Abu Dhabi’s Hub71 has forged a strengthened alliance with the Japan External Trade Organization aimed at building deeper cross-border innovation, particularly in Web3, AI, spatial intelligence and sustainable tech sectors. Hub71 used its presence at Tokyo’s WebX and the Blockchain Leaders Summit to push forward new collaboration programmes and investment pathways.

At these events, Hub71 spotlighted a number of startups from Abu Dhabi—among them bitgrit, xMap, Aqua Development, Chainsight, Nodeshift, Bit2Me and 1Money—making connections with Japanese investors, corporate entities and ecosystem partners. The showcasing was closely aligned with Japan’s innovation priorities, including governance in blockchain and sustainable water solutions.

Key to the partnership is the launch of the J-StarX Programme, developed jointly by Hub71, JETRO and Elixir Capital, which will host seven Japanese Web3 startups in Abu Dhabi to facilitate scale-ups, market access, and ecosystem integration. Entrepreneurs in this programme will benefit from capital, mentoring, regulatory guidance and networking in the UAE’s tech environment.

Hub71 also assumed title-sponsorship of the Blockchain Leaders Summit in Tokyo, delivering the opening keynote. Executives emphasised the UAE’s position as an enabling region for innovators seeking overseas expansion, and positioned Abu Dhabi as a gateway for startups to penetrate Asia on one side and Middle East markets on the other.

Peter Abou Hachem, Head of Growth and Strategy at Hub71, stated that the collaboration underscores “the value of global connectivity”, and that Japan’s leadership in Web3 and innovation aligns with Hub71’s mission. He noted that through partners like JETRO, both ecosystems can unlock opportunities in market reach, talent exchange and frontier technologies.

Singapore is witnessing a sharp decline in wealthy mainland Chinese individuals relocating to the city-state, driven by stricter financial regulation, tougher compliance requirements, and more burdensome permanent residence and family-office rules. The flow is shifting instead toward Hong Kong, Japan and the Middle East.

Applications from wealthy Chinese seeking family office status or residency in Singapore have dropped by about 50 per cent compared to 2022, according to legal advisers involved in vetting such clients. One lawyer noted that platforms offering cryptocurrency, tokenised equity or stablecoins must now obtain licensing even when serving clients outside Singapore, and approval will be rare. Minimum capital thresholds have been introduced, along with anti-money laundering, technology-risk and conduct obligations.

The Fujian money-laundering scandal of 2023 is widely cited as a turning point. Following that case, Singapore’s financial institutions and regulators re-screened clients and intensified know-your-customer processes. Some family office applications have taken over a year to process; others have been rejected or delayed because of stricter background checks, including detailed disclosures about dependents and family relationships that many find invasive.

Hong Kong has responded by making entry and residency procedures easier. Earlier this year, its Capital Investment Entrant Scheme was reformed so that applicants need only six months of asset holding instead of two years, and family-held wealth or investments via family companies are now accepted. Dubai and Japan are similarly pulling ahead with more streamlined family office incentives.

Henley & Partners projects that only 1,600 millionaires will move to Singapore in 2025, less than half the number projected in the previous year. Meanwhile, many Chinese family offices already based in Singapore are relocating their operations back to Hong Kong or setting up in the Middle East or Japan.

Regulation focusing on crypto activity has been particularly discouraging. New rules require licensing for platforms offering crypto or tokenised financial products even to clients outside Singapore; approvals are expected to be rare and compliance burdens steep. Some crypto firms have already departed because of the regulatory regime.

Abu Dhabi Global Market recorded more than 11,000 active licences and a striking 42 per cent rise in assets under management in the first half of 2025, underpinning its emergence as the Middle East and North Africa region’s leading international financial centre. ADGM Exceeds 11,000 Licences, AUM Surges 42 %.

The expansion sees ADGM surpass AED 500 billion in market capitalisation of its listed entities on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, reflecting its pivotal role in strengthening the emirate’s non-oil economy, which grew to 9.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2025.

More than 2,970 firms—comprising 308 financial and 2,664 non-financial entities—are now operating from ADGM, marking a 42 per cent year-on-year increase. The centre issued 1,869 new licences during the period, the highest ever in a half-year span, up by 47 per cent from the previous year.

Asset management continued to thrive: ADGM is now home to 154 fund and asset managers overseeing 209 funds, driving AUM up by 42 per cent over the year to June 2025.

Powerful global partnerships fuelled the centre’s momentum. Fortress Investment Group set up an office in ADGM and joined a US$1 billion co-investment venture with Mubadala. Kimmeridge opened its ADGM branch and inked an MoU with Mubadala Energy to develop natural gas and LNG projects. Meanwhile, IHC, BlackRock and ADGM-based Lunate launched an AI-native reinsurance platform worth over US$1 billion. A private credit joint venture between Mubadala and Alpha Dhabi scaled to US$2.5 billion—all anchored at ADGM.

