Luxury hotels across Thailand are cutting prices and pivoting towards domestic travellers as geopolitical tensions and security concerns disrupt international tourism flows, weakening one of the country’s most dependable economic pillars.

High-end resorts along the Andaman coast and landmark properties in Bangkok have introduced significant discounts, extended stay packages and exclusive local offers to offset a slowdown in foreign arrivals. Industry executives describe a shift in booking patterns, with cancellations rising in key long-haul markets and advance reservations thinning compared with earlier projections.

Tourism has long been central to Thailand’s economic model, contributing a substantial share of gross domestic product and supporting millions of jobs. The luxury segment, in particular, relies heavily on affluent visitors from Europe, the Middle East, China and North America, many of whom plan trips months in advance. Heightened regional tensions and broader global uncertainties have altered those patterns, prompting travellers to reconsider long-haul leisure plans.

Hotel operators report that destinations such as Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samui—traditionally magnets for premium travellers—have experienced a noticeable drop in occupancy rates at the top end of the market. In Bangkok, riverside hotels and internationally branded properties are also seeing softer demand from overseas guests, especially in the high-spending segments that underpin profitability.

To cushion the impact, hotels have rolled out targeted campaigns aimed at residents and expatriates. Weekend staycation deals, dining credits, spa packages and family-oriented promotions have become more prominent. Some properties are offering discounts of 20 to 40 per cent compared with standard peak-season rates, while others are bundling experiences to maintain revenue per guest despite lower room prices.

Industry analysts say the strategy reflects both necessity and opportunity. While domestic travellers typically spend less than international tourists, their presence can help maintain occupancy levels, keep staff employed and sustain ancillary revenue streams such as food and beverage services. Hotels are also leveraging loyalty programmes and partnerships with local banks and airlines to attract repeat customers.

Executives within major hospitality groups indicate that flexibility has become essential. Pricing is being adjusted more frequently in response to shifting demand signals, and marketing efforts are increasingly focused on short-haul markets that may be less sensitive to geopolitical developments. Regional travellers from Southeast Asia and parts of South Asia are being courted alongside domestic guests.

The slowdown in foreign arrivals is not uniform across all markets. Some segments, including travellers from neighbouring countries, continue to show resilience, though not enough to fully offset declines from traditional long-haul sources. Chinese outbound tourism, a key driver before the pandemic, remains uneven, adding another layer of uncertainty for hotel operators.

Government agencies have sought to reassure visitors by emphasising safety measures and the country’s established tourism infrastructure. Promotional campaigns highlighting cultural attractions, wellness tourism and culinary experiences are being amplified to sustain Thailand’s global appeal. However, industry participants acknowledge that external factors—particularly geopolitical tensions—are largely beyond their control.

Airline capacity and flight connectivity also play a critical role. Any reduction in routes or frequency can quickly translate into fewer arrivals, affecting hotel bookings across the spectrum. Conversely, competitive airfares and improved connectivity could help stimulate demand once conditions stabilise.

Luxury hotel operators are also reassessing cost structures to preserve margins. Energy efficiency initiatives, staffing adjustments and renegotiation of supplier contracts are among the measures being implemented. At the same time, there is caution against excessive discounting that could dilute brand positioning in the long term.

Tourism experts note that Thailand has demonstrated resilience in past crises, including political unrest, natural disasters and global health emergencies. Recovery patterns have often been swift once external conditions improve, supported by strong brand recognition and diversified tourism offerings.

The current environment, however, underscores the vulnerability of high-end hospitality to global shocks. Dependence on international travellers exposes the sector to sudden demand fluctuations, prompting calls for a more balanced mix of domestic and regional tourism.

Hotel groups are increasingly investing in digital marketing and data analytics to better understand changing consumer behaviour. Personalised offers, dynamic pricing models and targeted advertising campaigns are being used to capture demand in a more competitive landscape.

Apple chief executive Tim Cook has publicly praised the company’s Chinese developers and manufacturing partners, signalling a measured response as regulatory scrutiny and geopolitical tensions weigh on one of its most critical markets.

Speaking during engagements in China, Cook highlighted the “extraordinary” role of local developers in Apple’s ecosystem and emphasised the company’s long-standing collaboration with suppliers and technology partners across the country. The remarks came at a time when Beijing has intensified oversight of foreign technology firms and promoted domestic alternatives, raising questions about the operating environment for global companies.

