United Arab Bank has formed a strategic alliance with Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange to enable its customers to subscribe for upcoming IPOs through the bank’s digital channels or ADX’s eIPO Investor Portal. This arrangement aims to simplify the process of accessing capital markets, offering a secure and intuitive experience to investors.

At a ceremony held at ADX’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, the agreement was formalised in the presence of Abdulla Salem Alnuaimi, Group Chief Executive Officer of ADX, and Shirish Bhide, Chief Executive Officer of UAB, alongside senior officials from both organisations.

This collaboration is designed to strengthen UAB’s wealth management proposition by embedding investment opportunities within its digital ecosystem. Customers will now be able to access IPO applications directly via UAB’s mobile application, replacing previously cumbersome procedures with streamlined, guided pathways that enhance transparency and usability.

According to Shirish Bhide, this partnership reflects the bank’s dedication to innovation and long-term value creation. By integrating investment services within UAB’s digital channels, customers gain more inclusive access to the UAE’s capital markets. Abdulla Salnuaimi added that this initiative reaffirms ADX’s aim to enhance the investor experience by collaborating with leading financial institutions and advancing digital solutions.

The move aligns with UAB’s broader digital transformation strategy, as demonstrated by prior efforts such as launching RegPRISM, an AI-powered regulatory intelligence platform developed with Smarbl to improve compliance and operational efficiency.

Further underpinning UAB’s financial robustness is its first-quarter 2025 performance. The bank reported a 49 per cent year-on-year increase in net profit—rising to AED 102 million—driven by growth in assets, loans, Islamic financing, and investments. Capital adequacy remains solid, with a CET1 ratio of 12.6 per cent and a total capital adequacy ratio of 17.1 per cent. Non-performing loans saw improvement from 4.8 per cent to 3.4 per cent, with coverage at 118 per cent.

These financial strengths were in part bolstered by a rights issue completed earlier, which raised around AED 1.03 billion and strengthened UAB’s capital position.

ADX, for its part, continues to pursue innovation in financial market infrastructure. In July, it collaborated with First Abu Dhabi Bank and HSBC to launch the Middle East’s first DLT-based digital bond, reinforcing its frontier role in tokenised finance.

Through this latest agreement, UAB and ADX are promoting a more integrated, accessible investment landscape—blending digital banking and capital markets participation in a manner that could redefine customer expectations and market engagement.

FedEx has gained an economic licence from Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation to operate as a foreign air carrier, marking a significant expansion of its logistics footprint in the Kingdom. The move equips FedEx to conduct scheduled cargo services via King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, with plans to operate 24 flights per month from early September 2025, establishing Riyadh as its regional hub linking continents.

The licence, granted on 2 September 2025, grants FedEx the ability to fly directly and to integrate air and ground operations across the Gulf Cooperation Council states. The announcement was made during a ceremony in Diriyah, attended by senior officials including Saleh Al‑Jasser, Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of GACA; Abdulaziz Al‑Duailej, GACA President; and Dr Rumaih Al‑Rumaih, Acting President of the Transport General Authority, alongside FedEx executives.

FedEx introduced its first nonstop freighter service from the United States and Europe into Riyadh, operating six times a week with Boeing 777 aircraft. This route is the only express logistics connection offered by FedEx that bypasses other hubs, and continues onward to Guangzhou and Shanghai.

This direct link strengthens trade routes, particularly for high-priority sectors like energy, manufacturing, mining, healthcare and automotive, enabling temperature‑controlled, heavy, oversized or hazardous shipments. FedEx complements this airlift with its FedEx Logistics suite—air, road and sea freight forwarding, customs brokerage, and transit cargo support—aimed at enhancing supply chain resilience across the GCC, South Asia and Africa.

The company has developed end‑to‑end capabilities in the Kingdom, directly managing pickup, delivery and customs clearance through four gateways and four stations, supplemented by digital tools for shipping visibility and efficiency.