ADGM’s increasing workforce reflects its expanding influence: by end-June 2025, nearly 36,000 professionals were working across Al Maryah and Al Reem Islands.

ADGM’s achievements are underpinned by enhanced regulatory frameworks. The Financial Services Regulatory Authority issued 52 In-Principle Approvals and 45 new Financial Services Permissions. The Registration Authority implemented improvements such as the AccessRP digital platform for property interest verification, Commercial Permit Regulations to support non-financial businesses, and revised fees to simplify market entry. Mutual recognition of digital platforms with Astana International Financial Centre and a 223 per cent increase in supervision assessments further underscore ADGM’s commitment to governance and global alignment.

International engagement has also grown: ADGM participated in CityWeek 2025 in London, held roadshows in China and Japan, and concluded MoUs with regulators in Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Hong Kong and Sweden. These moves have promoted cross-border regulatory collaboration, innovation in capital markets, and sustainable finance initiatives.

FedEx has gained an economic licence from Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation to operate as a foreign air carrier, marking a significant expansion of its logistics footprint in the Kingdom. The move equips FedEx to conduct scheduled cargo services via King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, with plans to operate 24 flights per month from early September 2025, establishing Riyadh as its regional hub linking continents.

The licence, granted on 2 September 2025, grants FedEx the ability to fly directly and to integrate air and ground operations across the Gulf Cooperation Council states. The announcement was made during a ceremony in Diriyah, attended by senior officials including Saleh Al‑Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of GACA; Abdulaziz Al‑Duailej, GACA President; and Dr Rumaih Al‑Rumaih, Acting President of the Transport General Authority, alongside FedEx executives.

FedEx introduced its first nonstop freighter service from the United States and Europe into Riyadh, operating six times a week with Boeing 777 aircraft. This route is the only express logistics connection offered by FedEx that bypasses other hubs, and continues onward to Guangzhou and Shanghai.

This direct link strengthens trade routes, particularly for high-priority sectors like energy, manufacturing, mining, healthcare and automotive, enabling temperature‑controlled, heavy, oversized or hazardous shipments. FedEx complements this airlift with its FedEx Logistics suite—air, road and sea freight forwarding, customs brokerage, and transit cargo support—aimed at enhancing supply chain resilience across the GCC, South Asia and Africa.

The company has developed end‑to‑end capabilities in the Kingdom, directly managing pickup, delivery and customs clearance through four gateways and four stations, supplemented by digital tools for shipping visibility and efficiency.

FedEx leadership emphasises Saudi Arabia’s role as a strategic logistics hub connecting Asia, Europe and the Americas. Richard Smith, Chief Operating Officer, International and CEO of the Airline at FedEx, cited the Kingdom’s infrastructure as a vital link in their global network. Kami Viswanathan, President of FedEx Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa, underlined the integration of infrastructure, digital innovation and integrated solutions to aid Saudi businesses in competing globally.

These moves align closely with Saudi Vision 2030. The Aviation Programme aims to elevate Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector to the highest regional standards, targeting 330 million passengers, 4.5 million tonnes of air cargo, and air connectivity to 250 destinations by 2030. FedEx’s operations support these objectives by advancing industry capacity and reinforcing Riyadh’s prominence in logistics.

The expansion follows challenges earlier this year, when FedEx suspended economy parcel and freight services to the Kingdom from countries including India, Japan and the UK in March 2025. Service was halted temporarily, with FedEx noting it would resume “as soon as possible.”

Trade levels in Saudi Arabia have surged. The Kingdom posted a trade surplus of US$ 16.8 billion in Q1 2025, up 52 percent on the prior quarter, reflecting strong exports and demand for logistics infrastructure that FedEx is now well‑positioned to serve.

With strategic investments—including the creation of a global head office in Riyadh to oversee operations across Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar—FedEx reinforces its long‑term commitment to the region.

This expansion signals a departure from reliance on intermediaries or regional hubs outside the Kingdom; FedEx now controls its entire customs-to-delivery chain in Riyadh, laying the groundwork for faster transit, improved service reliability and deeper integration into global trade networks.

Emerging trends include rising demand for integrated logistics services, investment in digital tools for customs and tracking, and regional consolidation of supply chain operations. Key players alongside FedEx include Saudi authorities driving Vision 2030’s transport strategy, while GCC markets and commercial sectors increasingly rely on swift, dependable global connectivity.