China remains central to Apple’s business, both as a manufacturing hub and as one of its largest consumer markets. A substantial share of the company’s iPhones, iPads and Mac computers are assembled through an intricate network of suppliers led by firms such as Foxconn and Pegatron. At the same time, the country contributes a significant portion of Apple’s revenue, with urban consumers forming a key segment for premium smartphone sales.

Cook’s comments appeared calibrated to reinforce Apple’s commitment to China while avoiding direct reference to the regulatory challenges. Officials in Beijing have tightened rules governing data security, app distribution and foreign technology usage within state-affiliated institutions. These measures have created uncertainty for international companies, particularly those reliant on digital services and hardware integration.

Apple has faced periodic restrictions affecting its ecosystem, including limitations on certain apps and services. Reports of curbs on iPhone use in government-linked workplaces have added to concerns about demand stability, although the company has not publicly confirmed the extent of such measures. Analysts note that even incremental policy shifts can have a disproportionate impact given Apple’s scale in the market.

Cook’s outreach to developers underscores another strategic priority. China hosts one of the largest communities of iOS app creators, contributing to the global App Store economy. By highlighting their role, Apple is reinforcing the narrative that its platform supports local innovation and entrepreneurship, a message aligned with Beijing’s broader push for technological self-reliance.

At the same time, Apple has been diversifying parts of its supply chain beyond China, expanding production in countries such as India and Vietnam. This shift reflects lessons drawn from pandemic-related disruptions and escalating trade tensions between Washington and Beijing. However, industry experts caution that replicating China’s manufacturing ecosystem elsewhere remains a complex and long-term undertaking, given its scale, skilled workforce and logistics infrastructure.

Market dynamics within China are also evolving rapidly. Domestic smartphone brands, including Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo, have intensified competition, particularly in the high-end segment where Apple has traditionally maintained strong margins. Huawei’s resurgence, supported by advances in semiconductor capability despite earlier sanctions, has altered the competitive landscape and placed additional pressure on foreign players.

Cook’s remarks can be seen as part of a broader effort to sustain goodwill with Chinese authorities and stakeholders while navigating these shifts. Maintaining strong relationships with local partners is essential not only for production continuity but also for regulatory compliance and market access.

Investors are closely monitoring Apple’s positioning in China, viewing it as a bellwether for broader trends affecting multinational technology firms. Any prolonged slowdown in demand or disruption in supply chains could have implications for global revenue and earnings forecasts. At the same time, Apple’s brand strength and ecosystem integration continue to provide a degree of resilience, particularly among affluent consumers.

Government policy remains a critical variable. Beijing has signalled support for domestic technology champions while also seeking to attract foreign investment, creating a dual-track approach that can be difficult for companies to interpret. For Apple, balancing these competing dynamics requires careful messaging and operational flexibility.

Pressure is mounting on the UK government to tighten import rules that domestic retailers say are distorting competition, as calls grow to align with measures already being advanced in the United States and European Union targeting low-cost e-commerce shipments. Industry groups representing high street chains and independent businesses have urged ministers to reconsider the “de minimis” threshold that allows low-value goods entering the country to avoid customs […]

Cushman & Wakefield Interpretation Report Highlights Eight Impact Areas for Real Estate Market

HONG KONG SAR – Media OutReach Newswire – 20 March 2026 – Global real estate services firm Cushman & Wakefield has released its China’s Two Sessions 2026: Interpreting the Government Work Report publication. Against a backdrop of increasingly complex domestic and international conditions, the 2026 government work report outlines more flexible and adaptive targets for national economic development. These policy directions will have a profound influence on the real estate sector. The market’s transition from focusing on incremental expansion to revitalizing and optimizing existing assets — combined with the accelerating integration of artificial intelligence across industries —will reshape market structures, redefine asset values, and reconfigure spatial development patterns in far-reaching ways.

Macroeconomic Stability Strengthens the Foundation for Commercial Real Estate Stabilization

China’s core economic targets for 2026 are clearly defined, with GDP growth set between 4.5%–5%, balancing the dual objectives of stabilizing growth and adjusting structure. This forms a strong macro foundation for the stabilization and gradual recovery of the commercial real estate sector. Between 2024 and 2025, GDP growth remained steady at around 5.0%. For 2026, the fiscal deficit ratio is maintained at a relatively high 4.0%, with RMB4.4 trillion in local special‑purpose bonds. The quota for ultra‑long‑term special treasury bonds is further expanded to RMB1.3 trillion. Coordinated fiscal and monetary policies will continue to support leasing demand recovery and improved business sentiment in the commercial property market.

