Japan will release an additional 20 days’ worth of oil reserves from May as Tokyo tries to shield domestic fuel supplies from continued disruption in the Middle East and reduce its exposure to shipments that pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told a cabinet meeting on April 10 that the move would come from the public stockpile, adding to emergency releases already under way since mid-March.
The decision marks a further escalation in Japan’s energy contingency response at a time when the Strait of Hormuz remains under severe strain despite a two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran. The waterway is one of the world’s most important oil chokepoints, and its disruption has hit Japan especially hard because the country depends on the Middle East for about 95% of its oil imports. Takaichi’s government has been racing to prevent shortages, stabilise prices and reassure refiners, transport operators and households that fuel will continue to flow.
Tokyo had already moved ahead on March 16 with the release of reserves equivalent to 50 days of consumption, combining privately held stocks with state reserves and supplies jointly held with producing nations. That initial step was announced before a formal coordinated action by the International Energy Agency, underscoring the urgency felt by Japanese officials as tanker traffic through Hormuz became severely constrained. The new plan adds another layer of insurance rather than replacing the earlier programme, signalling that authorities believe the market shock may last longer than first expected.
Officials say Japan still has considerable room to act. As of April 7, the country held reserves covering 228 days, including 143 days in the public stockpile. That buffer gives policymakers flexibility, but it also reflects the scale of the threat they see. Refiners have already been forced to adjust operations as crude availability tightens, and the government is attempting to manage not only total supply but also how fuel is distributed across the country. Concerns have centred on keeping essential sectors supplied first, particularly healthcare, transport, agriculture, fisheries and livestock production.
Japan’s strategy goes beyond drawing down reserves. Takaichi said the government expects that by May more than half of oil imports will be secured through routes that do not involve the Strait of Hormuz. That shift is central to Tokyo’s effort to avoid becoming hostage to a single maritime corridor while conflict risk remains elevated. Officials have not identified every supplier publicly, but the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has indicated that Japan is seeking alternative barrels from a wide range of countries, including Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Nigeria and Angola.
The United States is set to play a larger role in that reshaping of supply. A ministry document cited by Reuters said oil imports from the US in May would be four times higher than a year earlier. Japan imported about 189,000 barrels a day from the US in May last year, equal to roughly 8% of total crude purchases for that month. Tokyo is also drawing on Middle East supplies that can bypass Hormuz, including shipments from Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea outlet at Yanbu and from Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates. Those routes do not eliminate vulnerability, but they reduce reliance on the narrow strait at the centre of the crisis.
Domestic politics and inflation pressures are also shaping the response. Takaichi has paired the reserve releases with fuel price measures meant to keep retail gasoline around a nationwide average of ¥170 a litre, even if crude prices remain elevated. Officials have warned that a prolonged supply shock could otherwise push pump prices much higher and strain households as well as businesses already dealing with cost pressures. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has also flagged the fiscal burden of existing subsidy measures, suggesting that energy security is becoming not only a supply issue but a budgetary one.
Jack Ma-backed Yunfeng Capital and Hillhouse Investment are among investors said to be planning to buy shares in Victory Giant Technology’s Hong Kong share sale, a deal that could raise about $2 billion and add fresh momentum to the city’s revival as a venue for large equity offerings. Bloomberg reported on Friday that the Guangdong-based company could begin taking investor orders as early as Monday, though the proposed allocations and timing were described as private and subject to change.
Victory Giant, formally known as Victory Giant Technology Co., Ltd., is already listed in Shenzhen and filed an application proof for a Hong Kong offering in February. The draft filing makes clear that the process was still incomplete at that stage and that no investment decision should be based on the draft document alone, a reminder that the final terms, investor line-up and valuation could still shift before launch. China’s securities regulator had already given the green light for the offering in early March, according to Bloomberg’s earlier reporting.
The company sits in a part of the technology supply chain that has drawn growing investor attention as spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure accelerates. Victory Giant makes printed circuit boards, including high-layer-count multilayer boards and high-build-up high-density interconnect boards used in AI accelerator cards, AI servers and high-speed networking equipment. In its Hong Kong filing, the company said such products are designed for high-frequency, high-speed and high-stability applications and are used in components including GPU accelerator modules, CPU motherboards and network interface cards for AI servers.
Its own figures point to a sharp improvement in financial performance as demand for those products strengthened. According to the application proof, revenue rose from RMB7.93 billion in 2023 to RMB10.73 billion in 2024. For the nine months to September 30, 2025, profit climbed to RMB3.24 billion from RMB764.6 million a year earlier, while the net profit margin rose to 23.0% from 9.9%. The filing attributes a large part of that jump to stronger demand for high-end HDI products used in AI-related applications, which command higher prices and fatter margins.
That performance helps explain why anchor demand matters. Cornerstone-style support from investors such as Yunfeng and Hillhouse would give the offering greater signalling power at a time when fund managers are trying to separate durable AI-linked manufacturers from companies benefiting only from short-lived enthusiasm. Neither investor had publicly confirmed participation at the time of Bloomberg’s report, so any description of their role remains conditional until final deal documents are published.
