A 25-basis-point reduction in the policy repo rate has set the stage for a notable shift in housing sentiment as the year draws to a close, giving the real estate sector a stronger footing after months of price escalation across major urban centres. Market participants described the cut as a timely boost for homebuyers facing rising borrowing costs and double-digit appreciation in property values through 2025, with many developers expecting the decision to influence purchase behaviour almost immediately.

The RBI move lifts realty outlook theme echoed through the sector as developers, housing finance executives and market analysts assessed the implications of lower lending rates on affordability and sales velocity. The cut follows earlier easing phases this year, forming a broader cycle aimed at supporting domestic demand while keeping inflation within the central bank’s comfort range. Housing markets have been particularly sensitive to borrowing costs, and the value proposition for aspiring homebuyers had tightened as average prices climbed around 10% across the seven largest cities, according to widely tracked industry assessments.

The central expectation among market analysts is that the rate cut could ease pressure on households evaluating home purchases in the affordable and mid-income categories. These segments have shown persistent demand through the year, supported by rising urban employment and continuing interest from younger households. Yet higher prices and limited correction in construction costs have constrained affordability. A lower repo rate opens the possibility of more competitive home loan pricing once lenders adjust their marginal cost of funds-based lending rates and benchmark-linked rates.

Banks are now under scrutiny for the pace at which they transmit the reduction to borrowers. Transmission has varied across lenders in earlier cycles, with some responding quickly and others adjusting rates more cautiously, depending on liquidity conditions and deposit costs. Senior executives in the mortgage market indicated that lending rate revisions are under active consideration and that competitive pressure would likely encourage faster alignment. A prompt pass-through is expected to be a decisive factor in determining whether the anticipated surge in sales materialises through the first quarter of 2026.

Developers are preparing for an uptick in enquiries, particularly from buyers who had deferred decisions amid upward price trends. Several large developers noted that ready-to-move inventory in key metros has been absorbed at an accelerated pace this year, leaving new launches in the mid-income category positioned to capture renewed interest. Many builders believe that households that had been undecided due to higher equated monthly instalments would reassess their position once banks adjust retail lending rates, potentially adding momentum to year-end bookings.

Luxury housing, which has played an outsized role in supporting revenue growth in the sector this year, is expected to maintain its strong performance into 2026. This segment has been less affected by interest rate movements, relying instead on wealth-driven demand and portfolio diversification among high-net-worth buyers. Developers pointed to sustained traction in high-value projects across major metros, supported by resilient stock market gains and stronger capital inflows into premium residential assets.

The affordability challenge, however, remains significant for many households despite the policy easing. Construction input costs have risen steadily over the year, and land prices in established urban clusters show no sign of correction. These factors have been passed on to consumers, compressing the share of buyers in the lower and mid-income categories who are able to meet both down-payment requirements and monthly repayment thresholds. The rate cut eases the burden but does not eliminate structural pressures, prompting some market economists to emphasise the need for calibrated price discipline and wider supply in budget-friendly categories.

Housing finance companies have also highlighted the potential for refinancing activity as borrowers explore opportunities to switch to lower-rate products. Such movement typically intensifies during periods of policy easing and can influence lender strategies as they work to retain existing customers. The scale of refinancing will depend on how individual lenders approach rate revisions and how aggressively they compete for home loan market share.

Crypto markets endured a sharp shake-out as leveraged positions worth roughly $800 million were liquidated within a single 24-hour span, wiping out a wave of long bets across major digital assets.

The dump was triggered when Bitcoin slipped below a key price threshold, pressuring highly leveraged long positions on futures markets and prompting a cascade of forced sell-offs. Platforms such as Hyperliquid and Bybit reportedly absorbed the majority of the liquidations, underscoring how overextended trader leverage remains widespread even after prior volatility.

Data compiled by derivatives-monitoring firms shows hundreds of thousands of traders saw their positions wiped out, reflecting a broad-based unwind rather than a handful of large outliers. Long positions accounted for the lion’s share of the losses, a pattern that analysts argue deepens near-term downside risk while simultaneously resetting excessive leverage.

Market participants suggest the liquidation sequence was worsened by macroeconomic uncertainty. Signals from major central banks hinting at tighter monetary policy have quelled risk appetite, undermining speculative crypto bets built on hopes of renewed easy capital. A stronger dollar and rising bond yields weighed on crypto sentiment and intensified pressure on leveraged positions.

Declines weren’t limited to Bitcoin. Ethereum and other large-cap altcoins also suffered sharp drawdowns as falling prices triggered liquidation cascades across the derivatives market. As leverage unwinding rippled through the system, traders who had bet on a sustained rebound found themselves among the hardest hit.

Some investors framed this purge of leverage as a potential reset for the crypto market. Clearing out excessive long exposure might pave the way for more stable price action if broader buying support returns. Others, however, cautioned that forced liquidations could destabilise confidence and deepen volatility — especially if macro headwinds persist.

A substantial volume of cryptocurrency derivatives — exceeding $15.4 billion in notional value of Bitcoin and Ethereum options — are due to expire today, marking one of the largest monthly expiries of the year. This event may influence market dynamics as traders on major platforms close or roll over positions, potentially triggering volatility in spot prices.

Options from the leading derivatives exchange Deribit are included in today’s expiry, with roughly $13.4 billion in Bitcoin-denominated contracts and an additional $1.7 billion in Ethereum options scheduled to contract. The put/call ratio for BTC sits at approximately 0.58, signalling that calls outnumber puts — a structure often interpreted as mildly bullish when prevailing price levels are below key strike thresholds. For Ethereum, the put/call ratio is at 0.50, indicating an even balance between put and call positioning.