Accelerated Industry Transformation Sees Quality Enhancement of Existing Assets Become the Core Theme

The report emphasizes a three‑pronged approach of “city‑specific policies to control new supply, reduce inventory, and improve quality”, while encouraging diverse channels to revitalize existing housing stock and advancing the construction of “good homes.” This marks an accelerated shift from incremental expansion to quality enhancement of existing assets. In 2024, China’s real estate value‑added as a proportion of GDP was just 6.3%, far below the 12.56% average of developed economies. This reflects a structural imbalance characterized by heavy investment in development and insufficient focus on services and leasing. The ongoing transition will make asset management, property services, and leasing operations increasingly central to asset valuation.

Consumption‑Driven Momentum Creates a New Growth Window for Retail Properties

Consumption‑boosting policies are injecting new vitality into the retail property market. The government work report allocates RMB250 billion of ultra‑long‑term special treasury bonds to support product upgrades and replacement, complemented by RMB100 billion in coordinated fiscal‑financial funds — creating a RMB350 billion consumption stimulus package. In 2025, China’s total retail sales of consumer goods exceeded RMB50 trillion, with per‑capita GDP reaching USD13,953, signaling a critical inflection point where service‑oriented consumption accelerates. With services currently accounting for just 46.1% of consumption, there remains significant room for growth. Policies promoting “high‑quality service consumption” and “new consumption scenarios,” combined with the promotion of staggered school holidays in spring and autumn, will create opportunities for high‑quality shopping centers focused on experiential and social retail formats.

AI‑Powered Intelligent Economy Drives an Upgrade in Office Market Demand

The rapid evolution of the intelligent economy is reshaping office market demand. The work report calls for expansion of “AI+,” wider deployment of intelligent agents, and accelerated development of large‑scale computing clusters, indicating the transition of AI into commercialized and scaled applications. In 2025, China’s core digital economy industries accounted for more than 10.5% of GDP, with the target set at 12.5% during the 15th Five‑Year Plan. AI‑related companies are expected to become key new leasing drivers in 2026. This will also stimulate a fresh investment cycle for data centers and industrial parks, with core computing hub cities — in the Beijing‑Tianjin‑Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta, and the Guangdong‑Hong Kong‑Macao Greater Bay Area — set to benefit first.

Capital Market Reforms Expand, Enabling a Full “Investment–Financing–Management–Exit” Cycle for Commercial Real Estate

Capital market reforms continue to support expansion in commercial real estate investment. The work report calls for deepened reform of comprehensive investment and financing mechanisms, expanded exit channels for private equity and venture capital, and accelerated growth of the public REITs market. By 2025, China’s public REITs issuance exceeded RMB210 billion, making it the largest REITs market in Asia. In 2026, commercial public REITs enter their first year of development, with pilots extended to hotels and commercial offices. This establishes a “dual‑engine” landscape of “infrastructure + commercial real estate” and enables a more complete investment‑financing‑management‑exit cycle

Further Opening‑Up Boosts Cross‑Border Logistics and Foreign Investment Demand

China’s opening‑up objectives in 2026 feature two core characteristics: expanding services sector openness to attract foreign investment, and promoting standardized, high‑quality development of cross‑border e‑commerce. In 2025, China’s cross‑border e‑commerce imports and exports totaled RMB2.75 trillion, with growth outpacing overall trade for the fourth consecutive year. The sector’s demand for high‑specification warehouses — characterized by high density and rapid turnover —continues to rise. Cushman & Wakefield data shows that the warehouse market is experiencing volume growth alongside price adjustment, with notable regional differences. As cross‑border e‑commerce becomes more regulated, and cold‑chain logistics demand continues to expand, green‑certified, intelligent high‑spec warehouses are expected to gain a competitive advantage.

Advancement of New Urbanization Brings Opportunities for Urban Clusters and Urban Renewal

A notable highlight among 2026 urbanization policies is the first‑ever proposal to build “innovation‑driven industrial communities and business communities.” This concept breaks the traditional boundary between industrial parks and business districts, fostering integrated complexes that combine office, commercial, and residential functions. The report also supports the development of world‑class city clusters in the Beijing‑Tianjin‑Hebei region, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Greater Bay Area, while enhancing the dual‑city Chengdu‑Chongqing Economic Circle and accelerating growth in the middle‑Yangtze city cluster — further intensifying regional differentiation in the commercial property market. Urban renewal and revitalization of existing stock assets are core pillars of the current urbanization strategy. Policies promoting the reuse of existing land and idle buildings align closely with efforts to revitalize existing housing stock. For owners and operators of prime urban assets, regeneration projects offer strategic opportunities for repositioning and value enhancement.