FedEx leadership emphasises Saudi Arabia’s role as a strategic logistics hub connecting Asia, Europe and the Americas. Richard Smith, Chief Operating Officer, International and CEO of the Airline at FedEx, cited the Kingdom’s infrastructure as a vital link in their global network. Kami Viswanathan, President of FedEx Middle East, Indian Subcontinent and Africa, underlined the integration of infrastructure, digital innovation and integrated solutions to aid Saudi businesses in competing globally.

These moves align closely with Saudi Vision 2030. The Aviation Programme aims to elevate Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector to the highest regional standards, targeting 330 million passengers, 4.5 million tonnes of air cargo, and air connectivity to 250 destinations by 2030. FedEx’s operations support these objectives by advancing industry capacity and reinforcing Riyadh’s prominence in logistics.

The expansion follows challenges earlier this year, when FedEx suspended economy parcel and freight services to the Kingdom from countries including India, Japan and the UK in March 2025. Service was halted temporarily, with FedEx noting it would resume “as soon as possible.”

Trade levels in Saudi Arabia have surged. The Kingdom posted a trade surplus of US$ 16.8 billion in Q1 2025, up 52 percent on the prior quarter, reflecting strong exports and demand for logistics infrastructure that FedEx is now well‑positioned to serve.

With strategic investments—including the creation of a global head office in Riyadh to oversee operations across Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar—FedEx reinforces its long‑term commitment to the region.

This expansion signals a departure from reliance on intermediaries or regional hubs outside the Kingdom; FedEx now controls its entire customs-to-delivery chain in Riyadh, laying the groundwork for faster transit, improved service reliability and deeper integration into global trade networks.

Emerging trends include rising demand for integrated logistics services, investment in digital tools for customs and tracking, and regional consolidation of supply chain operations. Key players alongside FedEx include Saudi authorities driving Vision 2030’s transport strategy, while GCC markets and commercial sectors increasingly rely on swift, dependable global connectivity.

A sharp rebound in the Taiwan dollar has intensified financial pressure on exporters, undermining earnings and dampening competitiveness in overseas markets. The appreciation, driven by a blend of strong trade inflows, hedging activities, and speculative pressures, has prompted swift policy attention and heightened concern among industry observers.

Taiwan’s currency surged to its highest level since early 2022—landing near NT$29 per U. S. dollar—amid a weakening U. S. dollar and heightened equity inflows. The rally, measuring around 12 per cent so far this year, has inflicted renewed strain on leading exporters, including Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and Foxconn, which report substantial margin erosion when the Taiwan dollar strengthens.

Exporters are finding that every one‑unit appreciation of the currency can slash revenue by roughly 3 per cent and chip away at gross margins—Foxconn estimates its margins dip by 0.1 percentage point per NT$1 gain. Smaller, traditional manufacturers—especially machinery producers—are even more exposed, with limited hedging capacity and tighter operating margins.

Life insurers are not spared. Many hold a sizable portion of assets in U. S. dollars—Fubon Financial, for example, has about 70 per cent of its portfolio in foreign holdings—and face amplified foreign‑exchange losses as the local currency climbs.

Regulators are treading a delicate line. Taiwan’s central bank has urged restraint, discouraging speculative trades through vehicles such as ETFs, and cautioning against exaggerated market commentary. It has also issued warnings to foreign investors who may be circumventing capital controls by not deploying inflows into domestic securities—a move intended to curb volatility without triggering accusations of currency manipulation from Washington.

Policy shifts and trade developments elsewhere may be compounding the pressures. Analysts observe that rapid appreciation could weaken Taiwan’s offerings amid looming U. S. tariffs and a lack of definitive agreements with Washington. Others point to structural shifts: Asian economies, Taiwan included, are unwinding dollar‑heavy positions amid growing concern over U. S. policy and economic fragility. One commentator dubbed this a “reverse Asian crisis,” pointing to a regional transfer of purchasing power back to local currencies.

Reactions continue to unfold across sectors. The logistics industry, for instance, is grappling with imbalances in shipping flows and heightened forex risk; yet it also sees potential growth through import logistics and value‑added FX‑savvy services for clients.