EdgeConneX has secured a second site in the Greater Osaka–Yawata region, expanding its Japanese data centre capacity to a combined total of 350 MW of utility power. The newly acquired location is slated to deliver an additional 150 MW once fully built, complementing the 200 MW project unveiled earlier in the year.

A formal ceremony marking this milestone occurred on 7 August, in partnership with Keihan Real Estate — a subsidiary of the Keihan Group, rooted in over a century of railway heritage and now operating across transportation, property, retail and leisure sectors.

EdgeConneX’s entry into Japan began in January 2025 with the announcement of its inaugural 200 MW campus in the Greater Osaka–Kyoto area. Construction of that site is slated to commence in early 2026, with the first phase expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2027.

The company’s rapid expansion—achieving 350 MW in just over six months—underscores the burgeoning requirement for cloud and high‑density AI infrastructure in one of Asia’s most dynamic digital markets.

Designed to support workloads exceeding 600 kW per rack, both facilities will deploy EdgeConneX’s “Ingenuity” high-density product suite, tailored to accommodate advanced hardware from NVIDIA, AMD and Intel.

EdgeConneX has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability, aiming for carbon, waste and water neutrality by 2030. All Japanese data centres are to be powered by renewable energy, efforts that have helped the firm earn top marks in both efficiency and transparency in Structure Research’s 2023 and 2024 Environmental Impact rankings.

Masahiko Inoue, Head of Japan for EdgeConneX, conveyed that the swift deployment demonstrates the firm’s vision taking tangible form, reinforcing Japan’s role as a global Cloud and AI frontrunner. Sam Lee, Managing Director for Market & Commercial Development, highlighted that this expansion reflects EdgeConneX’s strategy to deliver scalable, dependable and eco-conscious infrastructure in a market facing power constraints amid rising digital demand.

This development underscores Osaka’s evolving status as a critical node for digital infrastructure in Japan, aligning with national ambitions such as the “Digital Garden City Nation” vision. As the Japanese government and private sector chart pathways toward accelerated digital transformation, EdgeConneX’s presence positions it among the largest data centre operators in the Kansai region.

Global logistics investor GLP will receive up to $1.5 billion from a wholly owned subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, signalling the sovereign wealth fund’s first move from limited partner to direct stakeholder in the firm. The initial capital deployment of $500 million is earmarked for expanding GLP’s operations in logistics, digital infrastructure, and renewable energy, with further investment to follow in coming months.

The capital infusion aligns with growing global demand across sectors driven by e‑commerce growth, artificial intelligence and cloud adoption, and the green energy transition. GLP’s data‑centre division is notably thriving: its annual revenue surged 43 percent year‑on‑year to US $193 million.

GLP oversees approximately US $80 billion in assets through its management arm, GLP Capital Partners. This move marks a strategic shift for ADIA—long an investor in GLP’s funds—into becoming a direct shareholder in the global investment group.

In a statement, GLP co‑founder and chief executive Ming Z Mei emphasised that the enhanced capital base and strategic partnership will enable the company to “accelerate growth” and capitalise on the “secular expansion of new economy sectors in which we operate.” Mohamed Al Qubaisi, executive director of ADIA’s real estate department, noted that the transaction deepens their longstanding relationship with GLP and supports its next growth phase while scaling exposure to new economy segments.

The investment supports GLP’s diversified global platform. The firm has operations across Brazil, China, Europe, India, Japan, the US, and Vietnam, spanning logistics real estate, data centres and renewables. Moreover, the investments come amid escalating interest in digital infrastructure, particularly data centres, which are seen as pivotal to AI and cloud services growth.

GLP’s momentum is further underlined by recent capital inflows from regional partners. In China, the company secured 2.5 billion yuan from Zhejiang government‑backed investors to boost its data‑centre operations. Earlier in the year, GLP completed the sale of its ex‑China funds management business to Ares Management for US $3.7 billion, in a deal partly financed with cash and equity. The company also retains stakes in those funds and has backed Ares’s first Japanese data‑centre fund, which completed a US $2.4 billion final closing in June.

GLP’s evolution over the past decade provides further context for this development. Founded in 2009 by Ming Z Mei and Jeffrey H Schwartz, the firm originated as Global Logistic Properties. It went public in 2010 in what was at the time Singapore’s largest IPO. It was taken private in 2018, following a leveraged buyout led by a private‑equity consortium. The company has since transformed into a multi‑sector platform across logistics, digital infrastructure and renewable energy.

On the other side, ADIA stands as one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds, managing a diversified global portfolio across asset classes including real estate, private equity and data‑centre platforms. This leap into a direct stake in GLP underscores the fund’s strategy of pursuing active positions in entities driving structural sectoral growth.