Green Transformation Prompts Sustainability Certifications to Become a Key Competitive Advantage

The work report dedicates a standalone section to the green transition, announcing dual controls on total carbon emissions and intensity, as well as new policy tools such as zero‑carbon parks and a national low‑carbon transition fund. In 2025, China’s national carbon market saw 235 million tons of allowances traded, with transaction value reaching RMB14.63 billion, up approximately 24% year‑on‑year. Carbon costs have become an increasingly important factor in corporate leasing and location decisions. With 97.9% of newly built urban buildings in 2024 meeting green standards, green retrofits of existing buildings are gaining momentum. Commercial properties certified under LEED, WELL, and China’s Green Building Label standard enjoy notable advantages in rental premiums and tenant attraction.

Sabrina Wei, Chief Policy Analyst and Head of Research, North China, Cushman & Wakefield, said, “The 2026 government work report outlines a clear development vision for commercial real estate characterized by macroeconomic stability, targeted policies, and structural transformation. A GDP growth rate of 4.5%-5% will provide market stability, a RMB350 billion consumption stimulus will activate demand for retail properties, “AI+” will reshape the office market; capital market reforms and public REITs will enable a full “Investment–Financing–Management–Exit” cycle, urban renewal will unlock values of existing assets, and green certification will define new competitiveness for the industry. As the real estate industry transitions from a construction‑focused model to one centered on operations and services, institutions with strong capabilities in asset management and high‑quality operational service delivery will be best positioned to capture the emerging opportunities of this transformative new cycle.”

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Secretary for Development, Ms Bernadette Linn, said that the Han and Tang dynasties were both golden eras in Chinese history, leaving behind a wealth of important historical legacies for the Chinese nation. Following the success of the “Tang Vogue Beyond the Horizons: A Golden Era of Multicultural Integration and Openness” exhibition jointly organised by the DEVB and the NCHA last year, both parties collaborated again to present a large-scale Han dynasty-themed artefact exhibition this year. She eagerly anticipates that through these precious artefacts, members of the public and tourists will learn more about the glorious history of the Han dynasty and appreciate the remarkable virtues of traditional Chinese culture. They will also discover a fresh perspective through the narratives conveyed by the artefacts from Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland.

Other officiating guests at the opening ceremony of the exhibition were the Director of Art Exhibitions China, Mr Tan Ping; the Second-level Inspector of the Department of Publicity, Cultural and Sports Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr Chen Xinyu; the Chairman of the Antiquities Advisory Board, Professor Desmond Hui; and the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Built Heritage Conservation, Professor Douglas So.

The exhibition is presented in six thematic sections, covering political system, economic development, culture and beliefs, scientific and technological development, social life and external exchanges. It features 252 pieces/sets of invaluable exhibits. Among them, 203 pieces/sets, including 40 grade-one cultural relics, come from 29 museums and cultural institutions in 14 provinces and autonomous regions on the Chinese Mainland, and most of them are being shown in Hong Kong for the first time. The remaining 49 pieces/sets are significant archaeological finds dating to the Han period unearthed in Hong Kong, painstakingly selected by the Antiquities and Monuments Office of the DEVB.

The star exhibits from the Chinese Mainland highlight the Han precious bronze horse-leading figurine and bronze horse; an eaves end tile with Chinese characters Han Bing Tian Xia (Han unifies the realm); a seven-storey painted pottery granary house with linked pavilion; the Yi Li (Etiquette and rites) wooden slips, a bronze fang vessel of Inner Treasury of Zhongshan, a gold linzhi hoof, the silk letter from Yuan to Zifang and arithmetical slips unearthed at the Xuanquan relay station site in Dunhuang; a silk manuscript of Yinyang Wuxing (Yinyang and the Five Elements) Article B; a silk padded robe with Chang Shou (longevity) embroidery on a crimson purple juan (plain weave silk) ground; gloves with lozenge pattern; padded socks; and a lacquered wooden plate with leopard cat motif and Chinese characters Jun Xing Shi (food for the honoured guest) and a silver box with garlic pattern. Other exhibits cover a variety of categories, ranging from Han bamboo slips, coins, bronze vessels, clothes and ornaments to pottery figurines, pottery houses and agricultural tools, which present the daily lives of various social strata in the Han period.