Victory Giant’s filing also underlines the industrial logic behind the listing. The company says it plans to use proceeds for capacity expansion, infrastructure enhancement and equipment purchases in Huizhou, Changsha and Yiyang, as well as investment in smart manufacturing. In Huizhou alone, it expects capacity additions for premium high-layer-count multilayer boards and high-build-up HDI products, reflecting management’s bet that demand tied to AI computing, data centres and advanced electronics will stay strong enough to justify further capital expenditure.
Industry data included in the filing suggest the company is positioning itself in one of the faster-growing corners of the electronics market. The application proof says the global PCB market grew to US$75.0 billion in 2024 and could reach US$93.7 billion by 2029. It estimates the PCB segment tied to AI and high-performance computing at US$6.0 billion in 2024, with that figure projected to rise to US$15.0 billion by 2029. The same filing says Victory Giant ranked first globally in the first half of 2025 for high-layer-count multilayer PCBs with 14 layers and above, and also first globally in high-build-up HDI PCB in that period. Those market-share claims are drawn from third-party industry research cited by the company and should be read in that context.
The backdrop in Hong Kong is supportive, though not uncomplicated. Reuters reported in late February that the city had its strongest start to a year since 2021, with IPOs and second listings raising about $5.5 billion in January. By March 18, LSEG data cited by Reuters showed Hong Kong’s IPO market had raised about $11.64 billion in the first quarter, up 385% from a year earlier. At the same time, Reuters also noted in March that worsening geopolitical tensions had begun to weigh on trading debuts, a sign that even a revived market remains vulnerable to shifts in sentiment.

Microsoft has unveiled a $10 billion investment plan for Japan running from 2026 to 2029, marking one of the company’s biggest artificial intelligence commitments in Asia and a major escalation from its earlier pledge in the country. The package, worth about 1.6 trillion yen, is aimed at expanding AI infrastructure, strengthening cyber defence cooperation with Tokyo and widening access to domestic cloud capacity for government agencies and businesses.
The announcement signals how sharply competition for AI infrastructure has intensified across Asia. Microsoft said the programme will focus on adding computing capacity inside Japan at a time when governments and corporations are demanding secure, local processing for sensitive workloads. Brad Smith, Microsoft’s vice-chair and president, disclosed the plan during a visit to Tokyo, where the company also set out training and security goals tied to the investment.
Under the plan, Microsoft intends to train one million engineers and developers by 2030, a figure that underlines the labour challenge facing Japan as it tries to scale AI use across the economy. The company is also expanding cybersecurity collaboration with the Japanese government, including work around threat intelligence and cybercrime prevention. Those elements give the package a dual purpose: commercial expansion for Microsoft and strategic support for a country that has made digital resilience and industrial competitiveness central to policy.
The new commitment builds on a smaller programme announced in April 2024, when Microsoft said it would invest $2.9 billion over two years to expand cloud and AI infrastructure in Japan, while also launching wider digital skilling efforts, opening its first Microsoft Research Asia lab in the country and deepening cooperation on cybersecurity. The latest package therefore appears less like a standalone move than the next stage of a longer campaign to lock in market share and policy relevance in one of Asia’s most advanced economies.
Japan offers Microsoft an attractive mix of high-value enterprise customers, a technologically sophisticated manufacturing base and a government that has been openly supportive of industrial uses for generative AI. Tokyo’s policy stance has increasingly favoured the deployment of advanced digital tools to lift productivity, offset labour shortages and bolster economic security. That political environment has made Japan a focal point for global technology groups seeking not just customers, but durable alignment with state priorities on data sovereignty and national resilience.
Market conditions also help explain the scale of the move. Reuters reported that around one-fifth of working-age people in Japan are now using generative AI tools, showing that adoption has advanced but remains well below leading global levels, leaving substantial room for growth. At the same time, labour projections point to a steep shortage of AI and robotics specialists by 2040, raising the stakes for corporate training programmes and local infrastructure investment. For Microsoft, that creates an opening to sell both computing capacity and the wider ecosystem needed to make AI usable at scale.
Partnerships with local players will be central to execution. Microsoft said it would work with firms including SoftBank and Sakura Internet to expand domestic AI computing capacity and provide more secure local access to Azure services. That matters in Japan, where demand from public institutions and regulated industries often hinges on where data is processed and how operational control is shared. Collaboration with established domestic groups may also help Microsoft navigate competitive pressure from rival cloud providers and home-grown digital infrastructure ambitions.