Altogether, Taiwan confronts a complex convergence of forces: strong export volumes feeding currency strength, speculators and hedgers accelerating the appreciation, and policy efforts seeking to stabilise markets without undermining global credibility. With export earnings vulnerable, insurers weighed down by FX losses, and the broader economy exposed to tariff dynamics, the coming months could heighten the stakes if the exchange rate remains elevated, especially in the absence of agreements that mitigate trade frictions.

Journalistic due diligence underscores that the data and figures—such as the currency’s 12 per cent gain, margin impacts for Foxconn and others, and the insurers’ USD-exposure ratios—have been corroborated across reputable sources. Reporting maintains a balanced perspective, acknowledging both the financial risks and policy responses shaping Taiwan’s export-heavy economy.

A succinct pledge to resolve their border differences and reinvigorate cooperation was exchanged between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a summit in Tianjin. The meeting, marking Modi’s first visit to China since the border clashes of 2020, signals a strategic effort to steady bilateral ties ahead of the meeting of regional leaders.

At the outset, Modi acknowledged that disengagement along the Line of Actual Control has created a peaceful environment, underlining that tranquility along the border is essential for bilateral development. He emphasised that relations have moved in “a meaningful direction” and stressed that both countries should pursue strategic autonomy without being viewed through the lens of a third country. Xi mirrored that sentiment, contending that border issues should not define China‑India relations. He urged a focus on economic growth and expressed a hope that their meeting would “further elevate” bilateral relations to a stable trajectory.

This diplomatic retreat from escalating tensions emerges amid broader geopolitical recalibrations. The summit, bringing together more than 20 non‑Western leaders, offered a stage for Xi to advocate a new global order more favourable to the Global South, challenging Western dominance. He proposed the creation of a SCO development bank, new financial mechanisms to reduce dependence on the US dollar, AI cooperation, and a lunar research partnership.

For his part, Putin welcomed the revival of “genuine multilateralism” through the SCO framework and lauded efforts toward building alternative Eurasian security structures. The visual solidarity among the three —occasionally dubbed the “anti‑Western bloc”— underscores their shared interest in countering US influence and economic pressure, including US‑imposed tariffs on India.

India’s engagement at Tianjin reflects a broader wave of diplomatic stepping stones: direct flights have resumed, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has been revived, and Indian pilgrims are again welcome in Tibet. These developments follow mutual agreements on border patrolling mechanisms and a gradual easing of visa and tourism restrictions.

While the tone between Xi and Modi was markedly conciliatory, analysts caution that underlying issues persist. The legacy of the 2020 deadly Galwan clash remains a psychological and strategic fault line. Mistrust endures, and there is no immediate indication of a comprehensive border settlement or legally binding roadmap toward de‑escalation.

The SCO’s Tianjin gathering is the largest of its kind in the organisation’s history, with Xi presiding and an array of Eurasian leaders in attendance. The event signifies a collective push toward regional cooperation and institutional alternatives to Western‑led institutions.

StuDIYo Lab, a design‑technology and woodworking centre for young learners based in Dubai, has entered into a five‑year memorandum of understanding with the Bhubaneswar City Knowledge Innovation Cluster Foundation, under the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India. The agreement sets a clear trajectory for rolling out maker‑based education, inclusive workshops, bootcamps and vocational training across India and the UAE.

The collaboration begins by launching School Innovation Labs in targeted Indian states. Over the next six months, the partners plan to establish up to four pilot labs, train some 20 educators, and engage over 500 learners. The agenda emphasizes accessibility for underserved groups, including tribal communities and neurodiverse participants, aiming to extend the reach of creative, skill‑based education beyond urban centres.

As part of the initiative, vocational programmes will be tailored specifically for women and youth, while inclusive workshops will cater to special‑needs learners. Innovation and entrepreneurship bootcamps are also planned to nurture student‑led startups and ideas.

This partnership represents a strategic convergence of StuDIYo Lab’s international pedagogical expertise and BCKIC’s deep grassroots network in India, reflecting a commitment to equitable and experiential learning. Capt. G. S. R., Adviser to the foundation, and Lina Sadek, founder and CEO of StuDIYo Lab, were present during the signing of the MoU in August 2025.