The key exhibits unearthed in Hong Kong include a pottery house unearthed at Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb, as well as the Han period artefacts excavated at local significant archaeological sites such as Tung Wan Tsai in Ma Wan, So Kwun Wat in Tuen Mun and Kau Sai Chau in Sai Kung, covering Wuzhu bronze coins, a textile fragment, a stone seal, a bronze ear-cup, jade slotted rings and glass beads. These relics reflect that the Han culture had long been rooted in Hong Kong, and showcase the city’s connection with the country, the pluralistic nature of the Chinese culture and Hong Kong’s links with the early Maritime Silk Road trade.

Operational Summary

In 2025, the Group remained anchored in its “Single Brand, Multi-categories, Diversified Channels” strategy, advancing development through product upgrades, channel optimisation, and brand marketing.

The Group focused on six core categories—running, basketball, training, badminton, table tennis and sports casual—while actively pursuing opportunities in emerging fields and exploring new sports subcategories, such as outdoor, tennis and pickleball. During the year, the Group continued to upgrade its products through technological innovation and enhance the deployment of professional sports resources, guided by three key pillars: reinforcing a professional sports mindset, showcasing sports-fashion aesthetics, and honouring Chinese cultural heritage. In addition, it worked proactively to strengthen brand influence and increase brand recognition and visibility through diversified, and comprehensive marketing campaigns.

As the official partner of the Chinese Olympic Committee, the Group leveraged its deep expertise and strong professional sports credibility to blend sportsmanship with cutting-edge technology and Eastern aesthetics—all under the narrative theme “China’s Glory, Together with LI-NING.” During the year, it opened the world’s first LI-NING “Loong Store” and launched the “Glory Gold Label” product series, transforming exclusive, top-tier scarce sports resources into a driving force for brand reputation and market recognition, continuously strengthening consumers’ perception of LI-NING’s professional capabilities and product reliability.

In terms of channel development, the Group continued to advance a multi-dimensional channel network layout to expand market coverage while enhancing operational efficiency. In high-end markets, the Group deepened synergistic collaborations with top-tier commercial complexes and leading outlet malls, jointly promoting the planning and implementation of innovative stores. During the year, the Group successfully launched an independent outdoor store “COUNTERFLOW”, marking an important milestone for the brand’s official entry into the outdoor segment. The Group actively carried out cross-industry collaborations, partnering with top IPs embodying Chinese cultural heritage such as the Palace Museum, and launched marketing campaigns by collaborating with channel partners through diverse initiatives, effectively improving brand reach and conversion. In terms of efficiency enhancement, the Group continued to optimize the channel structure and improved rental structures and cooperation models, enhancing overall channel health and operational sustainability through a series of strategic optimization measures. As of 31 December 2025, the LI-NING brand (including LI-NING Core Brand and LI-NING YOUNG) operated a total of 7,609 conventional stores, flagship stores, China LI-NING stores, factory outlets, and multi-brand stores, representing a net increase of 24 POS compared with 31 December 2024.

In terms of retail operations, the Group built a highly profitable, efficient, and replicable single-store operating model. In high-level markets, targeted brand strategies were implemented across key regions, strengthening brand image and improving product operation efficiency through optimised channel structure, store product mix, and shopping experience. The Group established a distribution management model to improve operational efficiency and sustainable development capabilities of the distribution system. In addition, the Group strengthened the efficient coordination between retail outlets and the logistics system. Through refined planning systems, flexible supply chain construction and digital support, channel inventory turnover and full lifecycle product management were realised, thereby comprehensively improving operational quality and efficiency.

In terms of e-commerce operations, the Group made precise deployments that effectively enhanced consumer awareness and market share during major e-commerce campaigns such as Tmall Celebration Day and Tmall Super Product Day. During the year, core IP products such as “Zhui Feng”, “DLO”, “ULTRALIGHT” and “LI REN” delivered outstanding performance, successfully penetrating multiple consumer segments including Gen Z, professional sports and trendy fashion, ranking highly in both sales and reputation across segmented markets. By leveraging top athletes, celebrities, trending events and channel resources, the Group not only enhanced product exposure and achieved traffic acquisition and promotional sales conversion, helping inventory optimisation, but also supported offline business and drove overall revenue growth.

In terms of supply chain, the Group continuously optimised the supplier matrix, aligning high-quality supplier resources for high-end sports, outdoor, premium and sponsored product lines. Meanwhile, the Group aligned with its major product plan by adopting segmented production planning and data-driven management to achieve high-level coordination among product planning, supply chain, logistics, and retail outlets. To improve operational efficiency, the Group adopted multiple measures such as integration of fabric resources, optimization of process structures, large-scale procurement of materials and staggered production scheduling, further improving the cost structure, while enhancing production efficiency. In addition, the Group continued to integrate sustainable development into supply chain management and promoted green products, with the proportion of eco-friendly products exceeding annual targets during the year.