U. S. Treasuries fell across the curve after President Donald Trump used a televised address to harden his stance on Iran, unsettling investors who had been looking for signs of de-escalation and instead got a warning of heavier military action that sent oil prices sharply higher and revived fears of another inflation pulse through the global economy. The move in government debt reflected a quick reassessment of […]
Arabian Post Staff -Dubai Oil prices leapt on Thursday after President Donald Trump said the United States would keep striking Iran for at least the next two to three weeks, dashing hopes that Washington was preparing to scale back military action and easing concerns in energy markets only briefly. Global energy markets are facing a supply shock more severe than the oil crises of 1973 and 1979 combined with the gas disruption that followed Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, according to International Energy Agency executive director Fatih Birol, who said mounting losses of oil and liquefied natural gas from the Middle East were set to intensify through April. Birol said more than 12 million barrels of […]
KKR is preparing to take Taiyo Holdings private in a deal that values the Japanese electronics materials and pharmaceuticals group at about ¥528.56 billion, marking one of the bigger private equity transactions in Japan this year and signalling renewed appetite for take-private deals built around manufacturing, healthcare and semiconductor-linked supply chains. Taiyo’s board has backed the move, while major shareholders including DIC, Kowa and Oasis Management have agreed to participate in the transaction or related steps, giving KKR support tied to roughly 42.2% of the company’s outstanding shares.
The proposed tender offer price is ¥4,750 a share. That figure carries an unusual wrinkle: Reuters reported it stood 4.7% below Taiyo’s last closing price, reflecting how market speculation had already lifted the stock, while the joint company release framed the offer as carrying a steep premium to unaffected average prices before the bidding process became public and before activist-related filings stirred the shares. The contrast underlines how Japan’s take-private deals are increasingly playing out in markets already primed by rumour, activism and expectations of strategic change.
Taiyo is not a household consumer name, but it sits in businesses that have become more visible to global investors. The group is a leading producer of solder resist and other materials used in printed circuit boards and semiconductor packaging substrates, while also operating a medical and pharmaceutical arm that makes prescription drugs and provides contract development and manufacturing services. In its own long-term planning, Taiyo has pointed to growth opportunities from generative AI, data centres and communications infrastructure on the electronics side, alongside structural reform and expansion in contract manufacturing for pharmaceuticals.
That mix helps explain why KKR sees room for a private-market strategy. Taiyo said privatisation would allow it to pursue long-term investments and quicker decision-making with less pressure from the public market. The company’s “Beyond Imagination 2030” plan targets a rise in net sales to ¥180 billion by fiscal 2031 from ¥119 billion in fiscal 2025, while operating income is targeted to more than double to ¥47 billion from ¥22 billion. Management has also been trying to improve capital efficiency after sustained dialogue with shareholders, including a focus on profitability in the medical and pharmaceuticals unit and a review of portfolio positioning across the group.
For KKR, the Taiyo bid fits a broader pattern in Japan. The firm said it has been investing in the country for two decades and manages more than $20 billion there. Its existing investments span semiconductor equipment, pharmaceuticals, information technology and logistics, sectors where global funds have been seeking companies with specialised technology, export potential or scope for operational overhaul. Taiyo gives KKR exposure to electronics materials tied to advanced manufacturing as well as a pharmaceuticals platform that could benefit from demand for contract manufacturing and stable domestic drug supply.
The shareholder line-up behind the offer is also notable. DIC, Taiyo’s largest shareholder, and Kowa, which is affiliated with the founding family, have agreed to sell through a share consolidation and buyback process after the tender offer is completed. The founding family plans to reinvest in the KKR-managed vehicle that will own Taiyo after privatisation. Oasis Management, long known for active positions in Japan, has separately agreed to tender shares representing about 15.62% of the company. That combination reduces execution risk and suggests the deal has been designed to balance continuity with outside capital and governance pressure.
Still, the transaction comes with questions that investors and analysts will watch closely. A take-private at a headline valuation above ¥500 billion will invite scrutiny over whether minority holders are being offered enough upside after the stock’s sharp re-rating. The tender offer has yet to begin formally and remains subject to customary conditions, including regulatory approvals. Any delays or shifts in market conditions could test sentiment, especially at a time when deal financing and foreign buyouts in Japan are being judged against a higher bar on governance, transparency and shareholder treatment.
Taiyo’s business profile gives the story wider significance than a conventional chemicals buyout. Its electronics arm remains the core earnings driver, but the medical and pharmaceuticals business has been gaining attention as order volumes rise in contract manufacturing and as the group tries to lift margins. Taiyo’s own targets show electronics sales climbing to ¥128 billion by fiscal 2031 and medical and pharmaceuticals sales to ¥43 billion, with the latter expected to deliver a marked improvement in profitability. That combination of steady industrial demand and a healthcare growth angle is the sort of hybrid case private equity firms have been seeking across Japan’s listed mid-cap sector.

In its home market, Tim Ho Wan has strengthened its core Hong Kong footprint, doubling its store network to 10 locations within approximately one year. Recent store openings have delivered attractive payback periods (circa 1.5 years) and profitability, reinforcing confidence in the brand’s unit economics and disciplined growth approach.
Growth has been broad-based across both company-operated and franchise markets. Sales performance strengthened across markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and China, while franchise markets, including the Philippines, Vietnam, and Japan, continue to build momentum, further validating the brand’s strong international resonance and scalability.
The brand also reached an important milestone in its global expansion with the opening of its first company-operated North America store in Irvine, California, marking a significant step in establishing a direct presence in one of the world’s largest consumer markets. This re-entry into North America reflects the transportability of the brand’s operating model and positions Tim How Wan for a new phase of long-term growth and further global brand development.