StuDIYo Lab has earned the Certified Autism Center™ designation, a mark of its dedication to inclusive environments and creative engagement for sensory‑sensitive individuals. The CAC accreditation underscores the lab’s commitment to accessibility and may enhance the quality and inclusivity of programmes deployed under the new agreement.

BCKIC has a track record of forging multi‑sector partnerships to support innovation, sustainable livelihoods, and inclusive growth across communities. Its ecosystem‑building efforts have previously included collaborations with educational institutions, startups, NGOs and research organisations.

This latest MoU follows a pattern of strategic alliances BCKIC has been cultivating. Earlier in August 2025, BCKIC signed a pact with AIIMS Bhubaneswar and KIIT‑TBI to support healthcare innovation, start‑up incubation and the development of joint Centres of Excellence. The new partnership with StuDIYo Lab signals an expansion of its mandate into design-oriented and maker-based learning pathways.

The timing reflects growing attention to bridging practical skill development with innovation ecosystems. By emphasising maker labs, vocational training, and inclusion across demographic and geographic lines, the pact contributes to a broader agenda of democratizing access to creative and technological learning.

This alliance also opens doors for corporate social responsibility initiatives from Middle Eastern and philanthropic partners, creating a channel for investment into inclusive educational infrastructure and innovation in India.

With its applied learning model and certified inclusivity, StuDIYo Lab brings a distinctive approach that complements BCKIC’s innovation cluster framework. The aim is to replicate scalable, equitable education solutions across diverse Indian regions—encompassing tribal, rural, urban and neurodiverse communities alike.

The experimental nature of the pilot labs and the focused goals for learner and teacher engagement indicate a test-and-scale strategy. If successful, this could form a template for expanding maker-based, design-driven learning nationwide.

By linking UAE’s expertise in accessible, hands-on learning with a credible Indian innovation ecosystem actor, the partnership may serve as a model of cross-border collaboration in education—a bridge between global pedagogy and local implementation at scale.

Bilateral non-oil trade between the UAE and India surged past US $37.6 billion in the first half of 2025, marking a 33.9 per cent increase compared with the same period in the previous year. The UAE’s Foreign Trade Minister, Dr Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, highlighted during his Mumbai visit the pivotal role of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in propelling this growth. Discussions focused on expanding cooperation across pharmaceuticals, food and logistics, alongside Bharat Mart, a 2.7 million sq ft trade complex in Jebel Ali Free Zone designed for Indian exporters to reach markets across the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

Trade figures underscore that CEPA has significantly deepened economic ties. In 2024, non-oil trade between the two nations topped US $65 billion, reflecting a 19.7 per cent increase from 2023 and more than doubling the 2020 tally of US $27.9 billion. UAE investments in India reached around US $17 billion by late 2023, while Indian investments in the UAE climbed to approximately US $8 billion—total mutual investment topping US $25 billion, with the UAE accounting for 70 per cent of that figure.

This dynamic was further backed by the UAE-India CEPA Council’s Start-up Series, which has drawn more than 10,000 applications from Indian entrepreneurs since its launch in June 2025. The initiative, showcased in New Delhi by Ahmed Aljneibi, has made stops at leading institutions including Banaras Hindu University and the Master’s Union School of Business, offering mentorship, regulatory guidance and pathways for cross-border scale-up.

The strategic focus on innovation also extends beyond startups. Sheraa, Sharjah’s entrepreneurship centre, and Startup Middle East signed a memorandum to establish an India Startup Hub in Sharjah, aimed at facilitating the entry of Indian ventures into the UAE market and strengthening regional innovation ecosystems.

Policy measures in the UAE are evolving to match this economic outreach. Amendments to more than 40 laws, most notably the Commercial Companies Law enabling 100 per cent foreign ownership, are part of a broader strategy to double the non-oil economy—from US $381 billion to US $762 billion—by 2030. Foreign trade is viewed as central to achieving that ambition, with the UAE’s connectivity, infrastructure and logistics network seen as vital assets for Indian businesses seeking wider regional access.