In terms of logistics, the Group launched a channel logistics project to connect the order system with logistics operations, improving product circulation efficiency and fulfilment timeliness. On the digital front, the Group introduced a warehouse coordination system and adopted SKU-level refined management. In terms of automation, automated equipment was introduced into various warehouses, enabling multi-scenario coverage and data visualization management. In December 2025, the East China and North China warehouses took the lead in adopting RFID full-process warehouse management, achieving full-process traceability of logistics data, greatly strengthening inventory management precision, and deployment across all warehouses is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026 to continuously drive cost reduction and efficiency improvement.

In terms of its kidswear business, LI-NING YOUNG continued to focus on professional sports and children’s developmental needs, advancing product optimization and exclusive IP creation. In terms of channel strategy, the Group continued to strengthen outlet channel development, improve single-store efficiency and optimize overall channel structure while accelerating its e-commerce deployment. LI-NING YOUNG maintained a coordinated development of wholesale and direct retail. Through refined management and strategic layout, both scale and quality were improved. In terms of marketing, LI-NING YOUNG centred its efforts around three core pillars “Event Cooperation + User Stories + IP Collaboration” to build professional recognition and accumulate its user foundation, successfully expanding its influence among youth and family demographics. An industry forum was held to explore the new-era development of film-game integration.

Distinguished guests attended the conference, including Cloud Zhang, Head of ByteDance’s Game Business and CEO of MOONTON Games; Yaguang Ma, also known as Link Ma, Head of MOONTON Games’ Lighthouse Studio; renowned screenwriter Ran Ping; celebrated author Jiang Nan; acclaimed animation director Shen Youbafang; Wang Shanshan (Film and Television Director of Science Fiction World); as well as leaders from the National Radio and Television Administration; the Hong Kong Trade Development Council; numerous media representatives; and industry peers.

Founded in 2014, MOONTON Games has crafted a portfolio of classic game IPs loved by gamers worldwide. Its debut at Hong Kong FILMART marks the launch of MOONTON Games’ global incubation journey for premium IPs with a brand-new vision, completing a cross-dimensional creative leap from a digital game kingdom to a cinematic light and shadow realm, and empowering Chinese culture-rooted original content to shine on the international stage. MOONTON Games’ Lighthouse Studio, the core vehicle for its film-game IP development, made its official debut at the conference, and its unwavering commitment to long-termist creative philosophy has become the cornerstone of Moonton’s film-game integration layout. The three distinctive original IPs form MOONTON Games’ first film-game IP matrix; all anchored in high-quality content, they pose profound emotional inquiries around What it means to be human, what it means to live, with unique themes and expressive formats.

You Ming Zhi: Rooted in Chinese Folk Customs, Forging a Benchmark for Eastern Fantasy Theatrical Animated Films

As MOONTON Games’ maiden cross-border film and television project, the Eastern fantasy IP You Ming Zhi—deeply rooted in Chinese folk culture—officially kicked off at the conference. The IP builds a distinctive worldview where the world is governed by animal Spirits of Light, and humans embark on a quest to uncover their own history and the meaning of survival. Breaking free from the clichés of traditional immortal and chivalric fantasy, it returns to a narrative core rooted in mortal life and journey experiences. The growth story of protagonist Zhou Chu mirrors the self-discovery and identity exploration of contemporary young people, embodying both profound Chinese cultural heritage and universal emotional resonance.

The IP’s first concept short film made a stunning debut at the conference. Wanzhou Yu, the IP producer, shared that creative inspiration stemmed from personal emotional resonance, aiming to create a humanistic Eastern fantasy work where the protagonist achieves inner growth through witnessing rather than conquering. Cloud stated that this IP was chosen as the starting point of MOONTON Games’ cross-border endeavor for its compelling narrative rooted in Chinese folk customs that transcends media boundaries; it reflectsand MOONTON Games’ aspirations to set an aesthetic and narrative benchmark for it with the ceremonial essence of film. Yaguang Ma highlighted the IP’s pure creative team, original worldview and systematic aesthetic system, believing it to be an IP seed with sustainable growth potential for a decade. A landmark announcement was made: national first-class screenwriter Ran Ping officially joined the project as the animated film’s screenwriter. Ran Ping noted that the IP’s allure lies in exploring profound propositions of civilization, loneliness and coexistence through a fantasy lens, integrating the traditional heritage of ancient supernatural tales with modern narrative consciousness, and a great fantasy work ultimately reflects reality. The MOONTON Games team presented Ran Ping with a framed original art poster of the IP, marking his official joining in a highly ceremonial way.