Max pain points — the strike prices at which the greatest number of options expire worthless — are calculated at about $100,000 for Bitcoin and near $3,400 for Ethereum. Both levels lie above the current trading prices, suggesting that many options might expire out-of-the-money unless the underlying assets rally.

Market observers note that this expiry arrives after a turbulent period of price slides. Bitcoin has shed more than 20 percent over the month, reflecting pressure from liquidity outflows, shrinking stable-coin pools, and forced deleveraging across derivatives platforms. Ethereum has struggled to regain momentum, and broader crypto sentiment has been cautious.

Some analysts say the large open-interest unwind could act as a cleansing event, reducing overhang and setting the stage for potential accumulation. Others caution that if a large number of holders close call positions without rolling them over, downward pressure on spot markets could deepen — particularly if liquidity remains muted around the expiry window.

Derivative-market data indicates that open interest has contracted sharply in the days leading up to expiry, signalling a wave of liquidations. That said, clustering of residual open interest at strike ranges between $80,000 and $100,000 for Bitcoin suggests that some investors are hedging or anticipating a rebound, possibly anchoring expectations for volatility post-expiry.

JPMorgan Chase & Co has upgraded its recommendation on China’s stock market to “overweight,” arguing that potential gains in the coming year now outweigh the risks of sharp losses. Strategists at the firm, including Rajiv Batra, explained that China’s market has already surrendered much of its outperformance this year, creating what they describe as an attractive entry point. They highlighted a combination of factors poised to support equities — widespread adoption of artificial intelligence, renewed consumption measures, and expectations of governance reforms. The performance setback appears to have reset valuations and left positioning relatively light, paving the way for what JPMorgan analysts see as potentially strong upside ahead.

The shift follows a quarter in which the MSCI China Index dropped around 6.2 percent even as broader regional indices in Asia-Pacific posted modest gains. JPMorgan noted that the Chinese equity market remains in the early stages of recovering from a downcycle that began in late 2020. With valuations now seen as acceptable and investor sentiment subdued, the bank anticipates room for rally once supportive catalysts take hold.

Analysts argue that companies tied to technology and AI stand to benefit most from upcoming tailwinds. Firms previously weighed under regulatory and macroeconomic uncertainty may now attract renewed investor interest, especially where corporate governance improvements and capital discipline have strengthened balance sheets. Entities with exposure to domestic consumption, industrial automation, electric vehicles, and energy storage are viewed as especially well positioned.

Some investors remain cautious, citing lingering macroeconomic headwinds, weak property prices, deflationary pressures and subdued consumer sentiment that have dampened retail participation in equity markets. But for long-term investors with a willingness to absorb volatility, JPMorgan’s call marks a turning point: the market’s immediate downside appears limited while its upside — if China’s growth impulses and structural reforms materialise — could be substantial.

JPMorgan also sees potential gains for Asian equities more broadly. With China, Hong Kong, South Korea and India judged as overweight, and Taiwan as neutral, the bank expects the MSCI Asia ex-Japan Index could rise roughly 15 percent from current levels if global liquidity remains supportive. Regional equities, they argue, may benefit from a reorientation of capital flows away from developed markets towards Asia’s current valuations.

At the same time, the bank’s optimism contrasts with more cautious forecasts from some rivals, which warn earnings uncertainty and high valuations could trigger consolidation rather than a sustained rally. That divergence underscores the highly bifurcated nature of the market: selective positioning may offer rewards, but indiscriminate exposure could remain risky.

Luxury housing continues to dominate the residential real estate market across India’s major cities, with luxury and ultra-luxury segments driving a marked rise in overall transaction value even as unit sales taper. Data from a leading national consultancy shows that although the number of homes sold in the top seven cities dropped by 9 percent year-on-year in Q3 2025, the total value of transactions surged 14 percent. That divergence underscores how costlier, higher-end homes are reshaping demand dynamics.

Results from the period reveal average residential prices across these cities climbed by 9 percent to roughly ₹9,105 per square foot, compared with ₹8,390 per square foot a year earlier. Among the seven-city group, the region surrounding the national capital registered the steepest price rise at 24 percent, followed by the technology hub city which posted a 10 percent increase.

The shift towards premium properties appears structural rather than cyclical. In the financial year 2025, approximately 4.22 lakh residences were sold across the top cities, with aggregate sales value reaching ₹5.59 lakh crore. Developers and analysts foresee FY26 sales value climbing to around ₹6.65 lakh crore, representing nearly a 20 percent increase over the previous year — even if volume growth remains constrained.

Market segmentation by price reveals where the momentum lies. Homes priced in the luxury and ultra-luxury bracket accounted for the largest share of new supply in Q2 2025 at 27 percent, signalling a deliberate tilt by developers toward high-end inventory. This contrasts sharply with affordable housing, which is witnessing comparatively modest demand and shrinking market share.

Affordability pressures and shifting buyer preferences explain part of this trend. Slower demand for lower-cost units has pushed developers to prioritise mid-income to luxury segments, where margins remain attractive and buyers appear increasingly willing — and able — to pay a premium for space, amenities and perceived investment value.

Regional markets display distinct characteristics. The national capital region stands out for highest price gains, reflecting sustained demand from corporate professionals drawn to well-located urban residences. The technology-driven city registers steady growth, supported by IT professionals and expatriate buyers seeking quality housing. The metropolitan coastal region remains the nation’s most expensive housing market, with baseline prices significantly above the national average — a reflection of limited land availability, redevelopment activity and interest from non-resident buyers.
