Exports of gasoline and diesel from India have climbed to multi-year highs in 2025, pushed by expanded refinery output, elevated ethanol blending, and weakening domestic demand during the monsoon season. Analysts expect gasoil shipments to reach 610,000–630,000 barrels per day, according to Wood Mackenzie, while Kpler forecasts hover nearer 560,000 bpd.

Heightened crude processing capacity has enabled major refiners such as Reliance Industries and Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd to divert more fuel into exports. Gasoline exports are estimated at about 400,000 bpd this year, supported by the country’s adoption of 20 % ethanol blending in petrol—a marked rise from 12 % in 2023.

Much of India’s diesel is now bound for Europe, where supply may tighten later this year due to refinery maintenance across the Middle East and Europe. The shift is occurring as the European Union phases in restrictions on refined petroleum imports derived from Russian crude, which clears the way for alternative sources. In August alone, India’s diesel exports to Europe surged by 137 % year-on-year, reaching 242,000 bpd.

India’s push into export markets is aided by discounts on Russian crude supplied during Western sanctions, allowing refiners to maintain margins even as exports grow. The increase in export volumes comes despite diplomatic criticism from Washington, which questions the use of discounted crude for profit. India asserts that its procurement practices stabilise global fuel markets rather than distort them.

Domestically, the monsoon period has dampened fuel demand, helping free up surplus supply for export. In parallel, Indian refiners have managed fewer unscheduled maintenance shutdowns, keeping plants operating near capacity. Wood Mackenzie anticipates India’s crude processing will increase by 130,000 to 160,000 bpd in 2025, reaching around 5.51 million bpd.

The higher share of ethanol in petrol has been key to redirecting conventional fuel toward exports. As of August, India achieved a 19.8 % ethanol blend—putting the country on track for its 20 % target. To facilitate further expansion of cleaner fuels, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade has also authorised exports of second-generation ethanol, subject to certification and authorisation.

Europe’s transition away from Russian-derived refined products leaves a strategic opening for India. Saudi Arabia’s refined product shipments are projected to dip by about 300,000 bpd in October–November due to maintenance of several Aramco plants, creating additional export opportunities for Indian producers.

Yet the surge is not without complexity. In April 2025, India’s diesel exports hit their lowest point in over a decade, dropping to an estimated 1.15 million metric tons amid refinery maintenance at the Jamnagar complex. That earlier slump underscores the delicate balance between sustaining export momentum and managing domestic operations.

Simultaneously, India is also redirecting surplus rice stocks toward ethanol production to bolster blending targets. The government has allocated 5.2 million metric tons of rice for biofuel conversion—a move that helps ease pressure on grain reserves while reinforcing fuel strategy.

China’s solar manufacturing industry is under pressure as Beijing intensifies efforts to restrain aggressive pricing tactics and eliminate surplus capacity. The National Energy Administration has signalled that firms engaging in destructive price competition will face stricter oversight, while draft regulations threaten shutdowns of plants that fail to comply with energy efficiency standards.

Wang Hongzhi, head of the NEA, published a directive ordering more balanced alignment between supply and demand, with emphasis on improving quality across the solar value chain. His message highlights that continued overcapacity and “cut-throat competition” must be contained to preserve the viability of the sector.

A key focus lies in the polysilicon segment. New standards proposed by China’s Standardization Administration would require factories to meet energy consumption thresholds—6.4 kgce/kg initially, and 5.5 kgce/kg after remediation. Facilities failing to upgrade would be shut. These rules could remove about 16.4 percent of capacity, trimming effective production to roughly 2.4 million metric tons annually.

At the same time, major polysilicon producers are planning capacity cuts via a 50 billion yuan consolidation fund. That plan aims to retire roughly one-third of low-efficiency production and impose output quotas akin to those used by oil producers. The expected cutback would reduce capacity from approximately 3.25 million tons to around 2 million.

Industry ministry meetings with solar firms have escalated in frequency, with Li Lecheng of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reiterating the need to phase out outdated lines, raise product standards, and enforce self-discipline among companies. The government is pushing for cleaner governance, stiffer quality controls, and curbs on unfair price undercutting. Several top-tier firms—LONGi, Trina, JA Solar, GCL, and others—attended these discussions.