Cetus: Debut of a Dieselpunk Sci-Fi IP, Launching a Global Co-creation Plan

Following You Ming Zhi, MOONTON Games released the high-concept sci-fi IP Cetus, with the first concept short film of its dieselpunk post-apocalyptic adventure animated series also unveiled at the event. The IP constructs a post-apocalyptic world shrouded in a sea of clouds, where humans have built a unique civilization based on whaling in an isolated island setting, and cling to hope and resolve amid ruins and steel.

Cetus boasts celebrated author, Jiang Nan, as co-creator and acclaimed sci-fi animation director, Shen Youbafang, as director—two core creative forces with profound expertise in building grand worldviews and crafting sci-fi animations. Yaguang Ma commented that Jiang Nan has endowed Cetus with a profound textual foundation and epic grandeur, while Shen Youbafang masterfully captures and presents the distinctive texture of this sea of clouds world to audiences. Jiang Nan explained that the core of Cetus is to depict the essence of humanity in desperate situations: even if only one tower remains in the world, there will still be stories, warmth, and dignity. Shen Youbafang frankly shared that the challenge and joy of creation both lie in building a dieselpunk visual system that blends industrial ruggedness with the warmth of life, making every gear and rust mark an integral part of the narrative. Moonton also announced the official launch of the Cetus Global Co-creation Plan at the conference, opening up the IP’s worldview setting to global sci-fi writers, illustrators, animators and game designers, and inviting creators worldwide to jointly build this magnificent sea of clouds universe. The plan is jointly promoted by MOONTON Games and Science Fiction World, the benchmark platform for Chinese sci-fi literature. Cloud, Wang Shanshan and three other distinguished guests launched the plan with a jigsaw puzzle ceremony, marking Cetus as the first Chinese dieselpunk sci-fi IP nurtured by global creators.

Project: Lovania: A Cozy Game Surprise Debuts, Creating a Spiritual Haven

As a delightful surprise at the conference, MOONTON Games launched the original cozy game, Project: Lovania, whose promotional short film brought a warm and heartfelt experience to the audience. The game builds a fairy-tale wonderland named the Hometown Never Forgotten, where players take on the role of a little puppet and embark on a magical adventure following a long-eared star. In the game, players can build exclusive homes, customize their avatars, and pursue the starlight and the moon hidden in fascinating stories. In an era driven by efficiency, Project: Lovaniacenters on the core of healing, serving as a warm emotional complement to MOONTON Games’ IP matrix and adding greater diversity to the company’s film-game IP layout.

On behalf of the studio, Yaguang Ma released MOONTON Games’ core strategy for film-game integration, stating that the establishment of Lighthouse Studio stems from MOONTON Games’s persistent commitment to long-termist content creation. Each IP is enabled to naturally evolve into diverse formats including games, films and animations, based on a complete worldview and a profound emotional core. Cloud emphasized that MOONTON Games has always believed that a good story transcends media and time, and the core of film-game integration is to take high-quality original content as the foundation, allowing IPs to realize value amplification and enduring vitality across different media. The three IPs released at the event represent the first implementation of this core strategy, and Moonton will continue to deepen its focus on original content creation, fueling the incubation and growth of more film-game IPs in the future.

After the IP release session, MOONTON Games hosted an industry forum themed What is the Decisive Factor for the Future of IP-Based Film-Game Integration, moderated by Li Xingwen, a famous cultural critic and Chief Editor of Film and Television Critic. Cloud, Ran Ping, Jiang Nan, and Huang Haibo, Director of Phoenix TV Movie Channel, engaged in an in-depth discussion from diverse professional perspectives.

The forum delved into core topics including the key factors for translating film-game integration concepts into practical execution, the essential traits of IPs with sustainable cross-media vitality, the creative differences between animation and traditional film and television production, the creative adaptation of literary IPs for film and game cross-border development, the new forces urgently needed in the film and television industry, as well as the opportunities and challenges for game enterprises venturing into the film and television sector. Combining their rich practical experience and insightful industry observations, the guests offered multi-dimensional insights and ideas for the industrial development of film-game integration, helping the on-site audience gain a clearer and more in-depth understanding of its future development trends.

