times, making it a popular choice for experimental tokens and decentralised applications. Yet this very accessibility can also lower barriers for projects that have little substantive backing or oversight, heightening risk for retail investors.

For Japan’s financial regulators, the incident highlights the ongoing challenge of balancing innovation and investor protection. While the country has taken significant steps to legitimise and supervise digital asset markets, decentralised and anonymous token creations sit outside conventional regulatory reach. As such tokens proliferate beyond mainstream exchange listings, authorities may confront pressure to clarify how existing laws apply or to craft new measures tailored to emerging market behaviours.

Stock markets across India tumbled sharply as escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran heightened geopolitical risks and rattled investor confidence. The benchmark Sensex plunged by more than 1,000 points, slipping beneath the 81,000 mark, while the Nifty 50 index lost upwards of 300 points, breaching the crucial 25,000 support level as traders moved out of riskier assets. Over two trading sessions, equities have shed value significantly, wiping out approximately ₹11 lakh crore in market capitalisation, underlining how swiftly global geopolitics can translate into domestic financial stress.

The sell-off was driven by escalating military strikes between the United States and Israel against Iran, which led to the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader and triggered retaliatory actions across the region. This surge in hostilities has directly affected energy markets, pushing Brent crude oil prices upwards as disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz — a vital chokepoint for roughly a fifth of global oil shipments — raised concerns about supply. Higher oil prices have increased input costs for energy-importing economies and amplified inflationary pressures, prompting investors to reassess risk assets.

The immediate impact on Indian markets was stark. On Monday, the Sensex closed more than 1.3 per cent lower, its lowest finish in nearly six months, while the volatility index jumped sharply, reflecting heightened unease among traders. Nifty 50’s weakness on the trading floor mirrored broader pressure across key sectors, with energy, infrastructure and export-linked stocks bearing the brunt as sentiment deteriorated. Safe-haven assets such as gold saw notable gains as buyers sought refuge from equity market turmoil.

Analysts point out that crude oil’s swift ascent — fuelled by concerns over prolonged conflict and chokepoint disruptions — directly affects inflation and corporate margins. India imports a significant share of its crude from the Middle East, meaning sustained higher oil prices could widen the current account deficit and constrain monetary policy flexibility. As the cost of imported fuel rises, transport and manufacturing sectors may face margin pressure, posing broader economic challenges.

Sector-specific reactions were evident as aviation and consumer discretionary firms underperformed sharply, enduring heavier selling than other segments. Airlines canceling or rerouting flights due to closed Middle Eastern airspace compounded operational uncertainties for carriers with significant exposure to that region. By contrast, stocks of certain energy producers saw modest strength, as rising oil benchmarks can enhance their near-term earnings prospects.

Foreign institutional investors have been net sellers, exacerbating downward pressure on domestic bourses. Data from market intermediaries show significant outflows amid rising global risk aversion, with liquidity flowing into traditional safe havens including U. S. Treasuries and precious metals. This rotation underscores how geopolitical stress can quickly reframe investment priorities, often to the detriment of emerging market equities.

Currency markets reflected the strain, with the rupee depreciating against major currencies as capital outflows intensified. A weaker rupee further amplifies the impact of higher crude prices, raising import bills and potentially catalysing inflation. Bond markets reacted in kind, with yields on government securities climbing as investors demanded higher compensation for perceived risk and inflation expectations shifted.

Corporate India is also grappling with broader trade and supply chain disruptions. Chambers of commerce and industry bodies have flagged operational headwinds for exporters and manufacturers due to heightened shipping costs and logistical bottlenecks triggered by the conflict. Industries dependent on Middle East trade corridors or commodities now expect cost pressures and delivery delays that could dampen growth prospects over the quarter.

Global markets have not been immune to the fallout. European indices also slid as energy prices climbed and investor risk appetite waned, while U. S. equity futures oscillated amid mixed signals from corporate earnings and macroeconomic data. The global ripple effect highlights how interconnected financial systems are with geopolitical developments, where shocks in one region can quickly transmit across borders.

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach Newswire – 27 February 2026 – In his 2026-27 Budget announced on Wednesday (25 February), Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) outlined areas for comprehensively reinforcing the city’s position as a leading international financial hub.

Despite the complex and ever-changing external environment, Mr Chan noted that Hong Kong’s financial market had performed strongly and the city’s financial system remains robust.

HKSAR’s Financial Secretary, Paul Chan (second left), outlines areas for comprehensively reinforcing the city’s position as a leading international financial hub

In 2025, Hong Kong ranked first globally for funds raised through initial public offerings.

“We will continue to consolidate our existing strengths, tap into emerging fields, strengthen market systems and risk control and deepen financial co-operation in the Greater Bay Area,” Mr Chan said. “By doing so, we will enhance Hong Kong’s role as an international financial centre on all fronts and contribute to the national strategic goal of ‘accelerating China’s development as a financial powerhouse’ “.

With Hong Kong being the world’s largest hub for offshore Renminbi (RMB) business, the Financial Secretary said the city would leverage its unique strengths and proactively align with national development strategies.

For advancing the internationalisation of the RMB, Mr Chan said Hong Kong would facilitate the wider use of RMB in activities such as trade and cross-boundary business; reduce transaction costs; enrich product offerings in the offshore RMB market; improve price discovery in the short-to-medium-term-interest-rate market; and attract high-quality issuers to increase RMB bond issuance in Hong Kong.

In 2025, the stock market delivered a stellar performance. The Hang Seng Index rose by 28 per cent over the year. The daily turnover surged by 90 per cent to a historic high of close to $250 billion (US$32 billion).

Mr Chan said the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) would continue enhancing the securities market, attracting issuers and boosting market efficiency.

“We will also introduce the next stage of reforms, including enhancing the regulatory regime for listed companies, providing specific guidelines for overseas companies seeking secondary listing in Hong Kong, offering more overseas markets as recognised exchanges, and continuing to explore with the market the provision of an over-the-counter trading platform for delisted stocks or those requiring special handling.

“The electronic bond-trading platform will also be launched in the second half of this year, thereby reinforcing Hong Kong’s position as a global fixed income and currency hub,” he said.

To attract more family offices and funds to set up in Hong Kong, Mr Chan said Hong Kong would enhance the tax regime, including expanding the scope of “fund” to cover specific funds-of-one, as well as classifying digital assets, precious metals, and specified commodities, etc. as qualifying investments eligible for tax concessions.

Regarding the development of digital assets, the Government published the second policy statement for developing Hong Kong into a global hub for digital asset innovation through the establishment of a comprehensive regulatory framework.

A bill will be introduced this year to establish licensing regimes for, among others, digital asset dealing and custodian service providers.

“We will also explore the adoption of electronic signature for bond issuance documents and the digitalisation of bearer bonds,” Mr Chan said.

To promote the application of fintech and enhance the efficiency of the asset management market, the CMU OmniClear, a market infrastructure operator established by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, will establish a digital asset platform this year. It will support the issuance and settlement of digital bonds. The platform will also be gradually extended to other digital assets and linked with other tokenisation platforms in the region, consolidating Hong Kong’s leading role in the realm of digital assets.

In order to build an international gold trading market in Hong Kong, Mr Chan said the Government would explore offering tax incentives for eligible institutions conducting gold trading and settlement in Hong Kong; assist the industry in setting up an industry-led trade association to consolidate resources, step up promotion, and foster ties with industry stakeholders from around the world; and help the industry keep abreast of the latest gold market developments, acquire relevant skills and develop a training framework.