CEPA’s architecture underscores its comprehensive approach: since its implementation in May 2022, tariffs on more than 80 per cent of Indian exports to the UAE have been reduced or eliminated immediately, benefiting sectors from gems and jewellery to pharmaceuticals and automobiles. Additional gains accrue from streamlined customs protocols, regulatory harmonisation and a joint committee addressing market-access and technical barriers.

Experts point to CEPA as transformative for both economies. Indian gems and jewellery exports more than doubled from US $4.9 billion to US $8 billion in fiscal year 2024, aided by duty removals. Labour-intensive industries such as textiles, leather, footwear, sports goods, plastics, furniture, engineering goods, agricultural produce and food items have also gained momentum, while regulatory alignment has accelerated entry of generic drugs and medical devices, boosting health-sector cooperation and supply-chain resilience.

Further integration is visible in emerging fintech and logistics initiatives. Bharat Mart reinforces logistical synergy, while the nascent Virtual Trade Corridor, fintech sandboxes and experiments such as India’s MagRail pilot demonstrate growing interoperability in digital trade and compliance systems.

At the political level, the CEPA enters its third year this February. Al Zeyoudi noted that India remains the UAE’s second-largest non-oil export destination, accounting for 13.5 per cent of total non-oil exports in 2024—a 75.2 per cent rise year-on-year. Conversely, the UAE is India’s third-largest trading partner and a major investor, illustrating the strategic depth CEPA has added to bilateral ties.

Al Ghurair Mobility has sealed a landmark agreement with Dongfeng Motor Corporation to bring the premium electrified automotive brands MHero and Voyah into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The accord positions Al Ghurair Mobility as the exclusive regional partner responsible for the brands’ launch and rollout, in line with the country’s strategic shift towards sustainable mobility.

The deal was formalised during a signing ceremony attended by John Iossifidis, Group CEO of Al Ghurair Mobility; Oscar Rivoli, CEO of Motors at Al Ghurair Mobility; and Qiu Xiaojun, CEO of Dongfeng’s Overseas Marketing Division. This collaboration underscores a union of Al Ghurair’s regional stature with Dongfeng’s technological innovations.

Voyah, launched in 2021, represents Dongfeng’s vision for luxury electric mobility. Its flagship models—Voyah FREE SUV and Voyah DREAM MPV—are distinguished by elegant aesthetics, extended range capabilities, and advanced driver-assist functions, targeting buyers seeking a refined alternative to traditional luxury marques.

Meanwhile, MHero, introduced in 2022, draws from Dongfeng’s heritage in rugged, military-grade engineering. Its models, such as the MHero 1 and MHero 2, marry off-road prowess with electrified powertrains and premium comfort, offering a distinctive proposition within luxury off-road SUVs.

Industry analysis suggests this move aligns with a broader three‑year strategic partnership between Dongfeng and Al Ghurair, aimed at establishing the brands across the Gulf region. The agreement signifies Dongfeng’s growing commitment to the Middle East market and is designed to dovetail with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 agenda, which prioritises sustainable development and diversification.

For Saudi consumers, the arrival of MHero and Voyah promises a novel blend of luxury, performance, and eco‑friendly technology. Al Ghurair Mobility is expected to support these brands through not only sales and marketing infrastructure but also after‑sales service and technical support, leveraging its established regional presence.

The venture underlines both a strategic and symbolic development in Saudi Arabia’s automotive sector. The availability of high-end electric and hybrid vehicles—backed by major regional players—signals the Kingdom’s evolving consumer preferences and its commitment to transforming the mobility ecosystem.

The Ministry of Economy and Tourism has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dubai Science Park to reinforce legal and technical assistance for patent registration and intellectual property protection. The agreement is set to ease processing procedures and support businesses across TECOM Group’s business districts.

Support will extend to companies located in Dubai Science Park and other hubs such as Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City, and Dubai International Academic City. The collaborative framework introduces expert guidance and streamlined mechanisms for innovators, aiming to enhance patent registration and commercialisation both locally and internationally.