MOONTON Games’ film-game IP launch conference at Hong Kong FILMART marks the official launch of the company’s global film-game IP layout, emerging as a pivotal practice for game enterprises in cross-border film-game integration. From deepening its roots in the game industry to incubating film-game IPs, MOONTON Games takes these three original IPs as its starting point, integrating the essence of Chinese culture with modern creative expression. With its long-termist creative philosophy and open co-creation operation model, Moonton sets a new paradigm for the development of the global film-game integration industry. As the conference theme From Spark to Spotlight implies, this launch is not the end of MOONTON Games’ cross-border film and game journey, but the beginning of a new chapter. In the future, Moonton’s Lighthouse Studio will continue to polish high-quality original content, drive the in-depth integration and global development of film-game IPs, and let Chinese original film-game IPs shine brightly on the world stage.

China is preparing to draw on its extensive commercial crude stockpiles as instability linked to Iran threatens to tighten global supply, signalling a shift in how the world’s largest oil importer manages energy security under geopolitical strain.

Energy consultancy FGE NexantECA indicates that Beijing is nearing a decision to utilise privately held and state-influenced reserves to cushion domestic markets against potential disruptions from escalating conflict in the Middle East. The move reflects growing concern that sustained tensions involving Iran could constrain exports through critical shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint for a significant share of global oil flows.

China has accumulated vast inventories over the past decade, combining strategic petroleum reserves with commercial storage held by state-owned refiners and independent operators. Analysts estimate that total holdings run into hundreds of millions of barrels, giving authorities a substantial buffer to stabilise supply without immediately increasing imports at elevated prices.

The prospect of tapping these reserves comes as benchmark crude prices show heightened volatility, driven by fears of supply interruptions and insurance risks for tankers navigating Gulf waters. Traders have been pricing in the possibility of reduced Iranian exports, either through direct disruption or tighter enforcement of sanctions amid shifting geopolitical alignments.

Officials in Beijing have not publicly confirmed any imminent release, but market signals suggest preparatory steps are under way. Refining margins in Asia have narrowed, while import patterns indicate a degree of caution, with some buyers delaying cargoes or seeking alternative suppliers outside the Middle East. The strategic calculus appears focused on avoiding panic buying that could exacerbate price spikes.

China’s approach differs from coordinated releases led by the International Energy Agency, which typically involve government-controlled reserves. Instead, the country has increasingly relied on a hybrid system where commercial inventories can be mobilised through administrative guidance. This model allows for flexibility while maintaining a degree of opacity, limiting the market impact of official announcements.

Industry experts note that the scale of China’s stockpiles gives it a unique capacity to influence regional demand dynamics. A measured release could dampen immediate import requirements, easing pressure on global benchmarks. At the same time, sustained withdrawals would need to be balanced against the need to rebuild inventories, particularly if geopolitical risks persist.

The Iran factor remains central to the outlook. Despite sanctions, China has continued to import significant volumes of Iranian crude, often through indirect channels. Any escalation that disrupts these flows would force refiners to seek replacements from other producers, including Russia, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, potentially reshaping trade patterns across Asia.

Shipping constraints add another layer of complexity. Insurers have raised premiums for vessels operating in high-risk zones, while some operators are reconsidering routes to minimise exposure. These developments could tighten effective supply even if production levels remain unchanged, reinforcing the rationale for drawing on stored barrels.

Domestic considerations also play a role. China’s economic recovery has been uneven, with industrial activity and transport demand fluctuating. Authorities are keen to prevent energy costs from becoming a drag on growth, particularly as policymakers navigate broader challenges in the property sector and export markets. Using reserves offers a tool to smooth price shocks without resorting to aggressive monetary or fiscal measures.

The move aligns with a broader trend among major economies to reassess energy security strategies in an era of heightened geopolitical risk. Strategic stockpiles, once seen primarily as emergency buffers, are increasingly being deployed as active instruments of market management. China’s large-scale storage capacity positions it at the forefront of this shift.

Market participants are closely watching for signs of implementation. A sustained drawdown could influence price expectations, especially if combined with policy signals discouraging speculative buying. Conversely, a limited or symbolic release may have only a modest effect, serving more as a reassurance to domestic consumers than a decisive intervention.

Producers in the Middle East are also monitoring developments. Any reduction in Chinese import demand could affect export volumes and pricing strategies, particularly for grades competing directly with Iranian crude. At the same time, alternative suppliers may see opportunities to capture market share if disruptions intensify.