Financial pressures on the solar sector have been acute. In 2024, the manufacturing chain posted losses of about US$40 billion. Many firms slashed their workforce by nearly a third. Utilisation rates in polysilicon and module production have hovered near 50 percent, constraining margins. Recent easing of pricing pressures shows polysilicon prices rebounding as the market anticipates tighter supply control.

Emerging leaders in next-generation module technology may gain an edge as the sector readjusts. N-type modules—such as TOPCon and HJT types—are being seen by some manufacturers as instruments to command premium pricing and differentiate from low-cost rivals. Companies that invest early could secure advantages in both domestic and export markets.

A longer-term obstacle is aligning central directives with local compliance. Local governments have historically defended regional solar output through subsidies, land allocation, and lax enforcement. Analysts warn that meeting the central government’s expectations may prove disruptive to local industrial planning. Enforcement is anticipated to ramp over the coming months.

Qatar Investment Authority is injecting US$500 million into Ivanhoe Mines via a private placement that grants the sovereign wealth fund roughly a 4 per cent interest in the Canadian miner. Ivanhoe will issue 57,516,666 common shares at CAD 12 per share, with proceeds earmarked for development of critical mineral projects and general corporate needs.

Ivanhoe Mines operates key assets in southern Africa, notably the Kamoa-Kakula copper complex in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the ultra-high-grade Kipushi zinc-copper-germanium-silver mine also in the DRC, and the Platreef platinum group metals project in South Africa, which is set to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2025. The QIA investment supports work across these operations and Ivanhoe’s exploration licences in the Western Forelands, which cover large prospective areas.

Robert Friedland, Ivanhoe’s Executive Co-Chair, described the deal as a strong endorsement of the company’s ambition to be a leading supplier of metals crucial to the energy transition, advanced infrastructure and technologies including AI and data centres. He expressed that QIA’s vision aligns with Ivanhoe’s long-term strategic investors.

Mohammed Saif Al-Sowaidi, CEO of QIA, said the investment reflects confidence not just in Ivanhoe’s asset portfolio but also in its capacity to sustainably discover, develop and supply critical minerals for global electrification and advanced technologies.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions including approval by the Toronto Stock Exchange. In addition, QIA and Ivanhoe will enter into an investor rights agreement which grants QIA the right to board representation and access to company information if its ownership surpasses 10 per cent, along with anti-dilution rights. Existing major shareholders, CITIC Metal Africa Investments and Zijin Mining Group, retain rights to acquire their pro rata shares at the same CAD 12 price to maintain their ownership levels.

Ivanhoe’s share price was affected by the deal: the CAD 12 issue price is below the closing price of CAD 13.19 prior to the announcement, representing a discount. The investment follows a climate in which sovereign funds and institutional investors are increasingly targeting critical minerals as part of global supply chains for the clean energy transition.

Prosus NV has raised its holding in Urban Company Ltd to 7.35 per cent, after acquiring roughly an additional 4 percentage points by investing about $139 million, ahead of the home services startup’s Initial Public Offering. This move positions Prosus as one of Urban Company’s largest shareholders and signals strong institutional faith in the firm’s prospects.

Urban Company’s IPO drew overwhelming demand — it was subscribed over 103 times — and its shares listed at a premium of about 57.5 per cent over the issue price on the National Stock Exchange, opening at ₹162.25 versus the ₹103 issue price. The listing surged the company’s market valuation to nearly $2.8 billion.

According to Ashutosh Sharma, head of Prosus India Ecosystem, the firm increased its stake during the IPO allotment. Prosus first backed Urban Company in 2021; this latest acquisition underscores its continued appetite for stakes in Indian startups with domestic consumer and service-led business models.

Urban Company, founded in 2014 by Abhiraj Singh Bhal, Varun Khaitan, and Raghav Chandra, operates across home services such as beauty, cleaning, appliance repair and plumbing. It has expanded into over 50 cities in India and also operates in international markets including UAE and Singapore. The company reported strong financial performance in its fiscal year ending 2025, with revenue growth of around 36 per cent year-on-year and its first net profit of approximately ₹239–₹240 crore.

Investor enthusiasm was evident in the IPO process. Qualified Institutional Buyers led the subscription with particularly strong bids. The grey market premium, which reflects expectations ahead of listing, had risen to over 50 per cent above the issue price, signalling investor confidence in an upward listing trajectory.

Prosus’s move comes amid a broader trend of institutional investors increasing their exposure to Indian startups ahead of IPOs, particularly those in consumer-facing, service-oriented sectors. Earlier urban and tech-led listings have attracted robust demand, and IPOs that show solid unit economics—strong margins, revenue growth, steps toward profit—are being favoured by capital.