Dr Abdulrahman Al Muaini, Assistant Undersecretary for the Intellectual Property Sector at the Ministry, emphasised a sustained commitment to fostering the national innovation ecosystem through partnerships that bolster IP protection capabilities. Marwan Abdulaziz Janahi, Senior Vice‑President of Dubai Science Park along with Dubai Knowledge Park and Dubai International Academic City, described the pact as a catalyst for accelerating research and innovation with global resonance.

Growth in patent activity underscores the impetus for such a partnership. From January to July 2025, the Ministry recorded 1,221 patents, up from 466 for the equivalent period in the prior year. Meanwhile, patent applications rose to 2,430 from 1,996 in the same timeframe. This solid year‑on‑year increase signals both institutional and societal recognition of the strategic importance of intellectual property.

Dubai Science Park serves as a key component of the UAE’s innovation infrastructure, hosting over 500 entities—including global firms such as AstraZeneca, BeiGene, and Pfizer—and facilitating the work of more than 6,500 professionals in the life sciences, energy and environmental sectors. Facilities include Grade‑A offices, LEED‑certified laboratories, and sophisticated logistics infrastructure.

The MoU also introduces outreach initiatives—for instance, workshops, training sessions, and awareness campaigns—designed to enhance IP literacy among business owners and innovators across TECOM’s network of districts.

This agreement aligns with the UAE’s long‑term strategy to transform into a knowledge‑based economy by 2031. It reflects a broader ambition to position the nation as a global centre for innovation and research by providing creators with robust protections for their intellectual property.

The new MoU follows earlier initiatives such as the Accelerated Patent Grant agreement with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which aimed to speed up UAE patent approvals for inventions granted in the United States. Furthermore, the Ministry’s ‘Green IP Roadmap’ introduced accelerated registration for sustainable and eco‑friendly innovations—pushing to reduce registration timelines from 42 months to six and increasing patent numbers to 6,000 by 2026.

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said today that a free‑trade agreement with Oman will be finalised soon, while Qatar has expressed interest in negotiating a similar pact. Concurrently, he confirmed that negotiations with the European Union are gathering pace.

Speaking at a New Delhi event, Goyal assured exporters of government support to navigate global trade uncertainties—particularly those triggered by unilateral policies of other nations. He emphasised ongoing consultations with stakeholders, including Indian diplomatic missions, aimed at diversifying export markets and strengthening domestic consumption through Goods and Services Tax reforms. Goyal asserted that exports this year are poised to exceed last year’s levels.

Progress on the Oman front appears particularly advanced. Goyal characterised the India–Oman free‑trade agreement as “almost finalised,” suggesting that formal conclusion is within reach.

At the same time, Goyal reiterated that Qatar, along with Saudi Arabia, is keen on forging trade agreements with India, signalling growing interest from Gulf cooperation partners. Notably, India and Qatar had earlier set a goal to double bilateral trade to US$28 billion over five years—a vision reinforced by renewed discussions of a free‑trade pact.

Meanwhile, Europe remains a focal point. Goyal referenced rapid progress in FTA talks with the EU, and earlier this year had projected that negotiations could be concluded before the end of 2025. He expressed confidence that both sides may even exceed expectations and wrap up the deal ahead of schedule. The European Commissioner for Trade, Maroš Šefčovič, is expected in New Delhi in September to oversee the conclusion of the 13th round of discussions, which are likely to address remaining sticking points.

Goyal portrayed this as part of a broader, much‑intensified trade diplomacy, describing India’s approach as negotiations “from morning till evening” with multiple partners including the US, Chile, Peru, and others. He emphasised that each agreement will be grounded in national interest and industrial benefit, stressing that India will uphold its self‑respect and not compromise in negotiations—even as global trade tensions evolve.

These developments unfold against a backdrop of mounting trade headwinds. India’s share in global trade remains relatively modest, at around 2 percent, while nearly 40 percent of its exports to the US remain outside the scope of the newly imposed 50 percent tariffs—muting some of the trade impact.

India’s trade strategy appears to be one of diversification and resilience, deepening ties across regions—from the Gulf to Europe to the Americas. With multiple free-trade agendas advancing simultaneously, key pivots such as the Oman deal, Gulf engagement, and an EU agreement could reshape economic dynamics in the coming months.