Urban Company’s stock market debut saw a steep rise: the shares not only opened with a 57.5 per cent premium on NSE, but trading surged further, reflecting both investor optimism and perceived underpricing in its IPO offer.

Prosus, headquartered in the Netherlands and known for its early stake in Tencent Holdings, has invested over $8-9 billion in the Indian startup ecosystem. It has backed firms such as Swiggy, Meesho, and PayU. Its amplified investment in Urban Company exemplifies a strategy of anchoring bets on firms that combine growth potential with improving financial metrics.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi turned 75 today amid widespread greetings and the launch of a two-week “Sewa Pakhwada” campaign aimed at welfare and outreach efforts across India. State and central leaders as well as ordinary citizens extolled his leadership, while a slate of new programs for women, children and tribal communities were rolled out, especially from Dhar in Madhya Pradesh.

President Droupadi Murmu hailed Modi as “an exemplar of hard work” who has inspired the nation to set and pursue large goals. She wished him health and joy, emphasising how his leadership has helped shape India’s progress globally. Union ministers including Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari and BJP president J. P. Nadda echoed these sentiments, pointing to Modi’s role in promoting self-reliance, elevating India’s international stature, and executing reforms across sectors.

The “Sewa Pakhwada” initiative has been structured as a fortnight of activity ending on 2 October, coinciding with the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. Under the campaign, programmes such as health check-ups, cleanliness drives, blood donation camps, environmental awareness efforts, promotion of indigenous products, exhibitions, and sports events will take place. BJP youth wings are staging runs and community events in dozens of cities to mark the milestone.

From his birthplace town of Vadnagar in Gujarat to distant corners of the country, celebrations have taken on local flavour. In Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district, special welfare initiatives for women, children and tribal populations were unveiled. Across India, schools and public spaces have hosted rangoli displays, devotional prayers, and cultural performances. Special Ganga Aarti ceremonies have been organised and major state capitals are seeing visual tributes such as large-scale posters and tricolours.

Political reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with opposition voices largely restrained or offering measured praise. Chief ministers from various states, as well as senior figures within BJP and allies, emphasised continuity of governance and commitment to delivering public services. Some messages focused on Modi’s global diplomatic presence, while others lauded domestic schemes and grassroots infrastructure projects.

Analysts see the birthday observances and accompanying welfare push as both symbolic and strategic. The scale of the celebrations and outreach efforts suggests an aim to reinforce popular support ahead of upcoming elections. The use of service initiatives spans across regions and social groups; the focus on tribal welfare and women’s health is being viewed as an attempt to address longstanding development gaps. Modi’s third consecutive term as Prime Minister has already witnessed significant policy moves in defence, infrastructure, manufacturing, and digital governance, boosting India’s international profile even as challenges such as inflation, unemployment and rural distress persist.

Entering its third year, the event continues to grow, giving Prime members in Singapore early access to savings across thousands of products, from categories such as toys, babies, electronics, and home & kitchen. Customers can get a head start on their holiday shopping with some of Amazon’s best deals of the season, with savings on popular brands such as Nerf, Pigeon, Bose, SMEG and Dyson. SINGAPORE – […]

ReNew Energy Global Plc is negotiating with several international banks to secure a loan of about $815 million aimed at refinancing its debt, according to sources familiar with the matter. The funds would help the renewable energy firm restructure existing liabilities and improve its financial flexibility.

The discussions involve major global lenders, though the identities of those banks have not been confirmed. The loan is expected to offer terms that reflect both ReNew’s large asset base in wind, solar and hydroelectric power, and the current pressure in credit markets driven by rising interest rates.

ReNew, founded by Sumant Sinha with operations largely in India, has been expanding aggressively across clean energy segments. The company has more than 150 projects across ten states and is developing a supply-chain business through its solar cells and modules units. The refinancing exercise appears linked to balancing growth investments while managing existing financial obligations.

Financial analysts see this move as part of ReNew’s broader strategy to optimise its debt servicing costs. Earlier fundraising rounds for ReNew include a sizeable investment by British International Investment into its solar manufacturing arm, which underscores the company’s aim to develop internal manufacturing capabilities. Cost of debt and maturity profiles of its outstanding instruments have been flagged by market watchers as challenges in the current high-rate environment.
